Travel books gush about the boom in distilling and brewing in Tasmania. I had to try some whisky during a brief stop in Hobart. Without any prior planning, I stumbled into Lark Distillery. The location of the distillery makes it ideal for stumbling into-- it's right by the water surrounded by various tourist hot spots. I ordered the whisky flight and was promptly served 3 small pours. I remember the price feeling a bit high but generally reasonable. What really struck me was the lack of introduction or explanation about what I was about to drink. I had to ask for a bit of information at which point I was told the history of Bill Lark and the uniqueness of each pour. Let it be known that I am not traditionally a whiskey drinker (unless it's been beaten with an egg white and lemon or served in a shot glass) however I knew, on this particular trip to Hobart, that today was the day. Lark Distillery is home to Lark Whiskeys - a Tasmanian born and bred, very fancy and very delicious whiskey. But what this venue is better known for is it's whisky tasting tray. For 20 clams you can try three of their best whiskeys and get a whiskey educational all-the-while sitting in a delightfully cosy space. For some extra dollars, you should most definitely get yourself a cheese platter to go with. It features locally made cheeses and quince with freshly baked bread. I promise you, Whiskey Tasting + Cheese Platter = match made in heaven. You CAN do a tour of the distillery and get a more serious educational, which will take up a few hours of your day, but really, all you need to do is get a chair at the bar and chat to the incredibly knowledgeable staff. read more

Very easy way to learn more about local whiskey offerings (not just Lark). We came here early morning when it just opened and had a good chat to the bar man while he was setting up. Gave us a great education on both local and international offerings. They have a great range of whiskeys in the service area for purchase. What a great place. Dropped in at the end of a day of exploring, eating and drinking in Hobart. With just 15 minutes to go, the staff advised against a full flight of four whiskeys - and suggested two halves. Fantastic service, and I learnt a lot about local whiskey in my short time there. Great way to 'ease springs' into the evening. Beautiful setting. I will definitely be back to try their 'breakfast' whiskey before midday. read more

Huge whiskey collection with outdoor seating by the waterfront? Yes, please. If you want a place that'll give you a huge selection of local whiskeys at reasonable prices with friendly bartenders, come here and you won't be disappointed. We tried the premium Tasmanian flight and really liked the Hellyer's port cask. Hellyer's tends to be fruitier, with a passionfruit undertone, presumably due to using beer barley instead of scotch liquor barley (which had more sugar, but less flavor when fermented), and a unique yeast (I'm not a distiller and this may all be wrong). In any event, Hellyer's was a winner for Tassie whisky in my mind try--to get any of them other than the peated, which is less interesting, but more available. We also tasted the last tiny pour of the master series port cask, which was on the house because it wasn't a full pour, and that was even more tasty. Lark's own whisky was actually sold out due to a boom in demand, but they are prepping some for market soon. read more

The utter disappointment I felt when I first visited the Lark on a holiday to Tasmania in 2011 has stuck with me, but only in that every time I go to Lark these days I have to giggle. Similar to my feelings about Nant, after spending a bit of time gazing at Lark's website prior to my trip I was expecting something lush and dark. Instead my friend and I walked in on a Friday night to a rollicking live country band, plastic-covered tables with stackable plastic chairs, and a very local feel. If you go in expecting what I've just described then Lark is bloody good stuff, and let's be real--the whisky should be the important thing here, and Lark's whisky is GOOD. This is a beautiful distillery. The cellar door and bar area is constructed well. It's inviting, homely and you can see their entire range from the second you walk in. We did a tasting and for $20 each, I think it was reasonable. The two single malts and a liqueur were comparable but had stark enough differences to promote conversation about flavor pallets and favorites. read more

For lovers of whisky and booze, Lark Distilleryis a great way to spend an houhr ort wo in the heart of Hobart. $10 will get you 4 tastes of anything - there's (obviously) plenty of whisky to try, but also a gin, apple brandy, rum and an Australian bush liquor. We spent a pleasant hour or so with Becks who took us through the entire range (what can I say, my friend and I love booze and couldn't stop at just 4 tastes!). She was lots of fun and knowledgeable, but not in that wanky "oh I know everything and you're stupid" way that you sometimes come across at cellar doors. If you can't fit an entire bottle in your bag back home, just get a mini 60ml bottle that will see you straight for at least a drink or two when you're back home and want to re-live you Hobart adventure. read more

Such a casual atmosphere where you sit back and relax and listen to a live band during the weekend, or just hang at the bar tasting a variety of their massive selection of whiskey. If you are in need of a small meal Lark has that as well. Service is great and the bartenders are more than willing to help you pick what's to your liking. We took the Lark Distillery 1 day tour - where they take you from their bar in town to their Distillery, to local parts of town including the town of Richmond and then to a winery for lunch and back to the Distillery multiple times to see how whisky is made. A great tour, with lots of education, fun, drinking, and eating all the way through. Afterwards, we hung out at the bar drinking and watching the Blue Grass band playing at night. With an hour is so to pass I was on my way to the maritime museum but the weather was turning a bit and the wind picking up and temperature getting chilly I looked around for somewhere warm and there it was right in front of me, a whiskey bar. Warm in temperature and welcome by the staff who greeted me at the bar. With a top shelf range of whiskies that extends to all the other shelves if you are looking for something in particular there is a good chance you will find it here. Tastings are available with the staff more then happy for you to go through the samples at your own pace and happy to answer any questions you have as they talk you through the whisky making process and how each one on offer differs from the next. For a few dollars more you can also sample some spirits too. Opposite the bar along the wall are the whiskies available for sale. If you like a whisky and want a place to warm up on a cold Hobart day this place is for you. read more

Lovely spot for a relaxing drink. We were there in the early afternoon, drinking whiskey and ale while looking out over the wharf. There's a great range of spirits and some boutique beer, the Lark spirits at least are very good value and the service was quick and easy. read more

WHISKY + CHEESE. That's all you need in your life once you step into this cosy spot. We popped by on a weekend night and it was actually pretty quiet, but there were the cutest old man folk bands playing, and a few people even got up and had a dance which was great. These guys are award winners. You've got to drop by if you're in town. read more

We have visited here a couple of times on Tassie trips. Most recently we tried a whiskey tasting flight. We sat out the back in the sun overlooking the water. The building behind Lark has some awesome wall art. The whiskey here was nice, I'm not much of a whiskey drinker so couldn't really rate it against others. I do like whiskey liqueur though - and I must say I prefer the commercial ones that I've tried over this one. Not that it was bad! Definitely worth a look if you're in Hobart! read more

What a fun place to visit! We did a tasting that was supposed to cost $15 per person. But after we found one of the whiskeys to be irresistible and bought a small bottle of it to take with us, the tasting fee was waived. We didn't have any food but from what I could see the food selection was limited. read more

The Lark Distillery is a local whiskey distillery that also operates as a cosy pub. 'The Lark' is family run by some very friendly locals who have a real passion for what they do. Even better -they are really good at it with Lark whiskeys winning a number of awards (even in Scotland!). If you don't drink whiskey, don't panic; they have a range of quality beers, wines and other basic spirits like gin. You can sit inside or (if they weather is ok) out the back by the grass. They also have live music regularly (mostly jazz or folk) and on a Friday Night you have access to the 'Quartermasters Grill' which tends to serve fantastic low-key food like chorizo burgers etc. read more

For locals and visitors alike, if you enjoy a wee dram occasionally you're bound to enjoy this little bar! As a musician, I've played here more than I've just gone for a drink but even so, it's fun. This place isn't cheap but I think it's worth it for something special. The bar staff are excellent and service is top notch here. They do serve real coffee and locally made liqueur chocolates which is great if you have to drive but I'd suggest walking or catching a cab. They stock a wide selection of boutique beers but I recommend going straight for the Lark Bush Liqueur made with Tasmanian Mountain Pepper (Tasmania lanceolata for any plant nuts out there). Alone or over a little ice, it's a piece of Tasmania you won't forget in a hurry! If you don't live in Hobart don't despair, they have an online shop. read more

Lark whisky is a must try if you're into the distilled stuff! A famous TAS/AU brand and they make delicious whisky. Just waiting on a cheese plate so can't judge he food (limited selection) but I can say the Forty Spotted Gin & Tonic is brilliant too. 4.5 stars, the Bloody Mary ordered in our party was generic and average. read more

Took my whiskey loving pals from LA to check out Lark a few weeks ago. I was super impressed with the variety of drinks offered and the extensive whiskey selection. Great Whiskey bar with knowledgeable staff. Excellent atmosphere both inside and out. Huge selection of Australian Whiskey plus scotch and other international whiskey. Also wine available and many cocktails. Didn't have any of their food so can't comment on that. read more
