This is older style grocery store locally owned and apparently has an amazing beer fridge (son that is college aged). But what I have been wanting to try is their breakfast and lunch bar. I couldn't find the hours for the bar printed anywhere (6a-9:30a). I just assumed breakfast would be until ten. So made it at 9:35. Most of it had been taken away, but asked if I could still be served with what was left. Lots of looking left and right trying to decide. Finally said yes if I was ok with what was out. I had scrambled eggs bacon and a biscuit. It was very good. Not saying it would be as good as an atlanta breakfast place like Callie's hot little biscuit. But it was good and $2.45. Lunch (10:30 or 11a until they run out which apparently is between 2-3p). I had Lima beans black eyed peas and rice with a yeast roll (or cornbread or spicy cornbread). $5. It was good. Hot and hit the spot. Not amazing. But good. I would go back. I expected the staff to be nicer and friendly since they are locally owned and operated. However, the staff at the bar tend to be surly, while the check out staff are always friendly. Not sure if they hate their jobs and owners or just always having a bad day when I go. read more

Cash Saver is a old school deep south grocery store. The prices and selections is great but what the real gem about the store is the deli. In the back is a old school grocery store deli with homemade and fresh offerings. I love their fried chicken. If you want a home cooked meal for a great price then make your way to Cash Saver and go back to the deli. You wont be disappointed. read more

How can this place not have gotten reviews? And on top of that not get rave reviews. Ok, so I'm not really reviewing the grocery party of Big Star. As a grocery store it's ok. Basic selection and a bit run down, but it's an older store so what do you do. It is locally owned so that gives it points right there. There is something nice about being able to say you actually know and see the owner. My review is the deli/plate lunch found in the back of Big Star. I've been out of Oxford for 8 years now and STILL crave their food every single Sunday. If you went to Ole Miss it's a tradition. If not, then it sounds strange. If you walk into the grocery store head straight back to your right and you will be hit will a LONG cafeteria style lunch counter. They do meat and two plates that comes with a roll or cornbread. You use to be able to get half portions but for some reason they stopped that. They have staples like stuffed bellpeppers and spaghetti but then they rotate the menu daily with Chicken and Dress or Dumplings or other great dishes. There is a HUGE selection of sides from corn on the cob to broccoli casserole to mashed potatoes and my favorite fried okra. Typically I get chicken and dressing or spaghetti with mashed potatoes and fried okra. I always choose one of their big, buttery, soft rolls, but their cornbread is great too. I've even been known to pretend I was getting food for another person so I could get a 4 veggie plate as well. Hey don't judge. I ate it in two days. I just wanted a bite of everything. We would typically hit up Big Star right before the church crowd so they couldn't judge or hungover disheveled look. Oh well, it was a great way to recoup after a winning football game or a winning party. If you are from Oxford and/or Ole Miss then that makes sense. There is also a huge selection of tea either sweet or unsweet, a salad bar, and a small seating area. I don't know why these kinds of places aren't everywhere and I have searched high and low since I've left Oxford. There is just something great about getting a big styrofoam plate of food, going to avent park, and enjoying a lazy Mississippi Sunday! read more

This is the best place to buy groceries in Oxford. Most of their food is cheap, and cheaper still with the cost plus 10%. The meat department is also great, all the ground beef and chops are high quality. All the employees are nice. However, I have one critique. Some of the deli works need an attitude adjustment, esp if you request sliced cheese or ham. read more

All of the reviews that you have read are true to our finding. The store is clean, well stocked, and the cashiers are helpful and nice. We found the store to be well priced and stocked. I've mentioned stalked a couple times in this review and that's because living in Oxford MS people know that once the school opens, the University, the students are like ravenous locust and buy everything off the shelves, leaving little for the local people. Also, my husband and I have found that this is the only store in Oxford that carries any decent west coast style beer. We are Californians living in the south and the one thing we can say that we miss is the breweries and all the selections of beers that California has to offer. We knew our stay here would not be long if we couldn't find some decent tasting beer. Larson saved us,, they have a nice selection of California beers for a very reasonable price. It's another reason why we shop here. And one day we are going to try the food that they have in the deli section. read more

This is the cheapest place in Oxford to buy groceries. The produce is always fresh and the store well stocked. I can count on one hand the times in 30 years they've been out of something I wanted. Now called Cash Saver, just add 10 % to whatever the price is. The butcher/meat department is the place to buy affordable steaks, chicken or whatever you need. This store has things stocked that you won't find in big city grocery stores. Things like cracklins, chitterlings, tripe, real lard, fatback, etc. Things that aren't for everybody, true, but this is the only store in Oxford that has them. The deli is famous for its plate lunches with its homemade rolls and cornbread. Spaghetti, pork chops, green beans, even breakfast biscuits with ham or bacon. Great stuff! Local people have used the bakery for years for special ordered Birthday Cakes with special themes available like TMNT, Spiderman, Hello Kitty....you get the idea. If you'll watch the circulars, you'll find that even with the silly 10% add on, they consistently beat Kroger and often times even Wally World in prices. In all fairness the 10% markup is supposedly 10 % above cost, and that 10% is all they are making. Personally, I wish they'd just price the things at what you are going to pay at the register to start with. read more
