Wine tasting in New Mexico?! Well, why the hell NOT?! This was such a different experience for me. While the wine didn't knock my socks off, what did was the amazing hospitality and atmosphere. Sombra Antigua is where you wanna go to have a fun time. No judgments here, just a relaxing good time. While visiting New Mexico, I decided to check out the wine tasting scene. Admittedly, my expectations for wineries outside of my home state of California are generally quite low. Not because I don't think that there is better wine out there, but simply because I don't want to quickly compare everything to what I already know. Coming here, I knew it wouldn't be anything like the wineries back home. But that's honestly what I enjoyed most about Sombra Antigua. I stopped by solo without a reservation, and literally left with newly made friends that I hung out with for the rest of the night and even the next day. I mean, the people are so friendly, welcoming, and trustworthy here. There was live music and I sat and watched. 15 minutes later I was actually up and DANCING with a group of people. Shayla dancing with unknowns?! At MY big age? In this new era?! It's a rarity, I tell you! But, I did it. And it was SOOO much fun. Not to mention, the wine was actually pretty damn tasty. Yep, I said it! It was tasty. I enjoyed their Viognier, Demi sec, Barbera, and sweet cider beer. Is it the best wine that I've ever had in my life?! No, not at all. But, it's still good for the occasion and extremely affordable. They've got a large list of both wine and beer, and it's $5 for 5 tastes. BRING THOSE PRICES BACK TO NAPA!!! I know, I know... it ain't gonna happen. But, at least it's still thriving out here. The family who own and operate this winery is wonderful. They were right there dancing and drinking with everyone else. I love the family feel here. This is a winery where everyone know one another. And if they don't know someone, they're gonna get to know you and embrace you. I instantly felt embraced. What a warm and fun little gem this place is! We stopped by, asked to do a flight. Lady at the counter gave us a menu and a sharpie to choose and mark the glass bottoms for what we wanted. We looked at the menu for maybe 2 minutes when another couple came in and perched at the bar beside us. What a great time at Sombra. we stopped in about a few weeks back and it was our 3rd stop of the valley. We had tried some good, and some not so good wines, and we had planned Sombra last at it had the best hours and had heard good things. We puled into the place and it was certainly popular. The outside was full of people. we went inside as we wanted to see about a tasting. The gal inside was busy at the bar prepping some things but when we stated our request she obliged quickly. As I recall were were able to try most anything. We tried some reds and some whites, and I think something sparking as well. The whole time I took in the vibe of the place. Everyone was in a great mood, no surprise there. The décor was really neat, I know I was checking out different things on the walls, wondering if any of it was for sale. What a darling little winery. It's a bit off the main road, so just drive down the long gravel lane and it's there on the right. When we were there, the patio was about ready to fill up and live music was gonna start. We just wanted to taste test and bring some bottles home if we liked them. $5 for a 5 taste experience. But they'll let you try as many as you want if they aren't busy. Friendly folks on staff. If you are heading to the winery with friends who don't do wine...yes, this place has beer. Clean bathrooms, lovely grounds, ample parking. I won't tell you which wines you'll like because everyone is different. Let me just say of the many South NM wineries we visited this day. I'm giving this vineyard the award for best hang out spot. They had their outdoor set up on point, with expected southwest decor and fire pits. Best part: the sunset, it was breathtaking! Watching the sun go down on a clear blue sky turning a range of colors that only the desert can paint. Then looking behind and seeing the Mountain Views. It was a clear reminder of why I love NM and west TX. I bought Theresa's blend off dry-red. They comp the tasting fee if one buys a bottle. Here, it's $5 for 5 tastes. $15 for 5 and you get to keep the glass. Or buy a bottle and the tastings and glass are complimentary. This is def the place to end the wine tasting day experience. If you're out on these back roads, you'll actually find quite a few vineyards and wineries. Sombra Antigua is one of my favorites because the ambiance makes you feel like you're at a friend's house that just so happens to make their own wine. The first time I came here was after my PIC and I had already done a tasting at another winery with some really full glasses so I knew that I needed to slow my roll since I was driving. That time we ended up just doing a lot of looking around. The grounds are beautiful and the views are picture perfect. I really enjoy sitting outside in the lawn chairs and I think most people that have been would agree that's the best place to have a glass or two of wine. And even though we get high heats in these parts, there's plenty of shaded areas so it feels really nice. They also have live music most weekends which adds to the enjoyment. If I remember correctly, the wine tastings are $5 (but you don't get to keep the glass). Last time we were here, I just opted for the white table wine and I thought it was really good. Light and a little sweet. The staff seems to mostly be family members and they're all very nice. The owner's also check on guests throughout the day. And on the two separate occasions that I've been here, there's always been options for food... on the first, menudo inside, on the second, a German food truck! I like Sombra Antigua. They have a lot of weekend events, there always seems to be options for eats (at least on the weekend), the family that owns the place is awesome, scenic views, and the wine is great! read more

THE ABSOLUTE WORST LOCAL WINERY EXPERIENCE EVER. My best friend, Cindy and brother, Tony reached out to Sombra Antigua 3-4 weeks in advance to make reservations for my 50th birthday celebration. The reservations were made for 30 people, four/five tables and Mary claimed that each table would seat 8 people. They inquired about catering and Mary indicated that they did allow outside catering for a fee of $50. The time agreed upon was 2:30 to 5:30. The day of the reservations, my son, daughter and I arrived at 2pm. We were met at the entrance by a woman who asked in the most unwelcoming manner "How many are you?". She was blocking the entrance. I told her that we had reservations and gave Cindy's name then my name and she said in a very rude tone, "All I have are reservations for Tony V." Still blocking us from entering she said, "I need to collect $50 for the catering fee from Tony immediately!" I told her I wasn't sure what time Tony would be arriving and asked if we could come in. She turned around and stomped her way to the segregated area that was reserved for us. I sat at the end of one of the tables which was nearest the small round table that Dave and Teresa, owners, normally sit at. I know their names because back when they first opened their winery they were actually pretty friendly. This particular day, sitting about 2 feet from Teresa, she never once made eye contact with me, never greeted me, much less wished me a Happy Birthday. A "thanks for celebrating with us" would have been nice. All she did was add to the level of discomfort felt when we were met at the entrance by Mary who we would soon find out was in charge of hospitality none the less. Right around 2:15, Mary approached me again and asked where Tony was because she needed to collect the $50. I told her I had no control over what time he would be arriving. The caterer arrived about 2:20. My brother had not arrived. Unbeknownst to me, Mary charged the catering fee to the caterer!!! Two of the tables reserved for us that Mary claimed would seat 8, only sat 4 because they were up against the wall. So, even with all the beautiful scenery around us, our guests were literally facing the wall. I asked Mary if we could connect one of those tables with the one I was sitting at to make one big table. And Mary in her discourteous rude manners tells me "Absolutely not!! ADA was here last week and cited us!! My compadre who is the most even keeled, level-headed person stood up and told Mary that she was very rude. Mary responds, again very aggressively "How so??!!" My compadre points out that all I did was ask a question and her response was unnecessary. Mary then walks over to my brother who was sitting down enjoying his meal and tells him in front of all our guests, "One of your guests complained about me!" My brother, asks who and Mary points to my Compadre. And my brother knowing my Compadre well says, "No way, not him." My Nina and Nino arrived and I greeted them. We were standing and talking as my Nina was pinning money on my blouse. And here comes Mary telling my Ninos that they need to sit down because they're in the way!! We just looked at each other in utter disbelief, finished our conversation and they politely sat down. When we arrived, we asked Mary if it would be ok for the three kids in our party to use the driveway that was roped off to play in. She said "Well, you know there's rattlesnakes....but I'll leave it up to your discretion." The kids were playing and being kids they ran through our area one time. I stopped the kids and talked to them about being respectful to the other guests and not to run through there anymore. Well, another woman approaches me in a hostile aggressive manner and asks whose kids they are. I stand up and tell her that they are mine and that I've already talked to them. She responds with "YOU NEED TO CONTAIN THEM!". I told her that I would not be doing that because they are not animals and she says "YOU NEED TO CONTAIN THEM!" All of our guests are witnessing this and honestly none of us could believe what was going on. This woman was vicious and confrontational. We're staring at each other and my Compadre tells her, "you can walk away now." She says, "I AM NOT WALKING AWAY!" She finally turns around to walk away and several of us say "Wow!". She turns around and says, "SAY IT TO MY FACE!!!" We had been there about an hour, give or take and needless to say we were done. We gathered our belongings and left. One of our guests reached out to John at Public House 28 and asked if they could accommodate a group of 20 people and he said "Come on over!" We had the best time. No one was hovering over us watching our every move. We even ran into patrons and employees from Sombra Antigua who witnessed our horrible experience and apologized for the way we were treated. My family and I had visited this winery about a week ago and we liked live music and nice atmosphere. We tried to have a nice time again inviting this time more relatives and friends. Big mistake!! They spoiled a perfect family time. I was saying good bye to my family in El Paso, since I'm flying back home to Houston the next day. A very un friendly lady started arguing and complaining to my boys and also my friend's kids after just 1 min they step to this place. Boys were doing nothing, but standing out of their chairs. No running, no screaming, nothing else, but being out of their chairs. Apparently, I wasn't aware that standing is a fault being in a public place or restaurant or whatever. She repeated the same behavior for about three more times. I went to her and asked if she was the owner of the place? And she said yes. She introduced herself as Teresa. And I got in shock so badly! This is the first time in my life that owner of the place is there just to be rude with kids. She actually instructed their employees (who actually were very apologetic about their boss behavior) to be rude to us too. I started to think if this was racist or just something against kids in their business. I was so ashamed I had brought more people thinking this was a nice place and what a surprise!!!. Different from last week just for the fact that 'owner' was there almost spanking our kids. So rude, so unfriendly, so sad!! I feel sorry my last afternoon in the area with family got dark for this uncomfortable situation. Terrible Experience at a Local Winery My family and friends had a terrible experience at what was my favorite winery, Sombra Antigua. We arranged for a 50th birthday celebration for my best friend at a place where we had visited since they opened years ago. The twenty people in our group left the winery within the hour of arriving feeling belittled, degraded, and victims of discrimination. A co-owner and party hostess were unprofessional, aggressive, and discriminatory. We were shocked at how they patrolled and glared at our group. They exhibited an extreme lack of professionalism and what every person in our party felt was discriminatory. We were not loud or disruptive during the hour that we were there. The entire experience was demeaning and hostile. Our group was stunned and speechless at the co-owner's reaction. It was the most humiliating experience we have ever had at a winery/eatery. This is not the Sombra Antigua that first opened their doors. The winery demonstrated that despite their advertisement as a family owned and operated business, they are not family friendly, kid-friendly, or friendly to local patrons. Great place and wine....terrible experience with the hostess Mary. We brought a group of 8 adults, ready to have a great time. From the start, our group was treated like if we were children and told to sit a certain way. She started arguing with one of our group members and essentially, she just wanted to win and customer service was not important at this point. Without being asked, she brought over the owner and stated "this is the owner and my best friend". At that point, I decided to intervene because she was obviously just trying to win something, what she was trying to win, we had no idea. The owner was a polite and nice to us. Kudos to her. Bottom line, Mary needs to take some lessons on how to talk to people, especially when the people she's talking to are paying customers for her "best friend's" business. We've been coming here for years, but on our first trip of 2023 things were very different. There was a woman in a hat who micromanaged everything from how far we were sitting from the table, to where our chairs were positioned around the table and where we were sitting with our group (who already had a table). It was really unfortunate that our fun afternoon turned into a high-strung and micromanaged situation. Great experience here! Great choice of wine and atmosphere was fantastic. The staff was so professional and friendly and made good suggestions for choosing a glass of wine to take to our table since tastings have changed due to Covid. We sat outside in the spacious patio area and loved the live music! Covid precautions were strongly enforced- tables were spaced well apart, masks were enforced in the tasting room and when leaving one's table as well. Everything seemed very clean and safe! Be forewarned- if you take an Uber out there, they will not pick you up (and Uber won't tell you that either so you'll be in for a surprise when you order one to leave)! We could not catch a break trying to find a ride back to El Paso, and the manager was so kind and dropped us off at a closer town so we could finally connect with an Uber. This is one of my favorite wineries in this area. We've been here several times and it's time for me to place my review. The first three times we did tastings. The workers are knowledgeable and very helpful. The owner has been there a couple times pouring also. The wines are very good. I seem to have bad timing because they've been out of Merlot the times I've done tastings. They have live music and a food truck, the food trucks have been different the times I've gone. I like having food trucks available. They also have water, sodas, Gatorade and ICE available for those who don't imbibe. They have nuts, cheese and other snacks available for purchase. Extremely rude and likely homophobic owners. This used to be a great, peaceful little place to go to relax and bring our snacks from home in a little cooler to enjoy with our wine. Yesterday was super dissapointing and anxiety-ridden experience. We pulled up to the parking lot and were immediately shocked by how many people were there - we're still in the midst of a global pandemic, we expected to see them open at partial capacity, so we were super dissapointed that the owners would allow the place to get stuffed with people like it was. When we walked into the patio, our shock was compounded as we realized that not only was the place stuffed to probably over capacity, but almost no one was wearing a mask outside and the tables weren't even placed a safe distance apart. There were people stuffed into the dance area as well, so absolutely no safety or precautions seemed to be expected from the owners whatsoever. As we entered the lobby, despite their being a huge sign at the entrance saying that masks were required, there were more people inside without masks on as well, and no one was respecting social distancing inside either. As we waited to order, we were approached by a very hostile man who demanded that we open our cooler for him. We were confused as to why this strange man was approaching us so rudely and asked him if he worked there and he identified himself as the owner. We opened the cooler and in a super hostile and aggressive tone, he told us we weren't allowed to have snacks. We were confused because there had always been snacks allowed, and we hadn't seen a sign or announcement online, but here we were getting yelled at anyway. We had to pay a $15 fee to be allowed to eat our snacks because apparently they now have a kitchen open but when asked what we could order we were told they only served cheese (). We were already so upset with the experience and we had only been there a few minutes- but we went outside anyway and found a table a safe distance from the crowd where we could sit and wait for the rest of our party but within a few minutes of settling in a brash woman approached our table, not wearing a mask, not staying a safe distance from us (we had removed our own masks at this point to start eating) and starts yelling at us that she needs to take our chairs. We told her that we were waiting on people and weren't exactly sure how many so we would rather keep the chairs until they arrived but she insisted (despite there being a huge sign asking folks not to move tables and chairs around, and despite there being other tables around with extra chairs, like why did she single us out?), and went back and forth arguing with us, until we just wanted her to leave us alone so we let her take one chair and watched as she took it to another table and then went back to wherever she had appeared from - so she wasn't a guest, she worked there! She wasn't dressed like the serving staff though (who wore masks and were polite) so she appears to be an owner or manager as well. We were upset - starting with the fact that the owners don't seem to care about the health and safety of their staff or customers amidst a deadly global pandemic to the treatment we received from the owners. There were people breaking stated rules left and right and none of them were getting harrassed but within minutes we are immediately pounced on by the owners multiple times. My girlfriend has been going to that place for years and since we met we've been there together a couple of times and were never treated like that until yesterday - which was the first time we came in as an obvious and openly gay couple and I'd be lying if I didn't say that from the moment the owner approached us the way he did in the lobby, I was already wondering if that was why. Nothing else is different, and it was so unecessarily aggressive, it felt like they were just trying to get us to leave. Never going back, I can't believe the way we were treated by those awful people. LGBTQ+ folks, I would not consider this a safe/welcoming place to go. read more

It was an excellent smooth body red wine with a hint of sweet berry flavor. There were lots of seating and parking. Military friendly (10% discount with ID card) and pet friendly. Great find, even though the place has been there for 10 years (7 years for tasting), I just discovered it. you have to turn into a gravel road from hwy 28 and go about 1/4 mile and suddenly, this beautiful place appears. Had a birthday party for my wife and Theresa and Dave, the owners, were just excellent. This was a "reserve for the evening", from 6:00 PM to 10:00 PM and Theresa helped us with the planning a week in advance. Pleasantly surprised by this tucked-away gem, not visible from the main road. Incredibly kept, the property is a green oasis in the middle of the desert. Manny M's review deserves a rebuttal. Everyone's money for the most part is hard earned, including that of the winery's owner. I can only venture a guess that if they knew you were going to try to cause harm to their business by not letting you take glassware for which you had not paid, he might have been willing to negotiate a settlement. Manny, I am not sure you are a good customer to anyone no matter how much you spend if you feel entitled to take glassware home after having wine. When I visit an establishment, restaurant or winery that does NOT include take home glassware as part of their wine experience, and taking home the glassware is important to me, then I offer to buy it like any proper person would do. I have spent much more money than you alleged to have spent in many an establishment and have never felt entitled to take my glassware home. What's wrong with you? read more

Loved the outdoor patio. They had a guitarist and singer performing on a sunny Saturday afternoon. Best part was the awesome German food truck standing by with amazing brats. Sadly they were out of nearly all their whites and several reds so I wasn't able to sample the wines I really wanted to try. All in all the wines were only ok and the servers doing the tastings simply described their wine as "awesome" and "even more awesome." So kinda lacking in the professionalism department (everyone was nice though). When we asked one of the workers to take our group photo she seemed a little confused and put out by the request. Hard to beat an amazing day with friends but I wasnt overly impressed. That being said the manager or owner, not sure which, stopped by to say hello to our group which I thought was a nice touch. We went here with another couple two weeks ago.Our first trip to a winery anywhere... La Sombra offers a relaxing and comfortable atmosphere to spend a lazy Saturday afternoon. Outdoor patio looking over the vineyard, misters and ceiling fans, bistro tables and live music. Great job creating a quiet space. On Saturdays there is live music provided by young locals playing the guitar and singing. This is not where you are going to find the next great star but the music is good and adds to the laid back atmosphere. There is also a gourmet food truck there on Saturdays; we had the tapas. Excellent! Fresh, flavorful, put together and presented well - a great plate to enjoy around the table. About the wine... I'm not a wine guy so I won't bother trying to sound like I know what I'm talking about. We all had a few different wines and found at least one we liked. It was great afternoon in the countryside sitting back, enjoying conversation, and letting stresses go. Highly recommended for anyone in El Paso looking to get away. This was my 4th or 5th visit to Sombra with my family. My last visit was decent but I bought a souvenir and forgot it there, went back to get it and they acted like they didn't know me. Anyway, this visit was during the Covid19 crisis. My family and I were hitting all the wineries on Hwy 28. All the ones that were in NM were not allowing you to consume on the premises or allowing tastings. However, we wanted to support them all and buy a bottle from each. We drove up to the place and saw quite a few people there with glasses out and drinking, which surprised us because the last 2 places said that was illegal. Now, we are on this Winery tour with my father in law and mother in law who speak no English. We come to the lobby, we are telling my father and mother in law that only 1 person is allowed in the building at the same time in Spanish. Then the lady comes out and says loudly, "I am sorry, no children on the premises." I did have 2 boys with me, 18 and 12. There was a table right next to the door that also had 2 kids that were obviously around 15 years old and a table with dogs, which there was a sign that said 'no pets.' My kids have been there with us on all of our other visits and it was fine. I don't know what changed this time but we were rudely kicked out. Probably wouldn't have wrote and would have definitely bought wine this if they came up to us discretely and/or told the English Speaking Family the same thing. read more

Beautiful gem in the Mesilla Valley/Chamberino area. I'm embarrassed to say that I've been coming to this area my whole life and this past weekend was the first time I had ever really paid attention to the signage and location. We went to the winery because my honey's cousin was launching her book. I was so surprised and I can honestly say it won't be my last visit here. We ended up with glasses of their Dolcette wine. I'm typically a dry red wine gal but I was in the mood for something with just a tinge of sweetness and this blend hit the spot. Samples are free and a modest glass is $8 and bottles run around $28. I love local buys. The outdoor garden sitting area has shaded tables and for those sun-loving folks you have your pick as well. We went on a Sunday afternoon and there was a talented duo entertaining the crowd. Most wineries I've been have some sort of cheese and cracker for the taking but this spot had chips and queso with green chile - doesn't get more local than that! It was delicious. Wine and music were good until the end. The owner was at the gate collecting our glasses. Other wineries let you keep the glass after a wine tasting. And after spending more than 200 bucks of my hard earned money. And they cheapen the experience! I'm not going back!!!! read more

Coming back to the valley was a great surprise. The reds are great. Montepulciano, tempranillo, and Zinfandel are great!
