Compared to other contractors that I know, Matrix deserves 5 stars. I gave only 4 because nobody is perfect, but they come pretty close in the world of contracting. 4.5 would be more precise. What got our attention mostly is the material they use. The walls are made with foam insulation sandwiched between two sheets of magnesium board. A basement flood won't destroy your basement, and the material is stronger than regular drywall. The drop ceiling sits straight and the floor looks great too. At first we wanted to know how much just the material would cost us, because we wanted to save money the dyi way. During the estimation process we had them price out the complete contract as well. Then we decided to save ourselves a lot of headaches by letting them do almost the whole job. I like doing the finishing work myself, such as trim and doors. That saved us a few bucks and gives me a few weekend projects.

They didn't get one of the room sizes correct, it was literally the size of a closet -- and then tried to blame the blueprints, even though their own measurements were wrong. Despite that, they still charged me to fix their mistake. Then, after agreeing to a $107,000 price to finish my basement (yes, they are that expensive), they had the audacity to bill me separately for the permits. Imagine agreeing to a six‑figure renovation and then being told the permits aren't included. They claimed it was "in the fine print," even though the fine print only says the home owner is responsible for the permits, however it doesn't say that the cost is separate from the total. To make matters worse, they still haven't picked up their trash (pictures below have been in my basement for the last month and a half). It's been sitting in my basement and garage, and the project has been at a standstill for four weeks with zero communication or progress. Stay far away from this company. They are extremely overpriced and provide terrible customer service.

The owner has been courteous and friendly. He explained what the job entailed and the materials that would be used. His assistant Wolfgang was great too. They did the roof in a day and did a good clean up job. Some of the siding had to be adjusted but so far does not seem like any thing major. There were a few issues with a few items that needed addressed but the owner addressed them quickly. I did find out that I had to get my satellite reinstalled because it was on my roof which was unknown to me but obvious when you think about it. Direct tv is going to charge me $49 to reinstall but I will deal with that with them. Overall, so far it has been a good job. One last item is the dumpster but it is the weekend. Fred was very easy to work with and the crew he sent out was fabulous. I am VERY picky about the details and I think the lead installer was as picky as I was which is very rare.
