My divorce was pretty cut and dry. We just needed someone to write up the legalese for us. The retainer was $5,000, but I think I wound up paying about twice that because Nelson just would. not. listen. to. me. about how I wanted to handle things. I'm sure that he thought that he was doing his due diligence for his client, but after the client (me) has answered multiple times, I really feel like the lawyer should just shut up and listen. On top of that, he made MANY errors in our paperwork, and, naturally, charged me to fix them. I will never, ever recommend him, and I will, in fact, advise other people to stay away from him. On the bright side, the Accountant, Ruth Zetlin, is lovely, and despite the fact that I only dealt with her regarding billing, I appreciated every interaction. Edit added to respond to the comment from the firm below: My divorce was actually pretty straightforward. We split everything 50/50. The problems and delays arose when Nelson tried to talk me out of decisions that my ex-husband and I had already made (e.g. that I would not extend the 50/50 split of his 401k accounts after the date that I officially moved out).
