While we were trying to schedule, she said a newborn shoot would be extra. I requested a refund and she refused. Update: Talula's response misrepresents a lot of important information. We never actually rescheduled the Christmas card session, we only discussed my willingness to. She proposed a date but I declined because I had a family emergency and had to leave town. Therefore, it is inaccurate to say that I "rescheduled and then cancelled". Instead, I asked to pivot to a mini newborn-style shoot since we no longer had a need for Christmas card photos, and she agreed with no mention of added cost or clarification of what that meant. Later on she proposed a possible date, I told her it worked for me and asked how to prepare. The following day she said she thought we were doing a family shoot and mentioned it would be an upcharge for a newborn shoot. That should have been disclosed earlier. After she no-showed the original shoot and failed to clearly communicate the terms of a replacement session, a refund would have been the legally appropriate and professional response according to the contract. Instead, she's continued to shift the narrative to excuse poor handling of the situation.

This could be a great opportunity to see if she'd be a good fit for us. Eventually, she responded, asking if I'd be available for a Wednesday morning sunrise session. I agreed without hesitation. The next day, she contacted me again, asking if we could do the session that evening instead. I said yes, but I needed to know the time. She replied with something vague like, "Ooo, I don't know... maybe 5 p.m.?" Her response felt wishy-washy, but I confirmed that 5 p.m. worked for me. By 3:00 p.m., I still hadn't heard back, so I followed up to check if we were still meeting at 5:00 p.m. and where the shoot would be. I began getting ready, as it took me a while to prepare myself and my family. Keep in mind that I'd also canceled my prior engagements and evening plans - it was a big commitment on our end. When 5:00 p.m. came and went without a word from her, I decided to give it another hour, hoping I'd hear from her while there was still daylight. But nothing. Regardless of being a model, I felt frustrated that she lacked the communication to tell me that she ended up choosing someone else for the session and gave the excuse that her "phone had died." After such a disappointing experience, I realized I wouldn't want to actually book with her, nor would I recommend her to anyone.

Katie responded right away, and I liked that they offered a "one hour" package as well as the "lifestyle shoot" that is typical. She was flexible in letting me feel out what I needed, but this arrangement made Merkle Photography more than competitive on price. It took a few reschedules to get to our session -- my ring resizing, the weather, an injury Katie sustained -- but when we finally got to a Saturday that worked for all of us, it was freezing cold outside. (What a month to do photos!) Katie and Thomas didn't blink an eye and met us at the icy tidal basin for some 20 degree photography. We lasted about 20 minutes out there, and then I asked them to go to a museum -- one they'd never been to. They did an incredible job finding creative shots and working with an unfamiliar location. My advice: just follow their advice! They know what shots they are going for, and they will be striking and unique. So far, we've only received a "Sneak Peek" of about five photos -- but those were up the same night, and we were just blown away by shots we didn't even realize they were getting. Our friends can't get over what genuine artists we found for a routine engagement shoot. I wish I could afford to fly Katie out to my wedding in CA, too! She was reasonably priced, had nice work on her website, and could meet us during our only free block of time. We sent a modest deposit and hoped we weren't going to be taken for a ride or met by a pornographer. Well, gosh were we pleasantly surprised. Despite a broken ankle, broken glasses and forgetting our clothes (no, not like that), Ruut showed up, took over and turned things around. She did an amazing job for my family, at an amazing price.
