TLDR: Photographer no-showed on our Christmas card shoot. I tried to reschedule as a newborn shoot…read moresince it was too late for card photos. While we were trying to schedule, she said a newborn shoot would be extra. I requested a refund and she refused. Update: Talula's response misrepresents a lot of important information. We never actually rescheduled the Christmas card session, we only discussed my willingness to. She proposed a date but I declined because I had a family emergency and had to leave town. Therefore, it is inaccurate to say that I "rescheduled and then cancelled". Instead, I asked to pivot to a mini newborn-style shoot since we no longer had a need for Christmas card photos, and she agreed with no mention of added cost or clarification of what that meant. Later on she proposed a possible date, I told her it worked for me and asked how to prepare. The following day she said she thought we were doing a family shoot and mentioned it would be an upcharge for a newborn shoot. That should have been disclosed earlier. After she no-showed the original shoot and failed to clearly communicate the terms of a replacement session, a refund would have been the legally appropriate and professional response according to the contract. Instead, she's continued to shift the narrative to excuse poor handling of the situation.

It started with a lovely phone call for us to get to know each other and for Liz to get to know what our goal was for the photos. In our case the studio session was the right call. Our little one had some minor issues that left our hospital discharge date in limbo but Liz was so kind and accommodating in working with us to find the best day. It was a relief because it allowed my husband to join and worked around his crazy schedule. The studio is warm and welcoming. Liz is such an easy and gentle person and it was such a pleasure to chat with her during the session. Being a nurse and having little ones herself made me feel extra safe handing over my two week old for a couple of hours. She was really receptive to our wants for the photos. They turned out absolutely adorable! I squealed when I got the final images. We got some family shots, some cutesy shots, and some detail shots as well. A perfect mix to remember our baby girl's first few weeks of life. If you're anywhere in the DMV area I encourage you to reach out to Liz. I messaged her in the weeks leading up to my due date just to confirm her availability. She was great and very responsive. Fast forward to the day I left the hospital after giving birth I texted her but received no response. Three days later, with a five day old, I tried to reach her again. She did not return my phone call but texted me after multiple attempts on my part to reach her. She said she thought she would be available "next Sunday"- I asked which Sunday she meant and she didn't respond but "didn't have a calendar with her" and would have to let me know. Fast forward five days and still no response. I messaged her to let her know I booked with another photographer and that I didn't appreciate the lack of communication. Then she said she emailed me a confirmation email - didn't I get it? And to check my spam. There was nothing in any of my emails- inbox or spam. She couldn't tell me which email address she sent the confirmation to, which was not surprising because we had never corresponded over email, text only, and I had never even given her my email address. Bottom line: poor communication, bad business practices, waste of $$. It's 2014, the line "the email must not have gone through" doesn't work anymore. If you are a new mom thinking about getting newborn photos save yourself a headache and book with someone else. (You get what you pay for.) I'll be contacting Living Social.

On April 24th, we finally managed to have the shoot after a month of unfavorable weather, as we were planning an outdoor shoot. Stacey came on time and we had an amazing time! But that was the end of the fairy tale, the rest is a horror story! We paid Stacey her retainer before the shoot, and were told to pay the remaining after the shoot, which we did. We paid her the total amount for a full family shot, and she promised to deliver the photos in 7-10 days. Two weeks later, as I never heard back from her, I tried calling her and emailing her, I was unable to leave a voice mail and she didn't respond to my texts. She got back to me a few days later apologizing and asking me to pay the balance minus a rebate as she was late in delivery, and promising to post the photos the next day. I was surprised as we had already paid this woman the total amount. I emailed her back with a copy of my card statement showing that we paid her the full amount already. And since that day we never ever heard back from her. Never. I first thought something happened to her, and I was genuinely worried. Even my husband thought the same. I realized we had common Facebook friends, so I tried to find out if she was fine, after getting a confirmation that she was fine and her family was fine too, I decided enough was enough and I will let everyone know what she has done to us. We emailed and called and texted, but never got a response, and I left her several voice messages as well. This woman has disappeared with our photos and the money from our session. I am horrified that someone so highly praised in the industry in the area can risk her reputation and behave in this way. Not only we couldn't get our photos, she took our time and money. We really wanted to have photos with our son, before he outgrows his baby chubbiness. Stacey knew this very well. This woman is an absolute fraud and do not trust her!! She stole our memories, the one thing we paid her for. Don't trust her, you have been warned!

But it's clear to me, they just take whoever submits an application. The project was advertised as a free mini session (15 mins) with a 5x7 portrait included. I signed up and had to put a $200 deposit down. I was annoyed by this - since it was advertised as "free." I got to the studio and from the outside it looked a bit sketchy. I almost didn't go in. But, it was fine inside. I worked with Jake to do my session. He was nice, but he talked to me the whole time and wanted me to talk back. It shows in the pictures. I'm talking, my eyes are closed, and they are awkward. He wanted me to spin around and close my eyes at times. Very strange prompts. There wasn't much direction in terms of body position. I felt awkward. You can tell in the photos. He wanted me to lay in the ground which felt really strange to me. I felt like a little girl and I'm 40. Def not the right pose for someone my age! I went through the photos the next day with Elena. She was helpful. But, I have to say, I HATED most of them. They used a really low angle when shooting most of the photos and it made me look like I had a huge double chin. I also felt the extra "10 lbs" the camera added. We narrowed 150 photos down to 2 or 3 that I kinda liked, but didn't love. Then she started talking to me about pricing. I couldn't believe the costs!! They charge $599 for 1 digital print. ONE! Unreal. No way I was going to pay that for a mediocre photo of me. So, I just got the freebie. Then they said it takes up to 6 weeks and I haven't heard back yet. Not a good experience!!! It felt like a bait and switch. Here's this free session - oh JK - that'll be $600! I don't recommend.

What I've learned after 4 babies, is that a good photographer is worth the price. Moments float by quickly and the next best thing to a time machine is a great photo. In the end, Naz is not expensive. She is upfront with her prices. Other photographers can either be subpar or will up sell you once their session is over. I will tell you that I hate pictures and am very critical in the way I look in them. I was surprised at how great i looked. My oldest has the most unnatural smile, kid #3 thinks he's funny and will do the opposite of what you ask and the baby hates strangers. I thought it was going to be the worse day ever. She worked with me to narrow down our location and vision (I was scattered and had a lot of conflicting ideas) -- all with patience, calm and a steadiness that made me feel super confident with our final plan. Did I mention, I kept changing my mind on everything...?! Naz is super creative, personable and has a magnetic presence that makes you feel completely at ease. Even my super wiggly, active and spazzy 2-year old (who, at the time, was a late walker and just getting a handle on moving around on his own) sat still for and gravitated toward the camera.
