I was having trouble with my 5 year old weed eater I bought from a big box store in Billings. It would seem that store did not carry the string pre wound spool any more. I made numerous phone calls but to no avail. My husband and I did a lot of frustrating research for a new reliable weed eater. We went to our "local" Ace Hardware. We were disappointed in their selection. The person assisting us said he used one brand of weed eater at the store and another at home. He didn't give me a great deal of confidence. We went to the Ace Hardware in Laurel, MT. I insisted we open the box and look at the manuals. The clerk helping us called Rodney to help us. Purchased a battery powered weed trimmer after being assured by rep it would do the job. Lasted 15 minutes. Tried to take it back and they insisted it wasn't their problem. Sent to their repair shop and they couldn't fix and insisted it wasn't their problem. After several hours on the phone with the manufacturer sounds like I "may" have a replacement coming. My suggestion is anything over say $25 bucks buy from Home Depot or Costco as they honor returns with zero hassle. I will do my best to not support this store going forward. read more

These guys are always willing to help. Let the gals know at the counter what department you're heading to and they will announce staff to meet you there. I can call something a thingamajig and they'll know what I want. They will listen when I explain what I have in mind for a project and will politely stay silent without laughing. They will accommodate your ideas but if you should ask, they are very willing to give suggestions without mocking your gender or crazy ideas. A couple saw I had a dead vehicle when it was store closing time. They stayed trying to help and one did not leave until I had found an alternative. I am inquisitive and like to know how things work. I could possibly pass a plumbers exam. I know I am paying more for most things I could get at a better price down the road, but I have asked these guys the different varieties of screws and how and why they are different. I have learnt so much from them throughout the years and always leave knowing more then when I came. Sure they cost a little bit more, but you can't put a price on knowledge. I'm pretty conflicted about this. Going into the store itself, the employees are quite helpful. You used to be able to drop off your lawn mower there and they fixed it in store. Obviously they did such a great job I didn't need to bring my mower back for 2yrs. And this is when things went off the rails. I am on my 2nd return because it wasn't fixed the first time. This time around there is gas leaking out of ??? I should have questioned how they tested it before return when I had to add fuel to a bone dry fuel tank the day I got it back. And had a nasty gas cloud at start up. Still waiting for them to come pick it up and fix it right this time. Pretty sure I will be looking for somewhere else to take it in next year. Hopefully Gary will have retired and doing them at his house. He is a wizard at repairing. read more

By far the best customer service out of any hardware store I've been to. No need to ask for help, they will ask you before you get a chance! And they actually seem to want to help you rather than most places where they only help cuz they have to. read more
