If you aren't desperate, take the time to shop elsewhere. The staff is rude and any inquiries about any hardware item is met with a blank stare. The large overweight man will mix a can of paint and leave it on the floor instead of bringing it to the counter. Their knowledge of simple electrical items is priceless. I watched a novice DIY customer search for a dimmer and switch box. The staff became insolent and told the customer an outrageous story concerning their line of switch boxes. All of it was so wrong. To add more fuel to this, watch what happens when you bring in a screen to be repaired. They will tell you " they have no idea when it will be done"NO IDEA! Update: I've grown to like the lady at the register. I've learnt not to ask her to take a credit card for purchases under $10. Seriously. I will never again drive off the island for hardware as long as these guys are in business. I urge all my neighbors from Berkeley/South Seaside to Point Pleasant Beach to do the same. read more

after over 20 years of doing business I just tried to return a $10.59 item for either store credit or cash and did not have my receipt. they denied my return with their reasoning being that they need the barcode to scan the item and it is only on the receipt. so much for a small town business. losing a customer after all these years that have spent thousands over the years. smart business read more

This hardware store is an excellent resource for quick needs. The staff is highly knowledgeable and helpful. You can literally ask them for an obscure item and be out the door in just a few minutes. They will even offer advice on choices and repairs. The pricing is reasonable, considering they're on the island, and you'll save a lot of time and frustration having to go over to Lowes or Home Depot. Besides, good luck getting help at those big box home supply centers. I've been going to Lavallette Hardware for over 20 years and never had a bad experience. Remember to keep your receipt in case you need to return or exchange an item. The negative reviews regarding this issue are not fair at all. Why is it so hard to retain your receipt? If you need pipe or tubing, they actually sell it by the foot, instead of having to buy a complete length at a big box store. I had to replace an outside faucet, and brought in a piece of the PEX tubing that was connected to the old faucet. They actually took the time to bring me in back and get me all of the fittings needed, pieces of PEX, and explained how to assemble everything. Now that's service!! I will gladly pay a few extra bucks for quick service and product availability, with great service to boot! Those who complain about a slight price difference compared to the competition obviously do not value excellent service and time savings. I have yet to stump them with a question. I've had several situations where I had no idea how to resolve a repair issue. I explained the situation, and even brought pics to help them understand the issue, and they always had an answer and the products to do the job. Disregard the negative reviews. This is the best hardware store that I've been to. When you're at the shore, you want to relax and not waste time. If you need something quick, this is the place to go. I don't like spending over an hour and a half round trip to Lowes or Home Depot, not be able to find a helpful associate that actually understands what they sell, and then have to wait in a long checkout line. That's cutting into my beach, beverage and relaxation time! Buy local and save a business!! Big box stores will survive, but our local businesses really need our help, especially in a time like this. Local restaurants, stores, and service providers really need your patronage. They have a short period of time in the summer to make enough money to survive and continue to service our community. Parting Note: After Hurricane Sandy, Lavallette Hardware was flooded and they quickly cleaned up and restocked to help the community. My husband and I have shopped at Lavallette Hardware many, many times. We have always found what we are looking for and am amazed at how many items they have crammed into this store. Horrible experience. We bought 8 of the wrong size wing-nuts for $25 and they did not give us a receipt. We returned to the store 20 mins later (with the same employees helping us AGAIN) to exchange our wing-nuts for the RIGHT size, which were much cheaper than the original ones that we purchased. They would not even let us exchange the wing nuts for the RIGHT ones. This place likes to scam their customers. read more

Having lived here my entire life I try to support the local businesses but this one I cannot any longer. For years the convenience and thought of supporting the locals was paramount to me. No more. Terrible customer service. Flat out rude. A total rip off on pricing (which for years to me was ok given the convenience and the thought of supporting local businesses esp post sandy) They will try to up sell you on things you simply will never need. They will not take exchanges because their antiquated system can not process without the detailed receipt (not the one you can get from your credit card companies if you lose your receipt only their receipt will do). If you don't want to leave the Island and go to HD or Lowes, this Mom and Pop store is your best bet. Pretty good selection for what you may need. Prices are reasonable. The staff is courteous and helpful. The aisles are a bit tight to maneuver but again it has that old store feel to it. read more

Before writing this review I needed to first find out if Lavallette Hardware was under new ownership. From what I can tell, that is not the case and I was very surprised. My experience there yesterday was the complete opposite of every visit I have made to the store over he past seven years (and there have been many). Lavallette Hardware always stood out as a place you knew you would be greeted with friendly, knowledgeable, courteous, and efficient service. However, yesterday my wife and I encountered one of the worst customer service experiences we have ever endured. We approached the front counter to make a return and have keys made. We were met by a young lady seated in a chair with a blank stare on her face. We had to repeat our request only to be greeted with barely a mumble. She could not have been any more unhelpful. We had the keys made (6 basic keys for $25) only to be then told that they couldn't do our return of unused items because they were purchased 39 days ago. Apparently returns are not accepted after 30 days, even if unopened and with a receipt, a fact that is not stated on the receipt. I spoke with Randy, one of the owners, whose only response was, "OK", no apology, no offer for mediation. We can never go back there. read more
