I always like to support independent stores rather than keep giving money to corporate giants like Lowe's and Home Depot. This being said, I understand Mom and Pop shops can't compete with the prices of the big guys, so I naturally expect to pay a little "extra" for the convenience of shopping in a neighborhood store. But there's such thing as a "mark-up" and there is straight up price gouging and ripping off customers!!! I needed a simple Mortise Lock for a patio door, so I went to Home Depot and bought one. It had a vertical lever slot, and when I got home, I found out I needed one with a 45 degree lever slot. I called Ken's and they said they had one. I went there and saw the exact same mortise lock that I had bought at Home Depot for $13.48, cost $21.97 at Ken's. It was raining out, it was late in the afternoon, and I needed to fix my patio door, so I went ahead, bit my lip, and paid the exorbitant mark-up. All I can say is, I hope Ken's Hardware enjoy's the extra $8.49 they took from me, because I will never give them another red cent. And, if anyone ever asks me, I will tell them not to bother shopping there, because they are obviously way overpriced and don't mind gouging their customers. I'm still shaking my head over how someone can justify this large of a mark-up, especially on an item that should realistically cost about seven dollars at the most. read more

Last Monday I drove cross town to Ken's as I was told I need two new nuts & bolts for my husbands walker because it was wobbly. Dana and Jan took a look and determined I didn't need new bolts & nuts but all the bolts needed to be tightened. They spent at least 30 minutes, if not longer, to tighten every bolt on the worker. Since each bolt was different they had to find the correct tool needed to tighten each and every bolt. Once they finished the walker was a stable and sturdy once again. Before my husband took ill he would have been able to do this himself as he was very handy. Now I depend on the help of others. I so appreciate all the time & effort Dana & Jan gave me with no charge. I can't begin to say how much I appreciate their kindness & expertise. There is no place like Ken's! If you need something they will get it for you and many times bring you several different types of what you need. read more

I have been coming to this hardware store for almost 10 years. In the past I've always been treated with courtesy and respect until recently. On my way to work this morning. I stopped in to pick up a couple of screws. The guy that helped me ask what I needed and I told him the exact pitch and size of the item I needed. He was absolutely clueless when I told him that I needed 4-40 x 3/8 pan head. When I began to explain what the numbers meant, he began to act very childish, told me to be quiet, then walked away saying that he couldn't help me for somebody else to do it. If you work at a hardware store, you should absolutely know how to identify a screw. I don't think I'll be going back for a while. The guy behind the counter really should learn how to talk to people. Also, I'm finding that their prices are starting g to get a bit ridiculously overpriced. 1.80 for 1 screw. This place and its staff are simply amazing, very refreshing after being brainwashed by the big box places for so many years. I visited last summer while on vacation needing to repair my PWC lift. I had gone to a marine store for stainless steel cable. They didn't have what I needed so I asked them if they thought Home Depot or Lowes might carry it. They said "Try Ken's Hardware". I figured give it a try. The experience was awesome. I walked in, and was immediately greeted by a team member who offered to help me find the cable. He walked with me, asked what the application was, made a few recommendations, helped me cut the proper length, recommended specific fittings, and provided advice on how to install and protect the wire. Of course I walked around for another 30 minutes finding other things that I surely "needed" and walked out shaking my head. What an amazing experience. I feel a certain obligation to support my local hardware store. I don't always go to the big chain stores. As a matter of fact, I avoid them unless I have to. Ken's has been around forever and has pretty much anything you might need. From gardening tool to nuts and bolts (even pool supplies!), Ken's pretty much anything! If you can't find it, just ask. The staff will gladly help you find something and they regularly walk you down the isles to show you exactly where something is, not just say "it's in aisle 9" like most of the bigger chains. Now, with the mega-giant home improvement centers choking out the mom and pop shops - it's time - more then ever - to support the small establishments such as Kens. Last summer, whilst on vacation, I bought carpentry supplies there since I volunteer at the Jersey Shore's Hammer That for Humanity as well as the Island Heights Preservation Society.
