Dr Holland doesn't have the greatest bedside manner. He did a knee replacement for me, which after 1 year, still gives me pain. I'm back to being active but only if I take the Advil/tylenol cocktail and wear a knee brace. Started having pain in my other knee, had imaging done requested by my PCP thinking it could be a Baker's cyst, but Dr Holland disregarded that and was confident it was something else so he suggested I get a shot which I had previously done with my first knee. Fast forward to getting bill for my visits and I get 3 notifications for 1 bill - email text and hard copy. Trying to get that to just one notification (email) and yikes!! They use a 3rd party company (InstaMed) and between those 2 (OPA and InstaMed) I was told to call one and then the other and back again. I gave up, paid my bill directly with OPA and now hope to be done with them read more

Dr. Holland replaced my left knee almost a dozen years ago now. It has not bothered me a whit once PT was over. I would trust him to give me a brain replacement if it was available. Great work from a great doctor. read more

Dr Holland did my TKR in 2020. The result is a leg that only bends 70 degrees basically leaving me with a painful peg leg for the last year and half. More importantly for your consideration......is Dr Holland's arrogant and dismissive nature, to not even take his time to properly diagnose and treat a problem. Realize once you have picked an Orthopedic Surgeon such as Dr Holland and you encounter a problem he does not treat, you can be banished from getting a second opinion or an even from a prescribed Arthrocentesis that determines an infection with your implant, as I have. read more

I had both my knees totally replaced back in 2015. The surgeries were done individually with about 5 months in between. Dr Holland did a fantastic job and was a pleasure to work with. I had complete recovery of both knees within months of my surgeries. I am told this is not the norm but this has been my experience. I was 57 or so when I had the surgeries. Since that time I am skiing, mountain biking, walking around 20 - 25 mile per week all without pain. My experience with Dr Holland was very good from the first meeting. I never felt any pressure to get the procedures done. I think a year or more passed from the time of my first appointment to my first surgery. My time in the hospital was short and very comfortable. My procedures were done early in the morning and they had me up for a walk late that afternoon I think I spent two nights at the hospiital each time. I highly recommend Dr Holland. I have one friend that had his knee replaced with Dr Holland as well and he had the same good experience. read more

Dr. Lawrence E. Holland OPA Ortho Swedish Seattle I had an appointment with Dr. Lawrence Holland for assessment of both of my knees. I was told by my local provider I needed to have them replaced. I chose Dr. Holland based on his history with many years of surgery for all types of patients including sports injuries. I drove 3 hours to the Swedish Hospital downtown Seattle. I parked in an underground parking area, took 2 elevators, across the foot bridge and was checked in, seen by the doctor and back to my car in less than 30 minutes. I didn't have to pay for parking, so I guess that was a plus. My point being this guy did NOT do an exam on me. I was given a pair of paper shorts to put on and told he would be in for the exam. He entered the room, showed me my X-rays (which I brought to the visit from a prior Dr.) He never touched me, manipulated my knees in anyway or had me stand or walk for him. He also did not order his own set of X-rays or test. Although he was nice enough to point out the worn bone on bone in both of knees his suggestion was to lose weight, take oral meds so that I can get my insurance to cover Hyalgan injections. Sent me home with Voltaren and told me to follow up with my rheumatologist. Below is the exact verbiage from the letter I received from his office after my appointment. Physical Examination "On exam, patient is 5' 7", and reports her weight as being 220. She has a genu varum bilaterally. She lacks 10 degree of extension bilaterally with flexion in 105 degree range. She walks with a very robotic gait. Her motoneural exam is otherwise within normal limits." Imaging Studies "I did review her outside studies. She has had a negative Doppler for DVT, but has x-rays that show extensive tricompartmental DJD and a varus deformity." Plan "I have informed her that the options with arthritis are pretty straightforward. You can do nothing, take antiinflamms, go with injectable solutions such as viscoelastic supplement, or go with a join replacement. She is really too young to think in terms of joint replacement although if everything else fails, that would be the obvious thing on the table. She reports that she has had Hyalgan in the past. I am going to place her Voltaren 75 MG PO BID. That may wreak havoc with here stomach having has gastric bypass, but I think it is a good starting point. Her diagnosis is osteoarthritis of both knees". Please tell me how this man can write a visit summary like this without even doing a proper exam. I was highly disappointed with him. I suspect he just had bigger fish to fry because I have now gone to another doctor for a second opinion and was in fact advised that I should proceed with surgery. read more

As a technician, Dr. Holland is excellent. My wife's knee is straight. Her foot is more aligned than previous. But as a caring, understanding doctor, he falls very short of the bar. My wife experienced a lot of swelling and pain. She still has pain after 2+ years. Now, we see what appears like a screw head on top of the knee cap. When confronted or questioned about pain concerns or lack of sleep, he shrugged off concerns as did his assistant, making her feel unwelcome. He even suggested she seek another opinion. It's one thing to have a reputation, but to think a patient with difficulty is the issue is not a very good doctor in this husband's opinion. And, he apparently can't manage his staff effectively. I would not use him. He should retire. read more

If, after a particularly brutal superhero crime fighting session, you realize you managed to tear your ACL and meniscus (or like me, in an extremely competitive game of professional Budgetball), you're likely wanting to identify some of the best orthopedic surgeons in the area to repair your damaged limb. Thankfully, I've done the tedious research for you. Dr. Holland recently reconstructed my ACL and repaired my damaged meniscus, and I couldn't be more pleased with the entire experience (of course, I'm still doped up from the narcotics, but that did not influence this opinion). From my initial consultation, Dr. Holland took the time to explain the injury, explain my options (along with the benefits and considerations of each), and thoroughly answer all of my questions and concerns. While he balked at installing the bionic leg I was hoping for (fine, my insurance wasn't going to pay for that anyway), the actual surgery went much better than I could have hoped. I know this because he provided me with a DVD of the procedure afterward. I am now well on the road to recovery and owe much gratitude to Dr. Holland for his skill and professionalism. You want more? Terrible mismanagement of my injury. Instead of referring me to someone more knowledgeable, after a few months he "turfed" me to a clinic at another hospital for surgery because he did not want to operate on me and his associates had no room on their schedule. And the "special" clinic he told me he was sending me to did not even exist. My injury happened 9 months ago. If i had gone through with the surgery he recommended, it would be another 9-12 months before i might regain full use again. Rather, i sought another opinion, had surgery, and am expected to be 100% in 3 months. I had previously gone to him for issues with my knee. He would tell me one thing, and then write something else in his reports. Example: he was going to scope my good knee because i was having some problems with it. However, when i called to schedule the procedure, his nurse said the notes indicated my bad knee needed the procedure. Only problem was that i wasn't having issues with my bad knee at the time. --------------------------------------------------------------- Because of my bad knee, I have had difficulty walking for a few years now. It has been painful just to walk around the block. But Dr. Holland kept advising me to wait to have a knee replacement. After the arm fiasco, I went to another orthopedic doctor for another opinion on my knee. It has now been six months since I had knee replacement surgery and I am pleased to say I can walk places now without limping or pain. read more

I want to write a review for Dr. Holland. The very first time I saw Dr. Holland, was back in 2013 or 2014, I don't quite remember. And it was about my should and rotator cuff tear. He was recommended to me by my primary care doctor, Dr. Sheckter. I found him helpful and his diagnosis helped. Actually I saw him on that to break a tie. I had seen two doctors before one said to do a surgery and the other said no surgery. So Dr. Sheckter sent me to Dr. Holland to break the tie. And he voted for no surgery. I am glad I did not get a surgery. Because with continuous Physical therapy it healed and it became well. Now this time, I injured my knee doing a workout. I called to see him, he was on vacation and after he would be back, there is a month of wait. So I had to go to a different one in Kirkland. Dr. Holland is in the Seattle office. so I went to a different office of same facility but in Kirkland. Right away, he ordered x-ray. And he saw the images. And he said there is nothing wrong and the joints are apart from each other and there is a small point that shows arthritis, just physical therapy. But the pain did not go away. he also said that if the pain did not go away, come back for MRI. And I did go back for MRI. When I went back to see the result of MRI. He looked at the report and he said Oh, the meniscus is torn, and there are some stress fracture and you just have to live with it and come back for cortisone shot if you have to. And you are too young to get a surgery. Now, I had already an appointment with Dr. Holland but that was a month of wait. I kept on going to my PT. When my appointment time came with Dr. Holland, I could not believe how good he was. First of all since these two offices, that is the Kirkland and Seattle ones are the same, they share the same information and results. And he looked at the image of MRI and without reading the report of the MRI, he was able to tell me what to do and what the problem was. I was amazed with his expertise and knowledge whereas the other doctor, could not say anything from the picture. I don't want to mention the doctor's name in the Kirkland office because it is bad for him. But I want to recommend Dr. Holland big time. he even wrote the direction for my PT that what kind of exercise she has to focus on. I was just so amazed! Kudos to Dr. Holland. I think Swedish or OPA Ortho is so lucky to have him. read more

Dr Holland did 4 of my knee surgeries. They all turned out great and he was wonderful to work with.

After 2 years of denial, and 8 months of physical therapy, it became obvious that only surgery would fix my rotator cuff. My search brought me to Dr. Lawrence Holland, one of the best medical choices I have ever made. He has a fantastic ability to connect with the patient. He listened, consulted with the imaging results, and pinpointed the needed correction. I was completely satisfied with his explanation and plan for surgery. Dr. Holland is also an engineer, and it showed during the surgery. I received a copy of the narrated arthroscopic surgery. His precision and efficiency paid off for me. Partly due to the "pre-hab" therapy, and mostly due to Dr. Holland's skills, my recovery went super fast. I was out of the sling in 6 days (with his blessings), and back at the gym the following week, albeit with a few cautions. I wish I had made the choice to have him fix me much sooner! I referred my wife for a similar surgery, and her results (for a much more complex surgery) have been just as stellar. Thanks Doc! read more

I went to see Dr. Holland about pain in my knees that I have had for a long time. Like other reviewers, I was impressed by his credentials, and I was hopeful that he could help me. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. He took my medical history, did an exam, explained my injury, and then told me that I should learn to live with my condition (chronic knee pain) the rest of my life. He also told me to stay away from the activities that I love to do. As you can imagine, I was extremely disappointed. I was expecting him to go over my treatment options instead of just telling me to deal with it. (I spent an hour crying in the hospital parking lot because I was so upset that there was no help for me, and I thought I would have to deal with my pain for the rest of my life). It wasn't what he said, but it was the delivery. I didn't feel like he cared about my problem, and he wasn't apologetic. I felt like he was trying to get me out and move on to the next patient because my treatment/surgery wasn't one he was interested in doing. If there truly is no hope for me, it would help if he explained why he didn't recommend moving forward with those treatments or procedures. If he wasn't interested in performing them, perhaps he could have referred me to another doctor who would? In his defense, he briefly spoke of possible treatment options, but it was clear that he had no interest in performing them. If I wanted to spend the next 50 or 60 years in pain, I wouldn't have come to see him for help. Also, he wasn't personable as the other reviewers described him. Maybe I saw him on a bad day? Maybe my experience would have been completely different if I needed a procedure that he prefers doing? Maybe he's an excellent surgeon, but I think it's important to feel comfortable with the person who may be performing surgery on you. On a positive note, when I finally stopped crying, and made it back home, I found a great doctor who was actually willing to help me. My new doctor was very warm and friendly, spent a lot of time talking to me, and made me feel completely at ease. He did additional tests, and came up with a detailed plan (ranging from more conservative treatments to surgery) that we can take to get me some relief. It turns out that there is hope after all, my condition is very treatable, and I may not have to deal with this forever. Whether his plan works or not, at least I know that my new doctor is doing everything he possibly can to help me. read more

Yes, I also tore my ACL in 1980 when surgery meant deconstructing the entire knee. I hobbled along, my knee locking and popping, until 1996 when Dr. Holland cleaned it up with arthroscopic surgery. At the time he advised against ACL surgery and in fact, the knee was as good as new for many, many years. So, now 32+ years after the injury I am in need of a total knee replacement and am so glad he will be doing it. Two years ago he did the TKR surgery on my partner and it went extremely well. I have worked with him for 16 years and he doesn't recommend surgery unless it's needed. An added plus, he is kind and personable. I highly recommend him. read more

TOP DOC for sure ! I am so very happy with the whole process of pre-surgery, knee replacement, post surgery, etc that this outstanding doctor set up for me, at Swedish Ortho. Takes a while to get on schedule with Dr Holland, but well worth it! Could not have had a better , caring, knowledgeable surgeon! Looking forward to the other knee being replaced, in April 2014. NO fear whatsoever, knowing that he is so very caring, concerned that everything goes Perfect! I would give him 11 Stars.! I am a 70+ year old woman and it takes a lot to impress me. I would send my precious 94yr old mother to him, if she needed surgery. I did a lot of research to find the perfect doctor and hospital. Dr. Holland comes across as very professional in the beginning, but after 2 yrs of going to him to prep for surgery, when the time came, he flipped the script and became a TOTAL and complete arrogant jerk. After reading some of the other reviews here and having had the same experiences as others, I can't help but wonder if he really does know how to actually perform a surgery. He seems to like to turf people when it comes time for surgery. Or is it that if he thinks you are not worth his time, he just becomes a jerk. I am really disappointed and shock at the way he and his assist Gretchen talked to me. Rude for NO reason, totally caught me by surprise. After 2 yrs of seeing him with nothing but great things to say about him up until this time, I am speechless. I am still at a loss as to what happened and why and where did all of the arrogance and rudeness come from all of a sudden. If he didn't want to do the surgery he could have said that two years prior. At the very least he could have given a referral to another provider, instead of saying I probably would not be able to find any one else to perform the knee surgery as though he is the only surgeon in town. After which he sent a letter referencing things that were never discussed and even reference another physician that I haven't seen in over 25yrs!!! Why would he be discussing ME with this person. He knows NOTHING about me. And Karyn, it wasn't because you are a white female, that is not the case here. I think it's probably because you don't present to come from the upper social class, which would make you a waste of his time. My opinion. Dr. Holland has no idea how far the "word of mouth" can go or who a person may know in this life. It's a bit late, however time to write this review since I keep praising Dr Holland's work whenever I come across someone who I chat with that recently has a torn acl or meniscus. About 2.5 years ago - I tore my ACL and some meniscus while trying to closely track counter every move from an opponent while playing indoor soccer at StarFire in Renton. Indoor tracks are not forgiving and neither are old knees that you overextend with 2 times your body weight. It hurt like hell for about 4 days and when I tried to play again after 2 weeks of rest - my knee had no stability and kept popping. After consultation with Dr. Holland, I opted for doner tissue to replace my ACL. I highly recommend doner tissue as you heal so much faster and can get a much stronger ACL (I have an Achilles cord now where my ACL was- in my right knee). Previously, I actually had another surgeon lined up - who was too impatient to answer all my questions of concern. A friend who had their ACL replaced by Dr Holland kept raving about the outcome and I thought that was a good first start. After meeting Dr. Holland and going thru a lot of questions and options we scheduled the surgery August 15, 2008. I was concerned about the pin sticking out and showing on the knee - similar to someone I knew who had a similar surgery by another surgeon. I opted to be knocked out and not watch the surgery - just see it on video after at home. Without a doubt - my right knee now is 100% and even stronger than my left knee. With the doner tissue - I was able to slowly walk into Dr. Holland's office (wearing the brace) exactly one week after the surgery. It ached however not unbearably. My knee healed pretty fast and there is no outside evidence of any pin and only one little tiny 1/2 pencil red scar that shows I had surgery. The aching goes on for about 3 months - then about the 6th month your knee makes this crunchy sound when you bend it. I was concerned and went to see Dr Holland. He clarified that this is from the doner ligament building up with your body adding to it and the crunchy sound/feel if from the new ligament(ACL) finding it's seating inside the hole in your bone where the ACL is passed thru. Sure enough - about the 8th or 9th month the crunchy sound goes away. There was still some dull aching for about a year and I could not fully do a full knee squat on one knee confidently till then - however now it's like a brand new and even hardcore bike riding or chasing my dog around the couch is like old times with no difference that before the break. Couple of recommendations from my experience: 1. Go for the doner tissue - less pain - faster healing - stronger ligament options. 2. Exercise 2 months before the operation to get your leg muscles strong. - makes quicker recovery 3. Push yourself during therapy right after the operation. It hurts like hell - however you will have full range of motion with your knees after if you do this. 4. Take lots of Serrapeptase after the operation. I don't know if this was the magic or not - however I have a mosquito bite dot for a scar. Serrapeptase supposedly eats up scar tissue. 5. A friend did Reki on me for 4 sessions. My leg would feel like it was on fire. I don't know if this was the magic or not either - however I did heal exceptionally fast as per Dr. Holland. 6. Go to Dr Holland for your surgery. He lined things up so well and did such fine work - I am not noticing any kind of ache or weakness or strangeness with my operated on knee. It's like there never was an operation there - only proof I have is the video and a copy of the fees- and of course the old brace in the closet. That's it. Hope you don't need knee surgery - however if you do - Seattle has some great docs for fixing you up - Dr. Holland being one that I highly recommend. read more

Dr. Holland did my ACL repair in 1999. Everything went very well. I was back to normal in about 9 mos. He saved my career as a firefighter, and I got another 10 years of basketball as well. I highly recommend Dr. Holland. read more

I have had four shoulder surgeries so far and while the topic is not an easy one to deal with, I have always felt so comfortable with Dr. Holland. I was initially injured when I was 16 and almost immediately had a failed surgery to fix the problem. I moved on to a D1 college swimming program and had surgery with the resident shoulder ortho there; the problem was only made worse. Doctors recommended a shoulder replacement, but at the age of 19 I wasn't ready. I left school, stopped swimming and crossed paths with Dr. Holland a few years later after the instability had effected my daily life. I have always wanted my information up front and very forward, which he does; injuries shouldn't be sugar coated. I wanted to know exactly what his thoughts and plans were, and thats exactly what I heard. He took the time to call my previous surgeons and assisting doctors, read through post-op notes and devised a plan. Since he wasn't covered by my insurance, he and his office staff went out of there way to make sure as much of the surgery was covered. He understood it was a tough decision for me, but assured me I would swim again. Which I did! Rehab wasn't easy, but he oversaw every step. When I needed a fourth surgery, Dr Holland and his team were amazing. He wouldn't ever do surgery if he didn't see how it would positively impact a patients life and has a great understanding of the joints. I have recommended a number of people to see him at different times and they are all thankful for his knowledge and expertise. I still talk to him whenever I am having issues or am scared that I have hurt it, and he always takes the time to look at whatever notes or MRI's I send his way - he truly cares about his patients and his work. Joints and surgeries are difficult things to manage, but his reassurance and dedication to making me comfortable and able to do things again was a life changer! read more
