Love Lawrence JCC - one of my favorite pools of all time!!! They always have longer lanes open which is a dream to me. The pool is kept at a very nice temperature. It took me no time at all to work back up to 1 hour straight of laps and I don't get too hot or cold - a godsend!! Pool is pretty clean although I do see some random stuff at the bottom sometimes lol but that's a given. A lot of kids swim here and this is the one bit of downside - the swim team reserves the pool from 3-6 every weekday. It's not great timing for those who want to hop in the pool directly after work and it always kinda sucks to swim after an entire team for quality purposes. I've just started coming in the mornings instead when I can make it out, unfortunately I got sick recently (probably from swimming here tbh even though it is very clean) so it's been a couple of weeks. Writing this to encourage myself to go back :) Also want to try swimming with the Masters tem someday! I'm Jewish but there are plenty of non-Jews that come here. So don't let that stop you. Staff is mostly very friendly and so are the other gym goers. It's nice that they have a cafe and multiple places to eat inside although I haven't tried those yet. The workout room is really nice. Equipment is clean and modern, 1 squat rack, wall mounted punching bag. It hasn't been crowded every time I've gone in there, even at peak times. I always get a lane to myself in the pool too. Women's locker room is very nice, can't speak for the men's obvs but it was recently closed for a bit. So hopefully everything is okay there. Showers are nice and soap is provided. I attended a bridge tournament here. Seems like a VERY busy facility, with lots of various activities going on, appealing to all ages, from pre-school to senior. Parking can be a severe challenge, as the front lot was full at 8:55am, and I ultimately parked in the office building parking lot across the street @$14/day. Later, I found out that there additional parking at the BACK of the building....NO SIGNAGE for visitors. Cafe on-site. read more

I love JCC. They have both recreational (basketball court, gym, pool) and cultural (theater and library) facilities. They even have a cafe! Not sure about the hours of the cafe, probably whenever I am not there cos I never see them open. Their gym is decent, clean and sanitized. Bigger than the one in your clubhouse but smaller than 24-hour fitness. No kettle bells :-( The best part is the Olympic sized heated pool! I can't stand tiny teeny pools. read more

The JCC is conveniently located within walking distance from my 9-5, so I'm fortunate to be able to go there nearly everyday. When a few people at work wished me a Happy Chanukah last December I was baffled. Then I realized all of my time spent at the JCC had given everyone at work the impression that I'm Jewish! Definitely not a bad stereotype in my opinion. I'll happy accept gifts of latkes, gelt and Chanukah presents! Here are my favorite things about the JCC: *WELCOME It's open to the general public. You don't have to be Jewish or a Member to join in most of the fun! Memberships are really affordable, especially for all you "young professionals" out there. Many community activities are free, or for a reduced cost. *SPORTS COMPLEX Remember Average Joe's, the small community gym that Vince Vaughn's character owns in the movie Dodgeball? The same spirit of friendliness, camaraderie and funny banter is what you find at the JCC's Qualcomm Sports and Fitness Complex. It has a small, community-gym feel but with the greatest equipment around. All the cardio machines have their own flatscreen TVs and expanded cable! Just bring your earbuds, plug them into your very own remote and you can watch and listen to whatever you want! I myself prefer to catch up on Paula Deen's show on the Food Network or even rock out with Starbuck on Battlestar Galactica reruns on SyFy when I work out. In January things get crazy when people set their New Year's resolutions but by the third week the gym has thinned out and just the regulars are around. And if you start coming here pretty frequently on the same schedule, you'll see the same people every time. I love my gym family! It's really nice to have a group of friends who all care about health catch up with you while you lift freeweights or even when you're 4-miles in on the treadmill. Sometimes I even get hit up when I work out on my lunch hour by polite Grandma's who want to hook me up with their handsome, Dr. Grandson So-and-So. While I'm married and have to politely turn down their matchmaking attempts, this may be a winning strategy for some of you singletons out there who are on the lookout for a nice Jewish Doctor! (PS - towels are not provided, so bring your own or rent one for $1) *CLASSES Pilates, yoga, hip-hop, spin, the JCC has pretty much everything including Krav Maga, a martial arts discipline practiced by the Israeli armed forces. You don't have to be a member to purchase a class card, and can pick and chose which classes you want to take without committing to a series of classes. My favorite Pilates classes are Pilates on the Ball with Mikki and Mat Pilates with Scott. Both are exceptionally knowledgeable professionals that know how to get you a great core workout! Spin class with Bryant is an exceptional, fun, upbeat experience. He often hosts class outside on sunny days (under a nice tarp!) and often plays really cool music and takes the group on a 'vacation,' for example he played Ibrahim Ferrer and we went to Cuba one sunny afternoon. "Look! Here comes a waiter with some Mojitos!" *POOL PARTY The pool at the JCC is amazing and on the weekends is nearly empty (EXCEPT when there's a swim meet or it's extra hot outside!). It's pretty nice showing up on a Sunday afternoon and having your own, private, Olympic-sized swimming pool! *BOOK FAIR The JCC hosts an awesome book fair once a year where you can attend some exceptional readings, meet some great authors and get some used books on the cheap (50 cents for small paperbacks, $1 for large paperbacks and $2 for hardcovers). They also have a silent auction with many rare items that are sold for far less than they are worth. What a deal! *PITLUCK CAFÉ A small, Jewish deli with many healthy (and not so healthy) snacks and lunches. They have a great deal on Lox & Bagels and every Friday sell fresh-from-the-oven Challah Bread that will rock your world! *GOTTHELF ART GALLERY 1,000 square foot space that features quality exhibits. My most recent fave was the "Jews Rock" photography exhibit of Jewish Rockstars. Surprises included Bob Dylan and Gene Simmons of Kiss! There's so much to love about the JCC. I didn't even mention a lot of their other features, a Library, Preschool, Singles Events (where one of my girls DID meet the Jewish Doctor of her dreams!) and the Hafner Auditorium programs and the Film Festival. Jewish?! I'm not Jewish! Can I still come here? At first I was a little hesitant to come here just because it's a Jewish Community Center. My employer offers free membership to this place with our work badge. Which is super cool because I don't have to pay for gym membership/services... but Jewish? Is this place for Jewish people only? NO! I don't even think 50% of the people who come here are Jewish. CLASSES: Take advantage of the free ones (with membership). It's pretty good! I take the ab blast with some of my coworkers, and it's always a good ab work out. I'm going to try the Zumba with my friends but it looked intense. GYM: Small, but good for the basics especially cardio. All machines have TVs. PARKING: Sucks, one of the bad things. Front parking or back parking or street parking. It gets packed around 5-6pm. Hard to find when you are rushing after work for a class. STAFF: Really friendly. Always asks you how was your workout. You see them working out to. Very helpful. PEOPLE: Variety of people and varies in age. Sometimes I go and it's all a younger crowd, and other time, old people with horrible breathes. But a good variety of people. As long as my employer gives us free membership to the JCC, I'm here every day after work! read more

I'm reviewing this from a facility standpoint (my non profit group meets here). I love the way that the building is well organized and marked and the staff is very friendly and supportive. They are very accommodating and make sure that everything is in place to make sure we were comfortable. The security team keeps traffic moving for big events. The only downside I've encountered so far is parking. While there are two parking lots (front and back), they fill up fast with all the constant activities. You'll have to drive the entire length to see if there are any available. Usually the front goes first, so it might be worthwhile to start in the back lot. read more

As a educator, please do not place your student (s) into this program. All Day @the J , Is putting each student at risk. There is unqualified staff overseeing students. The center does not have fingerprint clearance for any of the staff. There is unqualified staff diagnosing and red flagging students! They do not check CPR/First aid validation.nor is there a security background check on any of their leaders. The jcc run a "Credit check" on their employees to make sure they're not going to steal from them. They have absolutely no regard for the health or safety of the students in their care. read more

Overall, this gym is great to play basketball, run on treadmills, and do weight lifting. First off is the basketball court where I am most of the time when I come to the JCC. It's fun to play with my coworkers and others when the court is open, usually after work and Saturday mornings. The court gets dusty pretty frequently, so have good shoes if you play. Also, the rims and backboard are a little bit old but its O.K. The workout gym is on the small size, and could have more of a selection of machine assisted weights. Overall, I like this place a lot and the staff is friendly and helpful. read more

Doesn't look like much as you walk by. And it isn't. Small cramped gym. Broken and outdated equipment. Bathroom doors are open exposing everyone using the restroom inside. Absolutely no privacy. Incredibly overpriced gym with a lack of usable equipment. Their policy is you must carry an identification card on you at all times. Treated like a criminal. I'll start with the positives: 1) Membership is worth it to me for the fitness center alone. The price is pretty reasonable and the fitness center is small but nice. It isn't an intimidating place and it usually isn't difficult to get access to the equipment I want to use. 2) There are occassionally interesting Jewish cultural events, though not as many as one would expect for a Jewish Community Center. Now the negatives: 1) Security protocols are dangerously flawed. I feel that it is truly a disaster waiting to happen. The "security" is really just security theater. I don't want to get into the specific weaknesses because I am truly afraid that someone might exploit them, but I have brought these issues up repeatedly with security staff, the head of security, and the CEO of Lawrence Family JCC and have never received a legitimate response and, far worse, no action has been taken to address the serious issues. It seems that they are just waiting for a disaster to happen before taking the issue seriously. This is truly irresponsible and disturbing for a Jewish institution in the current climate we are living in. 2) Fitness/recreation events that I sign up for and show up for are regularly cancelled without any prior notice. We only find out after we take time out of our schedules, drive to the JCC, and wait around. This demonstrates incompetence and a lack of respect for members. 3) The tennis courts can only be reserved 24 hours or less in advance, which makes coordination with other players and appropriate scheduling nearly impossible. I make arrangements with others a week in advance to play at a specific time that fits all of our schedules, and then it turns out that I can't get a court when I call exactly 24 hours in advance because other people called a half hour earlier to reserve the courts a half hour before the time I have arranged with friends to play. It is also unacceptable that 2 of the 4 courts are permanently rented to a for-profit tennis lesson company, and the employees of that company also will not leave me alone after I have made it very clear that I am not interested in their services. 4) The Lawrence Family JCC's computer system for reserving tickets for events routinely does not work, saying that events are sold out when they are nowhere near sold out. I have to go to Guest Services to do what I should be able to do online. Overall, the Lawrence Family JCC is incompetently run. An institution with such strong funding and active membership should be doing so much better. Two stars is extremely generous, but the fitness center compels me to give it more than the minimum one star. read more

My experiene with the Jewish Community Center (JCC for short, if you didn't know, now you do!) is almost entirely with the fitness center. The Qualcomm Sports, Fitness & Aquatics Complex is located at the JCC, even though the name of the place might make you think otherwise. There's a small but very well-equipped fitness center there with my favorite piece of cardio equipment ever -- the Precor AMT. The fitness center is well-ventilated, bright and unpretentious. There's an Olympic-size pool off of the locker rooms that is the best I can find in the area. Fitness center rates are reasonable. So-called "young professionals" like me pay something like $32 a month. If you don't mind nutty Zionists too much, this is the place to be. read more

I joined the JCC to swim laps in the outdoor pool and to use the stationary bicycle in the gym. I chose the JCC because it has a very family-friendly atmosphere, and I feel comfortable there amongst the children, the seniors, and the athletes. It's a great mix of people. I also enjoy the fact that it's possible to find a less crowded time to swim laps. In the past I have tried other pools which didn't really have any less crowded times. There are always a few lanes for members only to swim laps. The pool is heated, although it's October now and the air is slowly getting cooler. There is a kiddie pool as well, and I used one of my guest passes for my granddaughter once. She enjoyed splashing in the warm kiddie pool. I was only given a small number of free guest passes. After that I will have to pay $15 a day for my guests. The membership office gave me a fair deal for my membership price. Ask if you are eligible for any discounts. The JCC is open to anybody who wants to sign up for a membership. The showers don't have as much water pressure as my shower at home. So I don't use their showers very often. They are ok. The locker room and bathrooms can be a little bit wet and messy, but I can live with that. I like the sauna, as it's nice to warm up after a swim on a cool day. The JCC also offers a variety of classes for children, teens, and adults. I haven't tried the classes yet. Staff is always friendly and helpful. There is also a Peet's coffee on site. (-; Parking can be a challenge but I usually get a spot since I like to go when it's slower if possible. read more

This place is sooo nice. Also cheaper than 24 hour fitness where we used to go. They offer so many classes and also have a ton of other family oriented programs. It's immaculately kept and the staff are so nice. The gym is on the small side, but they have everything you need, and I personally have never seen it crowded. It hasn't been crowded at the pool either when we go (although busy)but I'm usually there before or after work. The pool is amazing. Big lanes, clean, heated. We just love it here. Edit: I was just reading other comments...which perplexed me! Someone mentioned the showers in the comments below mine not being good, the showers are amazing! Super clean, they have great water pressure and even have body soap/shampoo if you forgot yours. Maybe they have updated them? My daughter and I are always like ahh! I love the showers! Its really nice that they're private also! You can't see through the shower door! We've been coming here for approx 6 months. (My daughter and I) also I've never had a parking issue the back lot is usually pretty empty but again, I'm there either before or after normal working hours. read more

This review is for the pool only since it's the only thing I've used at this facility. The pool is conveniently located close to my work. The hours are reasonable since I only swim early in the morning. I believe on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Fridays the lanes are 50 meters while on other days they are 25 meters. The facility is clean and the people are really nice and accommodating. I recommend the pool to all my swim buddies and to you. read more

Don't let the name "Jewish Community Center" make you feel sheepish. It's a community center that happens to have been founded by Jewish patrons, that's all, and all are welcome at this, the greatest community resource in UTC !! This place is essentially very similar to a YMCA if that makes you feel more comfortable about it. The people and groups that operate here have been nothing but WONDERFUL to us for the past 8 years of our lives. We started at the Nierman preschool and our kids learned a ton (including finishing our potty training for us in ~4 weeks), and later on our kids swam for the Barracudas beginner's swim team, and now we swim for the NCA Swim Team which is the most successful team in the county, based at the JCC. We have also used the gym and there are many summer sports programs for kids at the JCC, too. The place is so successful that everyone wants to come here, hence, the parking lot is always overcrowded and the spaces have been painted to be as small as possible. This is the only bad thing I can say about the JCC, so I am detecting one tenth of one star from my rating !! Well done !!! read more

I got an update that JCC has replied to my review. I checked my emails with JCC and found out that I made a TYPO on the coach's name, who is Jake not Jack. Except this, anything else of my review remains the same. We had quite a high expectation for the swimming aquatics before we started our first swimming lesson there. However, the ridiculous horrible discrimination we suffered during our "first class" time (to be precise, the scheduled class never has the chance to occur) disappointed us hugely. Still, until today I couldn't believe the management and customer service quality at JCC are so poor and ugly. Note--the one Star is given to the swimming pool facility itself. The aquatic coach and management doesn't deserve any star. At the end of July, I was informed by JCC aquatic office that my son would be scheduled a swimming class every Mon/Wed starting from the month August. I am a cautious person so before we went to the class, I double checked with the office and front desk both to make sure that my son got a class scheduled and was told that he was assigned to a coach named Jack Hormes (yes they showed me each coach's written schedule and I saw my son's name was under Coach Jack at 5:45pm each Mon/Wed). So far everything seems good, right? Then the boom comes in---On our first day at JCC class, we waited at the JCC swimming area from 5:30-6:10pm for around 40 min without being taken care of. Did we see Coach Jack while we were waiting for the class? Yes! He was standing in the pool water during the whole time doing something else. However, he chose to IGNORE me and my 6-yr old son, from the very beginning to the end, by not talking to us even for a second! Then how we communicate? How did I know that standing-in-water guy was Coach Jack? That's the funny part of the story. As I said, Coach Jack arrogantly didn't speak any word with us from the beginning to the end, pretending that we were air. Our communication was helped by another female coach I guess she might be Jack's colleague. Jack denied that he had any class scheduled at 5:45pm that day and he had no student whose name was my son's name. Shocked. Rude. But then on the pool deck we found his written schedule with my son's name and class time on that sheet. So we pointed this sheet in front of him and asked again if there was any misunderstanding, but very surprisingly, Jack still denied again by stating no 5:45 class for my son. So shocked. So rude. A very naked ugly discrimination. I want to warn all swimming kids' parents--do not send your kids to the JCC swimming class, unless you don't care about the horrible rudeness you and your child would experience. read more

Nice blue tennis courts, easy parking, but there are only 4 courts, and you have to reserve them in advance. The first two courts closest to the entry gate are reserved for teaching, so basically you are vying for 2 courts with everyone else who lives in the neighborhood. Busy on a sunny Saturday morning. Excellent courts, but who plays tennis for just an hour? (The 3 stars is only for the tennis courts-- I have no experience with anything else the JCC has to offer here.) read more

This is a review on the extracurricular leagues that the JCC puts together. I play softball on the Tuesday night co-ed league. The fields are well kept and the umpire is consistent. The fees are good and were actually lowered this season. The only thing is that not a lot of people know that the JCC sponsors these and allows pretty much anyone with the funds and who follows the rules to play. If there were more teams it would be a lot more competitve. Right now its just for fun. ALso-they stopped letting us drink beer on the bleachers. It's probably best since we are right next to a police station LOL! read more

Like Mel J. below, I use this mainly for swimming and the pool is quite clean. It's sad though that the women's showers aren't even strong enough for a good shampoo and rinse, as a guest informed me. Men's don't seem to be as weak, however, and the steam room is finally working. Floors in shower and locker areas are not swabbed down every couple of hours, so bring protective thongs. Random hair, dust in the corners, etc, is pretty normal in this heavily used facility. read more

I had a membership here for about a year, although I only took advantage of the free fitness classes, which were great. The instructors were very good. After a few times you start recognizing the same people in the classes The gym facilities were nice, although it could get a bit crowded at peak times. The JCC always seemed hopping with events, whether it was swim classes or basketball practice or yoga classes. I don't know if I would pay extra for classes when there are a good number that are offered for free but I found the membership to be a good value. The whole center does close for Jewish holidays though, so make sure to check their calendar before heading over. read more

It feels weird writing a review for the JCC, but I live nearby and find myself here very often (for purely secular reasons), so a review seems in order. The JCC is really a superb space. It's bright, airy, modern, and really built to suit a large and diverse community. (A big thank you to the high-profile Jewish philanthropists that made this place possible.) When it comes to the facilities, the only drawbacks are the small-ish parking lots. During the daytime, both the front and back lots are usually packed. I end up parking on the street over on Eastgate Mall and then walking over. There's a huge array of activities that go on here. I've come here for art exhibits (in the gallery off the main lobby), lectures (in the auditorium), and book signings (in the 2nd floor library). The JCC also holds frequent book fairs with a mix of Jewish and secular-themed literature. These books are tough to find in regular bookstores. The JCC has outstanding fitness center facilities, if those are what you're looking for. It features lots of cardio equipment, but I think the highlight is the superb Olympic-sized swimming pool. The membership rates here are better than comparable rates at regular gyms. There are lots of organized activities and classes for men, women, kids, families, singles, and any other subgroup of humanity (Jewish or otherwise) that wanders in. Definitely check out the JCC! read more

I intended on being a part of the 8th Annual Yom Limmud, San Diego's Community Day of Learning, as I usually do. I always buy the tickets from the box office and this year I presented $108.00 (ticket price is $38.00). I had a very old, sometime from the 80's, $100 bill and less than one second after I slid it under the window the woman in the box office, who would later claim she wast the, "manager", said, "I have never seen something like that before". At that point it didn't seem odd to hear that as this bill minimally resembles the bills of the '00's. She took the bill and immediately stepped away from the window and a out of my sight-this was odd. I took 2 steps to my left and I could see her scrutinizing the bill. She then used the marker that is designed to authenticate currency, and it did. She then told me, "Hold on. I have to check this out". I let her know that is not a problem but that I would either need to carry the bill where she was going or to at least wait there with the bill while she gets whatever she needs to confirm her choice. Now I started feeling a little weird as she held the bill against light and you can clearly see the strip and she marked it. She walked out the door to a small hallway near us and I asked her for the bill when she said, "I am just going to bring this upstairs to check it. I am the manager". I told her that I will be assisting her and she told me that I could not. Now things are starting to get extremely weird. She wants to walk away with someones $100 bill??? I "can't go with her"?? What possible reason would she have for not allowing me to escort her? This is very weird and with my 15+ years in restaurant and retail management I have never seen, or heard, of any kind of situation even remotely close to this. I explained to her that the bill would not leave my site and I could go elsewhere to make change for it if that would suffice but in no way, shape, or form would that bill leave my sight and then I asked for it back-AGAIN! She handed it to me and I asked what she thought made it seem strange other than the obvious fact that she claimed she had never seen one like this before and she pointed to a stain that was on the bill. I laughed and said, "Well you chose not to accept it so now I have to go elsewhere but that's cool". See what was really odd was her statement that she had never seen anything like it before. I know she was very close to my age and I find it extremely unlikely that she has not seen one like that as that's how they were made. LOL I had proof in my hand LOL. In any case she was an absolute moron and started the whole situation off with a lie. I have had my hands on dozens of these as I was in my late teens and early 20's through the 80's. I also got one of these 2 years ago. What was worse than anything is that she had the courage to tell me she was going somewhere I couldn't with my money. If she had walked away with it I was going to dial 911 and not do another thing until the police got there. This idiot almost got arrested for theft. In my 15+ years of restaurant and retail management I have never, under any circumstances, been told I have the liberty of taking a customer's money ANYWHERE where they are not welcomed!! Nothing written or verbal has ever suggested this and her actions were overly shady! read more

I love this place. The gym is clean and spacious, the staff there is awesome, there is every one from sweet old ladies to highschool kids traing for 2adays, but no intimidating meat heads. The pool is great and nothing beats seeing the cutest little preschoolers stroll in dragging towels and sucking thumbs. BUT they are way away from the lap pool, so they dont interfere. Locker rrooms are nice too. In addition to a gym, they are also an amazing center for communty learning and arts! A library- a real one, classes, film screenings, lectures, an art gallery, music concerts and they have a really robust theatre and dance school for my kids! Kids can start in preschool and stay engaged all the way through college and into there professional lives. I also like the fact that even though it is called a jcc, it does not feel like a religious center where everyone is the same. There are people of all walks off life, jewish and not, from every country you can think of. The staff there introduced me to my husband! And i have heard several similar stories like mine... So in that respect, some do follow the tradition of jewish match making! I highly recommend you do a trial membership, attend some of the arts events, send your kids, jewish or not to summer camps, and then if you are comfy, join a commitee! I used to go here to swim because they had cheap passes (10 days for $100) and because they had a great coach running masters on Sundays. However, they fired my favorite coach for literally no reason. First they took her off of coaching. Unfortunately, none of the other coaches have anywhere near the technical understanding that my favorite coach had. They also lacked the general swim experience and understanding to help me when I needed it. With the cost rising (10 for $100 is no longer available) and other benefits diminishing (masters coaches are not as good), I have been forced to relocate. read more

I play soccer on the small fields here. The fields are in pretty good shape, but the parking situation in front of the gym area sucks. So many spots are blocked off for apparently no reason. For the parking annoyance, three stars. read more

I've been swimming here every day for the last 15 years. They have great facilities and I really enjoy taking their music and opera appreciation classes. I would high recommend the JCC to anyone looking for a well rounded recreation center. read more

They have a really nice facility here, Olympic sized pools, basketball courts, tennis courts, softball fields, etc. The staff here are pretty darn nice too. I guess the best comparison would be the YMCA, but the JCC is much better. I guess the only drawback are some of the snotty soccer moms that are around, but hey, can't do much about them can we? read more

This review is for the tennis courts only. The JCC has 4 tennis courts with a blue surface that are well maintained. They are swept and clean, no leaves, dirt, pebbles, nor tennis ball lint. Fences separate each of the courts to provide barriers against errant balls. There are also a couple of water coolers on the courts, a nice bonus on hot days when you're parched and have gone through your whole water bottle. read more

I only come here because my company has a corporate membership to the gym, so this review is only about the gym and fitness classes. This place is clean, very modern and people are respectful of each other. I hate 24 Hour Fitness because they all smell and I feel like I'm going to contract a bacterial infection. I think it was about 2 years ago that they actually replaced ALL their equipment in the gym. Now how cool is that? I mainly went for the indoor cycling classes. They have multiple instructors and depended on who you get, it's a hit or miss. At least, they typically teach on the same day. There is an older gentleman that is fantastic for cycling. He really helps you visualize to "get over the mountain." He class always filled up quick. There was a Thursday guy (last year) that was also great - more intense and more about the workout but damn, you felt good afterwards. The only negative is the funky hours around the Jewish holidays. You do need to keep an eye on that - but they also do post closures clearly on the doors. Would I pay for a membership here if I didn't get it through my company? I'm not sure how much it is, but I probably would, if I had to choose this place over 24 hour. read more
