I had my 8yo in camps several times with YMCA. He attended there sports camp and they called me saying he was hit by a baseball in the face. The councilor said they did not provide helmets but did to the other children after the incident. When I arrived my child had a massive swelling on his forehead and I had to rush him to the Er. The councilor said they accept full responsibility. Several weeks later I got the bill and contacted them for payment and Brittney Lingenfelter, Program Director replied this: Good Morning Michael, Thank you for reaching out. Again, we hope Skylar is feeling better and recovering well. Please note that the YMCA does not carry participant medical liability insurance. I wrote her back several times with question over the next several week and she has ignored every message with no reply. Aquatics director Kimberly Sultz should be fired. While at a swim meet my 80 year old father who is handicapped and has trouble walking was trying to watch his grandson at the swim meet. I walked around from the main entrance to let him in at a door that I had watched others use. As he stood at the other side of the door I was about to open so he could be let in, Kimberly refused to allow him in the door and said he needed to walk around to the main entrance. He can't walk the distance she told him to and, rather than allowing it, she smirked and said he needs to go in the same door everyone else does. Clearly the handicapped parking next to this door is there for a reason. She was smug and shouldn't be in that role. I hope her supervisor sees this and contacts me. This is a great facility. Staff is welcoming and service driven. Great management from the top. It's big with lots of gyms, workout studios and extensive fitness rooms. I go to the EGym which allows you to program your with a chip bracelet. They have personal trainers. This place has soccer fields. Skateboard parks, teen center, and a big camp schedule year around. Also tons of programs all week. The price to join is competitive. If you go there you'll see friends and meet new ones. I grew up with various Y'S and this one is excellent. read more

I'm extremely disappointed with the YMCA's Child Watch service. Nearly every week, it gets canceled with no prior notice--whether they claim it's slow or they simply decide to close. No control over arena soccer...you have 12 year olds playing 8 year olds, competitive vs rec because no one checks a thing. They hire refs that couldn't get jobs as Walmart greeters. I have been a member at the Ecke Y for over 30 years. I always feel so welcome whenever I arrive. Everyone is so friendly and approachable. I have done Pilates for years but I'm now super excited about the EGYM. I really enjoy seeing happy people of all ages enjoying all the Y has to offer, whether that is pickle ball, doing a puzzle, or the next Olympic champion learning to skate. My girls have attended the YMCA Summer Camps for several years and I couldn't be happier with the experience that they have had. When they attended the Gymnastics summer camp we noticed that they were learning new skills, faster during camp then during months of lessons at another gym. Even though we had to drive further, we moved our girls to the Ecke YMCA Gymnastics gym and were extremely satisfied with the growth and development of our girls. They loved it so much that we hosted several Birthday parties there and all the guests had a blast. The Coaches and staff are always attentive and helpful. This has been my go to place for my children's activities. From well organized birthday parties to swimming lessons to pee wee sports. The facility is so beautiful, the staff caring and the programs varied and professionally run. The prices are so reasonable and the facility welcoming. Their arena soccer program was honestly a joke. It was completely "demotivation" for kids, and I felt horrible for my son and his teammate throughout the season - He already refused playing it in the middle of season, but as showing his respect to his teammate, he completed it. They put a priority people's "buddy request" to please certain parents instead of balancing based on skill level. As a result, kids who already played together on competitive teams were often placed on the same team and dominated games. I raised concerns about this issue a few years ago, and things improved for a while; however, with new people now running the program, it has gone right back to the same situation gain. The summer soccer program was also disappointing. It seemed like high school kids were running things and bossing around the younger players. Zero positive experience. We never go back there ever, and don't recommend them to anyone. read more

I'm disappointed with this place after joining as a family. My kids and I like work out together. I have a 10, 11, 12, and 13 year old. Today was rainy we decided to head to the gym to be healthy. After about 40 minutes of working out with me supervising my kids, one of the gym police came over and accosted my kids telling them they have to have an adult supervising them. I came over immediately as I was 7 feet away with my 11 year old teaching him proper technique for lifting weights, the same program that Stampede and LCC use for his age. He then left. 10 minutes later he came over again as my kids were pressing 20 pound bars. They weren't goofing around and were serious about their exercising. All of them are in Club sports in Encinitas. This time he said kids who are 10-12 cannot use free weights even though it was my 13 year old using them. I am still looking through their website and don't see anything to that effect and didn't see anything when I signed up. Bu,t it is the way they do it that is disappointing and rude and after asking for the rule, he could not show me. This is the second time I or my family was 'accosted' and it is the way that you would expect from some the Y needs to teach their instructors or gym police how to communicate with patrons. As someone who donates to the Y and participates in many of their programs for many years, I was deeply concerned and left the gym angry due to this interaction. We've never been here but we have gone on a daddy daughter camping trip through this YMCA's outdoor adventure Coyote group. They go camping once a month for 10 months a year starting in August. I highly recommend this for all fathers and their daughters. Each moth they camp at a different location. My girl loves it. Many girls return year after year making many friends. I normally go to the Mission Valley YMCA but occasionally have to use this one, and man is this one tough in comparison. Super bro-y and the gym etiquette is all but nonexistent. Other Y's will have a gym attendant cleaning and keeping an eye on things but that's not a thing you see here, and good luck trying to work in a set at this gym. Lots of weight slamming and hogging of the racks here, which are scarce to begin with. There are a decent amount of classes available and solid parking, but the gym space feels old and dark. As a woman I don't love the vibes to be honest- other women will know what I mean hopefully. I much prefer my Mission Valley vibes and hope they can update things or improve the etiquette! read more

I have been a Y member for the last 8 years at this location. Unfortunately, the Encinitas YMCA has gone downhill in the last few years. Pros: - Safe environment to workout - Plenty of parking - Lots of staff at the front desk - Plenty of classes and daycare if you have kids Cons: - Staff at the front desk lack training and professionalism - Water leaks into the building during the rainy season ruining equipment (the building is literally falling apart) - $65 a month is overpriced (other gyms in the area charge $20-$40) - 2-3 Treadmills down at the same time - Most treadmills have loose belts which is a hazard - Broken mirrors - Lack of small weights - Some machines have rust - Stuffy and humid during the summer, it's actually cooler to workout outside - Lack of equipment, it took 8 years to get a hip thrust machine Suggestions: Fix your equipment or charge less for memberships. Reallocate the money that is wasted on overstaffing to fix the building and gym equipment. For a non-profit the amount of money charged is ridiculous especially for the low income community which a nonprofit should be targeting. How much money are you spending on decorating for the holiday galas, where is the donor money going? How much are the staff paid? Be transparent, spend the money more efficiently and show your members you care about their membership by improving the facilities. read more

Sad. I want to support the Y but it's a mess. The camps are a disaster. Can't get through to anyone. No one responds. Doesn't matter if it's an email to the director. When you have vouchers for camp, they still charge your card full price. You have to call them and ask to have it applied?! So enjoy being on hold. Again. Also you can't see your voucher in your account. Pretty sure I lost a ton of $$$ but who knows? The camps are decent so props to the counselors but the management, customer service and their online system are awful. As I write this, I have been on hold for 45 minutes since I was given a voucher (that I can't see in my account or was told about!) for camp rather than a refund without being asked. Oh nice, I was just hung up on while on hold with operator. read more

I joined this YMCA just over two years ago. Friendly staff and child care, right down the road. But then the Covid hit, and they still haven't recovered. My complaints are piling up, one after another. Still No childcare here, if your kid isn't at least two. The time for this rule to change is long overdue. And speaking of time, I'm telling you, this place is always closed. Check their hours often, before you get on the road. If this Y smells a holiday coming, the doors will not be open. Closed at 3pm on Saturdays? I think your watch is broken. When it's open, It's a great place to exercise, and it's always very clean. We unfortunately had to cancel our family membership due to feeling unsafe because of homeless people frequenting inside the facility as well as the parking lot. We brought up concerns to the staff and they said half of the parking lot was managed by the city and they had no control. As for the homeless issue a homeless man with extremely shredded pants that practically exposed his private parts was approaching several people in the lobby and loitering meanwhile the staff did nothing. Elder abuse and assult from other participants, with the staff providing only lip service and nothing to keep the assults from repeating. I am an old guy, trying to get my laps excercise in at the competiton pool. After months, I worked myself up to 70 laps, but very slow, taking 54 minutes. I usually come in 1:15 pm-ish, to avoid crowds and usually it isn't busy so I get my own lane. But today I was late, not getting in until 3:30 pm. At lap 46, suddenly, unexpectedly, I am struck by a young, strong, and much faster swimmer who had jumped into my lane without telling me - the rules are that anyone must at least informed the swimmer currently occupying a lane, but they didn't bother. The swimmer, colliding with me hurt my left arm so I stopped and floated to see what was going on. Without stopping, the young swimmer continues, turned at poolside, returned and struck me again while I was stopped. The young swimmer still did not stop, but exited from the pool at the other end and reported to the swim coach that I had struck them. The coach ordered me out of the pool, but would not let me talk to the other swimmer. Instead they directed me only to the aquatic coordinator, while the swimmer who collided with me twice, continued their swimming. The coordinator took a couple sentences of notes, chat with the other swimmer, interrupting their swim briefly, then returned to me saying that they would write an incident report, but I would probably not be able to see it, and nothing would be done. So watch out! If you an older person just trying to put in some excercise, this YMCA is a where you are ON YOUR OWN to stay out of the way of younger people doing whatever they want - good luck! I wanted to be able to swim, but now it looks like I cannot. read more

been a member in encinitas for over ten years. great classes, helpful staff around the facility. lots of elipticals, and bikes, and a good amount of machines and free weights. covid did hit them hard, especially because when there's no money coming in from canceled memberships, it's hard to get back up to full speed; but I still get my fitness work in among a great mix of age groups and personalities here. The Magdalena YMCA is where my husband and I go to to destress. We both enjoy swimming and the jacuzzi and sauna...I go to yoga classes and sometimes we use the workout equipment. They've got a spacious gymnasium, which contains an impressive amount of giant vinyl covered foam shaped to build forts (the kids love making obstacle courses out of them!). They've got two giant foam pits full of foam squares, and rope swings that you can grab onto and swing out over the pit, letting yourself drop down into the spongy awesomeness. There are several rope swings throughout the gymnasium, and the entire floor is completely covered in tumbling mats and soft padded space to prevent injuries. There are giant rollup doors all around the place, for those summer months when it starts getting hot, allowing us to come year round. There are parallel bars, balance beams of varying heights, springboards, a gymnastics horse, and a rectangular trampoline that covers more than 20 feet, for a running/tumbling/jumping experience that is exciting and fun for all who try it! The staff of the Magdalena Ecke YMCA Gymnastics Center are all equally amazing. They're also a nonprofit organization, so the fact that they show another nonprofit such generosity in providing staff and free space for these monthly events shows the level of dedication and sense of community that they want to help instill for our families. They're always available to ask questions, and they ensure that safety protocol is always followed appropriately. You can tell that many of these people, a mixture of paid personnel and volunteers, have just as much fun at these monthly events as the attendees do! There is a spacious area outside of the gym, around the corner from the entrance and main lobby area, where you can still view the entire gymnasium and people having fun in it as you have a bottle of water or enjoy a piece of pizza (both are usually provided by the Autism Society San Diego each month). There are also restrooms conveniently located next to this area, so you're never too far from the main gymnasium area. In the lobby, there's a registration desk, two giant television monitors that explain upcoming events, and a small, round table where parents or other guests can take a seat and have a break. The entire gym's indoor perimeter is surrounded by windows. Facing inside the gymnasium, so parents can have a comfortable seat while they watch their children and other family members play. As far as accommodations for all sorts of attendees, it appears they've thought of everything! The parking lot is spacious, but unfortunately, for its size and the amount of Disability friendly events they hold there, the Magdalena Ecke YMCA falls incredibly short in its availability of disabled parking spaces...there are only two in the lower parking lot (which has no ramp or other way to reach the front door, so it's not exactly designed for those with physical disabilities that require access to the building. The upper parking lot, which many don't even know about, has one or two disabled parking spaces, and you can walk around the side of the building to enter through the front that way...but they don't have that clearly marked nearly well enough for it to be beneficial to attendees. This accessibility issue is actually troublesome, considering the fact that this is the YMCA, and they should probably know better. It's one of the few flaws in this location. There are also many other programs going on at this location, including summer camps and regular gymnastics classes. I believe they even have classes for those with disabilities as well. For this and so many other reasons, we love the Magdalena Ecke YMCA! The view is beautiful...it faces the ocean, and occasionally, you can see the Coaster train if you happen to be outside when it passes. You feel like you're looking out over the sea and the extending horizon. It's a very lovely location, staffed by amazing individuals, all of whom care deeply for their community. We are looking into some of their other programs now, because our family enjoy supporting nonprofit organizations that give back so much to their communities. Magdalena Ecke YMCA embodies the mission statement of the entire YMCA...and we are very fortunate to have a facility like this so close to home. We look forward to this every month! The Ecke YMCA Competition Pool was full of bird feces when I swam Friday, 1/2/2023. The roof panels in the center of the swimming pool were removed over the next lane, towards the deep end, and hundreds of bird droppings were on the bottom of the middle of the pool. I came home with a rash. I called the YMCA multiple times Friday, 1/20/23, left voicemails, and no one answered. I sent an email to the San Diego County YMCA with no response. After four days of antihistamines for the pool rash (only on torso under swim shirt because I was covered with zinc oxide from head to toe), and I called the Ecke again this morning (5 days later). No one answered, and I left more voicemails. Pools containing feces must be shut. So, I called the County of San Diego Health to report the Ecke YMCA pool. After, I received a return phone call from the YMCA which denied culpability (claimed noone has complained) and canceled my membership. I asked for the Aquatics Manager's extension (the one online is wrong), called it, and no one answered. The pool needs to be emptied and cleaned. Left 2 stars so people would read. The YMCA rep actually said that he received compliments on the cleaniness of the pool. I didn't add that there was a large bandaid stuck to the the pool and hair and mucus floating. The Executive Director, Lauren Hall had her assistant return my call six days later about feces in the swimming pool. read more

I've been a member of the Y for nearly 20 years. I use the weight room and cardio room 3x per week and have used the pool. The facility is clean and the equipment is well-kept. My husband and I have also taken yoga classes in the past. It's a great place to work out and it's how I stay in shape. It's not the most modern of facilities but that's not what I'm looking for. During Covid they made every accommodation to keep it running by putting the equipment outside. I was so appreciative of that. I am definitely a fan and will keep coming back! read more
