Dishonest owner. Purchased a 4 lb (!) bag of chickpeas which became infested with bugs not long after. The bag was UNOPENED with an expiration date of 2024. I brought the item back for an exchange and was immediately and loudly accused that I had not purchased the product there. I told them I could show them my credit card bill (since I'd thrown away the receipt). THEN the owner rudely and loudly yells at me that they don't take returns after 30 days. Then changed his mind to 2 weeks. (!!) Again, the bag was unopened with an expiration date of 2024 (!!!) Horrible people. I've bought bags of beans and chickpeas from Walmart that stayed fresh for years! Never thought I'd be treated like some sort of criminal for wanting an exchange for sth THEY sold that was obviously BAD! To think I bought several 4 lbs bags!! read more

How have I not reviewed the big mac daddy of Indian groceries in metro RVA? I have cooked, eaten, and loved Indian food since my teen years in London. My heavily stained copy of Julie Sahni's Classic Indian Cooking is my bible for all things Indian cuisine, Laxmi always has everything I need to make it authentic. Love this place! My go to place for anything Indian. The store is clean organized and labeled.... LaBeLeD? You ask?..Yes labeled... There are so many times when I go to an ethnic grocery store and have no idea what something is.. frustrating... Laxmi has a large fresh herbs section and its very reasonable at under $2 a bunch. I picked up some dill, mint and cilantro. The older gentleman at register (probably the owner) was super nice and helpful. He answered all my questions, offered advice and explained the differences in quality of basmati rice. "Lexus vs Toyota, Corolla" he explained... Excellent service though I've only shopped here a couple of times! Spoke to owner who gave me Indian tea on the house so next time I'll purchase more! Look in the back frozen bread aisle & the tea/coffee machine is there. Such a variety of products & for me affordable prices. I was told by the owner this Asian-Indian grocery store has been around for 20 years! It's clean & organized with labels & prices posted. Great place for all of your South Asian Cuisine needs. You can find pretty much anything you'll need ranging in sizes from small to huge containers. You'll find everything you can imagine from ghee to almond oil; coconut oil; naan galore; fresh veggies; some you may recognize and some you won't; rivers of spices; and mountains of rice. You will even find things you might use for Latin foods like guava paste and coconut milk, and things for SE Asian food such as coriander roots, chili pastes, etc (bear in mind that indian and SE Asian chili pastes are not interchangeable, but you can find some of them here). Want hummus? Get your chickpeas and tahini here. Also, you can enjoy the amazing bottled Indian juices. They're always so fresh and pure-tasting without being overly sweet. Another plus is that they have fresh mango and papaya and it's probably reasonably priced. As far as store organization, this is a very well-organized, spacious store. Things are in places that make sense and you can have a pleasant shopping experience because you don't feel like you and the other customers are stuffed into the place like sardines. Prices here are reasonable and comparable to what I've found in other area Indian markets. However, on that pleasant shopping experience note, at specialized ethnic markets that are on the larger side like this one, don't expect someone to baby you down the aisles and give you a store tour. Not a bad store for Indian spices and things. I love the variety they carry. This is one of my go to stores for all things Indian /Pakistani. They have vegetables and frozen items that aren't that expensive, like samosa. I really like the spices collection they have. They have different brands and not just Shan. Definitely check it out if you want some spices or other items to make Indian/Pakistani food. The staff is friendly. Whenever I have questions there is always someone there to answer my questions. This place has whatever you need to stock an Indian pantry or make an Indian meal. I am used to the huge Indian supermarkets back home in Philly/NJ, and this store is comparable to those markets in terms of price and selection. It has some of the more esoteric ingredients (like fresh fenugreek, ivy gourd, and sorrel greens) as well as reasonably priced staples (e.g. 5 huge limes for a dollar). The store is clean and well-organized. Definitely worth a visit if you cook Indian food regularly. read more

Great find. This place is located in a little strip mall off to the side of Parham and Broad, and I finally got a chance to go in this afternoon. I was expecting it to be really authentic, and it was, but I was really pleased and surprised to find it spacious, well organized and easy to navigate. Most of the products didn't have English labels, so you kinda have to go by sight for some stuff, but I did find some lovely butter chicken sauce in a jar that I bought, as well as several microwavable meals (I imagine they are the Indian version of hamburger helper) to try out. I was surprised to see that they also have huge refrigerator cases of fresh veggies, and lots of frozen items as well. One thing in particular I know I am going back for is the paneer, which is Indian cheese and pretty hard to find... oh and it's also delicious with peas or spinach. Just sayin... If you like to cook Indian food at home, or check this place out. I don't do it often but I liked the variety, and the wide open aisles and cleanliness of the store, so I'll be going back. read more

A very decent Indian grocery store with a large selection of items and decent prices. I like how the store is run by men-no rudeness, no arguments, no lies, basically NO BS! The only downside is that they give you a hard time when you try to return a damaged item with or without a receipt! The store is usually clean except on extremely busy days. Always plenty parking and carts available. And one thing I like is after shopping, you can always go next door and eat some delicious dosas! read more

I am not confident of the "Clarified Butter" they sell. I bought three different types of 'Clarified Butter' from this store, one of them was supposed to be 'organic'. When I melted them it at home, the colors changed and none of them showed any properties of 'butter'. It produced a faint smell of a dalda (vegetable ghee) and even did not spark flame when put on fire. I called the store if I could return them but they said 'NO'. I had to trash all three bottles. Fantastic! Well organized, with just about any South Asian thing you could want for your home and culinary needs. They have religious/puja items, beauty/grooming goods, incense, cookware, some organic dry pantry items(!!!), and a really impressive array of Indian frozen vegetable mixes. I was also impressed by the array of fresh vegetables available, some of which I didn't think I'd be able to find in the U.S. As other reviewers have noted, though, the coolers they're kept in could be colder and freshness seems a little variable. Here's what I picked up on my most recent visit, to give folks a sense of the variety of yummy offerings here: ready-made laddoos and kaju katli, basmati rice, split urad dal, mustard oil, cilantro, onion, garlic, ginger, tomato, bitter melon, rasmalai dessert mix, yogurt, ghee, big bag of cumin powder, frozen naan, frozen aloo paratha, multiple flavors of kulfi in single-serve cups, frozen grated coconut. ...Aaaand now I'm hungry. read more

Indian grocery store with a great selection. I come here for bulk spices, which they carry for way cheaper than the regular grocery store. This place is heavily frequented by the local Indian community, and is in a shopping center with a lot of other Indian stores. They also carry lots of unique snacks, and frozen meal items, and other things like incense in addition to fresh food. The store itself is not big, but you will most likely find what you need. read more

Great place for Indian Groceries. I visit this place once a week for all my south indian groceries and I love the gongoora (spinach) here :) . As every coin has both sides, I had a bitter experience with this store, I dont want to compare apples to oranges, I mean compare an indian store to American store. But I did not even open the product, and i had to lose $40, as the sales are final. It was my fault that i should have checked before buying here. Lesson learned. :) The only thing I want to mention is that if you buy any utensils or appliances, the sales are final and cannot be returned. :( Well i already lost $40 for two products that i purchased, and I dont want any body to lose anything for the purchases on UTENSILS/APPLIANCES, as you can try finding any available alternatives before purchasing here. Long story short. I bought two indian pressure cookers (Futura-Hawkins) and I saw a deal in Amazon after coming home that night . To my surprise i found the same two items priced $40 lesser ($20 lesser on each product ) with shipping and i called the store the next morning for the return policy, i was informed that i can return the products with in seven days, with a receipt and I agrred to return in the evening as they cannot do a price match online ,as I did not open it. Fair enough. and to my surpise i received a call back with in half an hour and i was told that it cannot be returned, and I was informed that all the sales are final. I spoke to the same person who contradicted himself, he is the owner and he informed his name as Kamalesh. For the first time he asked me to return the product and again called back and informed that he cannot accept the return. I was told that it was displayed in the shop that all the utensil sales are final, which he should be knowing when he committed that i can return the product when i first called, and then contradicted with a call back. But I appreciate Kamalesh for giving me a call back and explaining me that he cannot accept the return and who gave a deaf ear to my concern. I really can understand its business and every business has its own boundaries, but the strange thing being the store is contradicting itself giving a deaf ear to the customers. I would say that its a good store for Indian Groceries. read more

Great prices, very friendly, and also very clean. I wasn't sure about this place going in... some of the local ethnic markets are sorta nasty and the people aren't very friendly. Here it was very bright and clean, and they were all nice and friendly to me. They have some great bargains, and a lot of stuff you can't find elsewhere. Love having a vegetarian Indian store. I don't have to worry about exposure to non-veg stuff. Very clean & organized. Well run...no complaints. Have been shopping there for over 5 years. The only reason I didn't give 5 stars is: wish for better quality pujan idols would be desirable, but the selection at Laxmi is better than the other Indian stores.
