While I was walking away from the meat stand, I heard a man working in the back area making degrading comments about my body in Cantonese. He appeared to be in his 60s and commented that I had "breasts but no ass." It was completely unsolicited, inappropriate, and perverted. I had not talked to him so I guess he assumed I wasn't fluent in the language. What makes this especially concerning is that this was said by an employee while I was simply going about my business as a customer. I could easily be around the same age as his granddaughter, which makes the comment even more disturbing. No customer should have to be subjected to sexual comments or degrading remarks about their body. I hope management takes this seriously and addresses the behavior of the men working in the back. I have frequented this place since I was a child, which makes this experience especially disappointing and unsettling. One plus is they have good vegetable options. Another down side like most people say, a lot of their non-perishables are expired. I have been going to this store for my entire life, over 20 years. Every other Asian market has problems that this one does not: I can't say that the workers here are overly pleasant, but my experiences at other places involved nasty interactions with employees, bad service, and crappier goods. Everything here is almost always in-stock, and I've been buying their fresh fish and meat for that long, too: it has never disappointed me. It was ok place to shop at Tan A Supermarket 新亞超級市場 as for quick grab. I was driving from Ashland to nearest Asian grocery store right after the Tropical Storm 16 passed. My friend told me he couldn't find papaya. I swore Asian markets sell them. So, here we are. And we arrived near their closing time. They gave us plenty of hints as that was it. I saw papaya and sesame paste desserts 芝麻糊 I want to buy. Quickly walking around, I stumbled upon stuff on the floor. Narrow aisles are dangerous for clumsy people like me. Ahhhh. My favorite Asian and international grocery store in Richmond other than the market next to Chengdu restaurant and New Grand Mart. Fun fact, this was the first Asian store I went to when I came for college. Many a night runs have been made here when I missed Asian snacks or food. It's small, but it's well-stocked and has everything from the trendy ramen, Asian candies, instant coffee to the more traditional Asian produce, old school snacks, and fresh meat and fish. I believe the owners are Chinese-Vietnamese and speak Mandarin, Cantonese, and Vietnamese. Don't let them put you off, they're just very about business and efficiency. They're not really ones for niceties (please or thank yous), but don't take it personally. The best treasures in this spot that I miss are their giant Vietnamese-style meat buns near the checkout line that have the juicy pork and quail egg filling ($1.50 each as shown in pic), fresh spring rolls ($2.75 for package as shown in pic), sesame balls, and other Vietnamese and Chinese desserts and pastries. Also, they have these amazing Cheung Fun or rice noodle roll (around $5) that have bits of pork, shrimp, and chives incorporated into them. They have these little cute packages wrapped in plastic with a plastic fork, so you can totally warm them up really quickly and eat them on the go. I recommend having them with soy sauce and sriracha. Sorry, didn't get pictures of the Cheung Fun. Having Cantonese or southern Chinese snacks are kinda rare, so I always loved grabbing these cheap eats for road-trips or breakfast. Support this local business! There was a large cardboard box of rotten mangoes by the front of the store and prepared food was sitting out on a table, unrefrigerated. Tan A, Tan A. Where do I start... Let's start on a high note with some pros. The store is very large and there is quite the selection of Asian produce, snacks, and other grocery items. It's relatively easy to find what you want, and it's laid out sort of like you'd expect a grocery store to be laid out. There are a lot of different flavors of candy and snacks. Also, it's very close to some very good pho restaurants, so if you wanted to get a lunch or dinner at one, you can easily hit it up on the way back (which is what I've been doing). Now some not so high notes. The service is very spotty. Of the 3 or 4 times I've been here, only once did the cashier seem to even acknowledge my existence. Not even exaggerating, I've had times where not even one word was spoken to me. Including the price. I've had to look at the slightly angled cash register itself to see how much I owe. In fact, today I stood there with my $22 in hand after she scanned my items for about a minute while she turned her back and started to talking to an Asian family an aisle over. Also, other people have mentioned it, but the back part of the store smells like fish. It smells this way because the back part of the store is packed with fish. I'm not saying that it's a bad thing, but it's a strong smell that most people don't find too appealing. There are meats and crabs scattered about in the back too. I guess if you're shopping for this kind of item then it's perfect. I know those last two paragraphs make the place sound deplorable, but really, it's not so bad. The customers seem to be pretty nice and as I mentioned before, the selection really is quite impressive. We've bought snacks, tapioca pearls, tea mixes, mochi, ice cream, and some other odds and ends. I would buy the produce too if I needed an asian fruit or vegetable. We went to Far East around the corner and in comparison, Tan A is much larger, wider aisles, and laid out more intuitively. It's too bad that the staff at Tan A are so difficult to work with. It certainly can't be just because it's an Asian Grocery Store because Far East's staff was very helpful. All that said, I still say to check it out if there's something you're looking for. I am in love! Why have I not been here before?! After eating brunch at a nearby pho place, we decided to stop in to buy a few things since it was so close. I ended up spending $100. Just about everything you could possibly want is here. They have interesting produce, really fresh seafood, sauces, noodles, wrappers, cookware, drinks, spices, tea, candy...and the list goes on. It's nothing like the Eden shopping center in Northern VA but it does carry the stuff that I need to make my Vietnamese traditional dishes. We always come where to grab our Bok choy, banh bao, cooked noodles, soup meat/seafood balls, Chinese sausages, sriracha (the BIG ones), and the better versions of ramen. They seriously have a lot of spices and sauces for any Asian style recipes you are pursuing to make. They have a meat deli in the back where you can get some meat/seafood, I normally get chicken feet from the back. I haven't had anything else so I cannot honestly say. After getting my groceries, my husband and I always tend to grab a banh bao or the sticky rice patty. Def worth grabbing to snack on later. They now started taking debit cards with a min of $15, they use to only take cash or checks. Definitely love coming here to get my Asian cook on! read more

I've been going here since the early 2000s, and wow. This place has really fallen off. The rude service has always been a thing, but their selection nowadays pales in comparison to years past. Every time I go there, something that I would normally get is no longer there. They're the only place that carries Nissin Demae ramen, and if I could get it somewhere else, I would. We bought a bag of imported dry noodles (Hankou noodles) about two weeks ago. It smelled and tasted bad. Then we checked it carefully and found it was expired a year ago. The gas fee will be more expensive than the noodles price if we go back to return it. All we can do is to trash it and never go back. read more

Prices aren't terrible, but they aren't outstanding Also, please BEWARE before you purchase any items, check the expiration date, it's not a surprise to find over expired items on the shelves. The cashier ringing up your items she would throw it onto the counter for the person bagging your items. After I thanked her for the receipt, she just rolled her eyes. I can tolerate bad fishy smells, unorganized aisles after aisles, but I can not and will not tolerate RUDENESS. Especially the owner who is extremely disrespectful to her customers. They have excellent veggies- great mushrooms and greens, plus fresh fruit. My husband also discovered that they have a huge selection of vegan foods in the back freezer- including some really unique vegan "seafood". We usually come here for sauces and fresh veggies. The staff are friendly, but not obsequious, so don't come expecting them to gush over you. They're doing their job and will be able to help with any questions you have and will package your food impressively into a recycled box. Great place to stock up on sauces too! read more

It is what it is. I hear people complaining about customer service and the cleanliness of the store which I won't disagree with, but if you don't like it don't shop there. I think some of the customer service has to do with a language barrier. I've frequented this store for years. It's not any different than any Asian markets in big cities. Rule of thumb.... do not buy meat or fish.... the sanitation is not great, but they have a great selection of Asian products. The staff has never been overly rude to me. My one complaint is I wish all of the products were labeled with the correct price. However I was just in Target yesterday and they had whole sections without pricing. This is probably one of the most difficult reviews I have written thus far as this Supermarket is the ONLY Oriental/Asian grocery store in the RVA area that has a vast selection of grocery items and it's hard to compare to other places like it (i.e.- Far East) because this place just seems like they don't care about anything. Location: located in a little "Asian" neighborhood with several Pho restaurants, Vietnamese Bakeries and a small collection of shops that sell other kinds of goods. Location is great if you're looking to buy/eat Asian because you can just park your car and walk down the street to your next shop. Parking is adequate as they have about 40 or so parking spots but beware the roaming shopping carts in the lot as you might find a nice new dent on your vehicle... This store used to be an old Wal-greens or CVS (they still use their carts/baskets... one major sign that they dont want to invest in this place). The employees are VERY unhelpful. Every time I go with my mom or go with anyone else, they either just point to where the item is or don't seem friendly at all about improving the customer shopping experience. Also, forget small talk with them at the register as they ALWAYS seem to be talking to other employees there at a very elevated tone... Prices are pretty steep too... At least when compared to grocery stores in California. Granted, the prices are cheaper on the West Coast b/c of higher demand/supply, but It's because they know they can charge whatever they want and people will still come back because they're the only store to carry the product and it's the "cleanest" one. FYI, this floor of this grocery store is always pretty dirty and has stuck on stains. And immediately when you enter the place, you smell of rotten fish... and that's due to them improperly displaying/storing the fish in open air and dont have proper dispersal air units. The selection of goods is decent, you can usually find whatever you need there: and assortment of fish, pork bellies, shrimp, beef, cilantro, limes, bean sprouts, chinese broccoli, tofu, sweets (cookies + candies), variety of canned jellos, whole isle of dried noodles, rice cookers, utensils, and even blankets and altars. They also occasionally have "fresh" steamed buns and traditional Asian pastries and dishes on the weekends which are decent. This place takes cash and I believe check as well, but definitely nothing plastic. If you have to go shopping here, put in ear plugs and get used to the scent; It's always there when I go. I think this was one of the first asian markets in Richmond. Luckily, there are many more to choose from now. The have a good selection of products and fresh produce. But what really annoys me is the lack of any customer service by the check out clerks/owner. She is either on the phone, talking to her coworkers, or eating something when she is ringing me up. The great thing about Tan A is that if you are looking for "ethnic" ingredient you will likely find it. However, they only accept cash and check which is annoying. The selection here is huge, I cannot deny that, and I've bought rather a lot of stuff here, but lately I've found excuses not to come. The service has always been nonexistent- I hope you never have questions because no one is going to answer them- and the utter lack of any sort of labeling in English is frustrating. Their continued refusal to accept credit cards is both frustrating and suspicious since they are certainly a large enough business to afford a credit account without especially injuring their bottom line. I do appreciate having an Asian grocery store in this part of Richmond, but I don't think I'll be a regular here. If you follow my food reviews, you will notice I eat a lot of Asian cuisines. After a random impulse to actually cook Asian food I stopped in here for the first time in several years. Not much has changed in its appearance and the selection of different Asian cuisines is good. I noticed the seafood selection in particular was plentiful and quality. Unfortunately as I remember from years ago, prices are high and customer service is nonexistent. I paid about $40 for a very small amount of groceries including a $10 quart of ice cream! They do finally accept cards but with a $15 minimum which still seems incredibly frivolous. High prices aside what really gets under my skin is poor customer service. When I checked out, the cashier didn't greet me or even look at me.
