I couldn't believe New Grand Mart has almost all mushroom varieties in the Asian markets: fresh Shiitake Mushrooms, Oyster Mushrooms, King Oyster Mushrooms (hardiest kind), White Beech Mushrooms, Brown Beech Mushrooms, Snow White Mushrooms aka Seafood Mushroom, Enoki (good for grilling), Wood Ear Mushrooms aka black fungus 黑木耳 (incredible meat texture), Baby Bella Mushrooms and Button Mushrooms. The only thing I didn't see was portobello Mushrooms. I immediately noticed the clientele was mixed ethnicity. Wow, the store was playing Spanish music and there were aisles of Hispanic products. So, I concluded that New Grand Mart is a truly an international supermarket. Definitely a good place to share my food culture knowledge by bringing people from other areas to come explore.

This is a great little market with a great selection of all things Latin at incredible prices (particularly the spices). But this place has a something extra to offer with their small lunch counter in the back. On this trip in, DH and I ordered a bunch of the al pastor tacos (priced at $2 each). They were served up in soft corn tortillas and dressed with chopped onion and cilantro (just like they should be). Their salsa verde comes on the side. You may want to do to the finger test before pouring it over your taco as it is pretty hot and spicy. But it complemented the flavors of the al pastor tacos beautifully. Washed down with a bottled limeade, it made for a great little lunch.

It sits along Broad Street near Willow Lawn and it's one of those places you drive past a dozen times without ever stopping. Slightly hard to access, easy to overlook. That's a shame because this isn't a casual grab-and-go -- it's a destination, even if the vibe is completely unpretentious. A friend suggested it and it made my day. The Greek radio station playing nothing but 80s and 90s covers of songs I grew up with didn't hurt either. Next time I'm not trying to make just one meal of it.

Upon entering, you'll see shirts, CDs and other items, don't let it fool you, as the food is yet to come. Entering the second zone you will find the cheeses, meats and fruits. The ripe plantains are excellent for making maduros! The yucca root's are by far the best we've bought anywhere in recent memory. My wife loved the chorizo she purchased there and they have a good selection of Latin cheeses. The third area is where you'll find all of the packaged items, but it also has a little fresh empanada case and in the back a small deli. It is also the only place anywhere that we've lived in the US where they sell both the yellow and white harina used for making arepas (a venezuelan/columbian sandwich like dish), as well as the meal for making pupusas. The pricing for most all items is exceedingly reasonable, given the size of the store! So as someone used to say, the wrapping is not what's important, it's whats on the inside that counts, and for sure what's on the inside of Mi Rincon Latino is perfect for those wishing to cook Latin cuisine.

The beans are made from dried refried bean flakes and rehydrated. I believe the rice mixture is the same and it was pretty flavorless as well and had poor texture. Beans and rice are inexpensive and easy to cook from scratch, so I do not understand why any place would serve such inferior food quality. We had a very nice server. I doubt we will be back to purchase pre-made food in the restaurant part of the market, but may stop in to purchase some of the grocery items (dried peppers, dried beans, etc.).
