The food is all overpriced, mainly because the produce is organic or 'artisan', and many of the suppliers are also based at Borough Market. But it was en route to Sloane Square and we fancied spoiling ourselves! The market is small enough to wander around in a few minutes and get everything you desire, but if you're watching the pennies be warned that the stall with the cheaper lettuce may sell the most expensive carrots - so shop around! Also it might be better to get there early. We arrived at 12ish and were limited in choice at the sausage stall and the tomato stall had sold out of tomatoes, tomato juice and passata! We got: some fab pork sausages (£3.99 for six), some delicious spinach and feta and cheddar and leek mini quiches (3 for £5); a steak and ale and Thai curry pie (£3.75 ea i think); a tasty apple and blackberry smoothie (£4 a litre) and lots of fresh veg and eggs. Next time i'm feeling plush i'm going back for the smoothies, quiches and pies! And right now i'm going to put that pie in the oven...

What I love about this market is it has everything I need, but isn't too big, crowded, and overwhelming. Coming from California, I was overjoyed to find high quality fresh kale at such great prices. In addition to great produce, there are a few fish and meat vendors (look for the man with the sundried-tomato turkey burgers..they are great!), bakeries, pie minister, organic food stands, and dairy farmers. I was chatting to the owner and they make a trip up to London daily to get their stock and everything is always very fresh. The prices are comparable with the supermarket, but you may end up paying a little more if you use the greengrocer. Still, there is always a better quality of product here and you know it hasn't been sitting around in a supermarktet cold room for a couple of weeks before going onto the shop floor. They also sell a number of natural drinks like ginger beer and dandelion and burdock (one of my faves). I imagine that a number of the local restaurants would be using this place for their fruit and veg and this really can't be a bad thing. Rather than stop off at a newsagent for a chocolate bar, you wouldn't go wrong to pick up something from here instead.

Owned by two of the most helpful and friendly grocers in London- Adrian and Jason- the shop sells high quality fresh fruit and vegetables on a seasonal basis. Everything is beautifully arranged- the presentation is immaculate, especially at Halloween and Christmas. My friends who live locally, will now not shop anywhere else. They even arrange weekly vegetable and fruit boxes through them. Last Summer I asked them to put together a small fruit platter for me- I only had 20 pounds- and they delivered the most enourmous, extravagant platter that few 20 people. I was so impressed- they put in beautiful apples, strawberries, pears, mango and melon- a lot of the money. They also stock an amazing selection of pickles, preserves and Chegworth Valley apple juices.

However, I came across while making my way to the tram stop on the south side of town to get back to Wimbledon It's an old fashioned fruit and veg market but the quality does vary quite widely with commensurate difference in price. Just beware that if something seems too good to be true, it probably is too good to be true However, with many stalls to gander at, there is ample opportunity to pick out some good yet quality bargains, especially as most stallholders seem happy to let you pick and choose your own produce In addition, there are some bric a brac stalls and some food stalls selling mainly ethnic food I hope there's always space for places like this

I didn't think it was much at the time when I lived in South Croydon, but now I really do miss places like this. I miss wandering "down to town" and passing this market and then wandering pass it again on the way home. It was a great place, full of vibrant people, a decent selection of stalls including ones that sold fresh fruit and veg, bags, purses, books, watches, pendants, antiques, flowers, specialty foods and the list goes on. In general, the number of stalls increased during the weekends. As with most outdoor markets, there's potential for haggling if you're into that kind of thing. There's also a lot of trash, but beauty is in the eye of the beholder... keep your eyes peeled for bargains in the summer, such as freshly plucked berries at an amazing price! Towards closing time (around 5:00 pm), there were lots of bargains that could be had: 1 pound for this or 1 pound for that. That is if you can understand the locals, screaming in cockney rhyming slang. There is nearby street parking, but the best bet would be to park near the city centre and walk down. I was lucky enough to live within walking distance of this market.
