This is a good restaurant if you are looking for a sit down pizza place that isn't crowded yet it's in a pretty accessible if staying close to old port. I ordered the Margherita which was good, nothing out of this world, but good enough and fairly priced. Granted, Portland is home of the food snobs and has lots of great restaurants. As food snobs "from away" my expectations were low. But we were very impressed with this casual little joint. Moderate ambiance, very friendly and efficient service. Extremely good food and drink. My Manhattan was not for the faint of heart. I'm a bit of a lightweight but can usually manage 2, maybe 3 drinks when out. One was my max and even then, needed to pace myself on a not-very-empty stomach. Calamari can be great or awful - at Lazzari it is decidedly great. Tender and piping hot. The mushroom pizza was just right. Thin crust style but with plenty of cheese and special sauce. Just loved the pepperoni pizza. It was true Neapolitan, with charring on the excellent crust. It had spicy peppers on it, but they weren't overwhelming hot. Perfect, actually. Really excellent pizza! Let me start by saying I hate cracker crisp pizza. This pizza is not that. It is Crispy, yet soft. Substantial crust to hold, yet paper thin under the toppings. Housemade cheeses are worth the trip alone - Creamy and smooth. I have tried two pizzas so far and I would definitely recommend them both: Sausage and Onion and Roasted Brussels Sprouts and Pancetta. I seem to end up at Lazzari at least once a month, primarily for drinks and a snack. The meatballs are pretty decent, as are most of the salads. The cocktail list (and strength) makes my lady happy and they have a small (well, by today's standards) but pretty great beer selection. The bar staff is awesome and gets it done. It's a great alternative to trying to cram into the DTL or CB&G. This visit was different however. Dairy doesn't agree with me too well, hence the usually coming here for apps, but I've found some good dairy-bustin' pills and have been compiling a list of the places/foods I've been dying to try. So, I came into Lazzari with high hopes and well over a year of anticipation to try this pizza. It did not disappoint. We split a pizza with half pepperoni (has hot cherry peppers) and half of their sausage. I didn't find the peppers particularly hot on the pepperoni, but I'll also load one up with jalapeños, so that's sort of what I was expecting. Not thick like Slab, not soggy thin, just a great quality pizza with really good ingredients. So glad I was able to make this finally happen. read more

Amazing pizza! Real hardwood bricks and a beauty of an oven. They staff is relaxed but they take the food seriously. The bartenders are pumping our drinks while changing up the music via vinyl. Tried out Lazzari last night. Overall, really enjoyed my experience. What I got and how it was you ask? Gin Martini - a bit on the small side. Will stick to their cocktail menu or beers next time - though the price at $8 wasn't bad. Grilled Beets - delicious! Loved the mint, goat cheese and pickled onions. A really tasty starter. Pies: Brussels sprouts and pancetta- nice pizza but is more prominent with the pancetta than the Brussels - no complaints but wouldn't have minded more of the. Brussels. 4 Cheese w/ garlic spinach - Really nice flavor, some great bits of roasted garlic in certain bites were delicious. Great pies in general, albeit a little on the greasy side as seen in one of the photos; but not enough to keep me away though. I'll be back for sure! read more

This is my favorite place to get pizza. Its casual and unassuming without being gross and divey. And it's open late aka past 9 which in Portland is amazing. The service is very good and the waiter really makes you feel comfortable and welcome. The meatballs were so good and definitely the best I've had in Portland. They're melt in your mouth with great flavor. The spaziato - spicy sausage pizza was excellently spicy but it really is spicy. The margarita was thin and delicious and I dare say reminded me of nyc pizza. The overall pizza is very thin crust and crispy edges which I really enjoy. Its a great thing to share on a casual date night and I absolutely will be back to try their other flavors. read more

Pizza! Molto Bene! This place has excellent oven fired pizzas. I am just passing through, and I found this spot on Yelp. The pizza is almost as good as Italy. I was hoping to find hot dogs and capers with goat cheese, (hint hint) but the menu choices were solid. The anti pestos were excellent. The staff was excellent, and the bar is very nice. My wife and I stopped in after going to the Portland stage for a play. it was a warm night, seats outside, and on our way home so we decided to sit down for some dessert and espresso. They advertise espresso on the window glazing. The cannolis always were fine, BUT the espresso was undrinkable. It came without sugar, it came without a spoon, and was your basic Lavazza which is not top shelf IMO. My expectations were high and they were not met. I didn't expect a little lemon strip which is customary in Europe or other Espresso bars, but I did expect an awesome espresso, a spoon and some sugar. I was very disappointed and won't go back because of it. Table service was excellent, and the vibe was chill. So no problems with either Service or atmosphere. The rogue bartender who blares music and insults guest who complain about it is the reason I haven't been back in some time. I was there five minutes before opening and asked to sit inside with the AC since it was sweltering outside. She screamed at me 'What part of we're not open don't you f'ing understand!" Then she was utterly rude to me and my party through the whole meal. Apparently she's management or so she says. The owners need to intervene. I worked in food service for over two decades and she is by far the most insulting, rude, and arrogant server I have ever encountered. read more

My first experience here... I was not a happy camper. I felt as though we were putting the staff out by existing and the prosecco seemed lackluster and off? (But that could of just been my hurt feelings). Then I went a second time and really enjoyed it! The bartender was definitely working it, having a full rail and service bar to prepare drinks for. If you want a laid back, trendy pizza restaurant that offers a great selection of drinks and appetizers too (don't miss out on these!!!), Lazzari is your place. Pizza crust is light and crisp. Not overly thin or too thick. Service consistently friendly and efficient. All time favorites are the Caponata (Bruschetta stacked with roasted and marinated eggplant, red peppers, and ricotta) and the mushroom pizza! The roasted brussel sprouts (sans pork) were good too but a little well-done for my liking and had A LOT of balsamic. Pizzas were good but not amazing. We never got our server's name (he didn't introduce himself which is standard as a waiter). He was a shorter black man with hoop earrings. He seemed upset from the start. He made fun of one of our party for the way they pronounced something on the menu, and not in the joking good natured sort of way. Then he brought our food and it almost seemed like he slammed it down on the table. He walked away without asking if we needed any condiments, etc. He never came back to check on us. We were all nervous to ask him for anything so we just ate and left without ordering any additional drinks. My experience here a few nights ago is the only bad experience I have had in a Portland restaurant in years. Commensurately, this is the only negative online review I have ever posted, but my first experience at Lazzari will also be my last. Everyone is capable of making mistakes, but apparently not everyone is capable of being gracious about them--as we learned from "Thomas", the server behind the bar. It's one thing not to know how to make a cocktail, but it is not acceptable for a server to become rude and aggressive when a customer politely explains that a dark & stormy does not have pineapple juice and that only one type of rum is called for. On his second try, the pours between our drinks were so conspicuously uneven that it bore pointing out. He said that he had made a mistake and given one of us too much so he made the other pour less to things even things out!!! To Lazzari's credit, the late-night food was good and the person presenting it expressed sympathy and commiseration, saying their colleague had had a long day. That was appreciated, but we had had a long day too, and the bartender was unpleasant enough for us not to want to ever go back to Lazzari. read more

This was our first time here. We are currently visiting. I'm only giving is 3 stars because it's a little expensive for some flatbread pizza. There was basically no sauce on the pizza, and the pie was thin as hell. Maybe it's just how they make them but we were kinda expecting it to be doughy and saucy. We asked for a little bowl of marinara sauce. Other than that, the service was nice, and their playlist was actually lit as hell. Pretty nice place. Sweet atmosphere. Fried manzanilla olives, stuffed with anchovies, garlic aioli and lemon makes for a GREAT starter! I could stop my review there, and if YELP would let me, I would. It's that good. I have actually only had this at Lazzari, along with happy hour drinks. The atmosphere is trendy, and cool. Bricks and exposed wood make for low lighting date night dream. Great dough, excellent and creative topping options and beyond that they have terrific small plates and sandwiches (try the meatball sandwich and the calamari- so good). First time here. Hipster spot, with a decent vibe and decor. Spacious. Not a fan of bars and hi tops with chairs that have no backs, which is the case at Lazzari....it's a big deal for us "older" types, but alas, I'm not their target demographic....so only mentioning as a point of reference if you are over 50. Bar menu had some funky drinks on it, and looked very eclectic and artisan in nature. I had a couple of wines by the glass which were decent pours, decent glassware, and ok value. Meatball appetizer was well above average. Very moist, and I would distinguish the ball mix which had some nice ground veal flavor. It was served with some creamy ricotta, fresh parsley, and ground pepper. This was a solid meatball, one that my Noni, who's made them for close to eighty years, would scarf down and approve. The pepperoni pie was pretty good....crust was semi thin, and toasted off well. The cheese was a nice melt, with oversized pepperoni's that left a well defined trail of grease, which blended perfectly with everything. This was a solid effort and good value for the price. This is a good spot for some decent scratch small plate tastes coupled with good pie, and creative mixology. I'm 4 star good here, and I'd return and recommend. read more
