A great find in the Saint-Catherine area of Brussels, Fin de Siècle does not disappoint. There tends to be a line but don't let that deter you as they turn tables pretty quickly. Food: The menu is set and they know what they're making. My go to is always the pork knuckle (jambonneau), served in a delectable mustard sauce with a perfectly baked potato and side salad. The carbonnade Chimay is a beef stew cooked in Chimay and served with mash potatoes. Homemade bread is served ahead of the meal, but beware of filling up on it. Portions are generous. Service: Straightforward and they speak English rather well. Food comes out quickly and you'll ask for the bill and pay it at the register. Cost: About €40 for two mains and two drinks. The best meal we had during our short Brussels & Amsterdam trip was here so by virtue of that, I'm going with 5 stars. Indeed, there was absolutely nothing wrong with what we had. Having read the yelp reviews prior to coming here, we knew we wanted to try the rabbit stew and the pork knuckle in mustard sauce. They did not disappoint. The pork "knuckle" here is more like a pork shank, which I am a big fan of, and having had quite a few different versions of it, I think this one was one of the better ones. The mustard sauce helped cut through all that meat and the the light, leafy cabbage balanced the plate. The rabbit came with potatoes, broccoli and string beans. The cherry sauce served with the rabbit was a good mix of sweet and sour (more sour than sweet which is the way it should be). For desert, I got the chocolate caramel tarte which had really good chocolate (we are in Belgium after all) while my wife had the speculoos which she loved as well. Overall, a fantastic meal at reasonable prices which I would highly recommend. read more

Great food and fun experience! I came here with my friend and we waited about 10 minutes since the place was packed. The menu items are written up in French and Dutch on the chalkboard, and the server explained all the specials to us in English. I got the beef stew and my friend got the pork knuckle - both were fantastic! The pork knuckle was particularly great. It was essentially a large chunk of ham on the bone. First let me assure you that the GPS location on the Yelp app is correct. At first I thought it's wrong because I couldn't see the restaurant. But you won't see the restaurant because it's so popular it doesn't have (or need) a sign. But don't bother looking for a sign. Just look for the restaurant with the longest line out the door and stretching half a block down the street. There are no paper menus. The "menu" is written on a blackboard behind the bar in French. (Belgium is mostly a Dutch-French bilingual country, but French is predominantly spoken in Brussels. Don't worry if you don't speak either language, as all the servers here speak English and they'll gladly help you order.) Don't look for any personal space, privacy or even a comfort zone. You'll be literally rubbing elbows with the parties next to you. But that's exactly what makes this place feel so cozy and warm. We were seated in a long table with plenty of locals as well as many European tourists from various countries. The atmosphere was absolutely lively, vibrant, and friendly. It was our second to last night in Europe and we were eager to savor every ounce of European culture and to soak in the love that was in the air. To make this a perfect evening in Brussels, the food was absolutely amazing. Carbonnade is a beef stew cooked in a strong brown or dark Belgian beer, which could be a Flemish Red or a Chimay. (While the best known Belgian beer in America is probably Stella Artois, Belgium actually has over 180 breweries producing over 1000 different premium beers.) The taste was rich and complex - the flavor of the beer was stimulating yet subtle and not overwhelming. The beef was literally melt-in-your-mouth tender. I couldn't recall a beef stew dish cooked that well, that flavorful, and that memorable. Most foodies probably know that Europe is famous for their regional sausages (Italian, German, Dutch, you name it...) So while in Brussels, I must sample a dish of Belgian sausages. It certainly did not disappoint. The sausage had a similar texture as a German Bratwurst but with a milder and sweeter flavor. It came with a slightly tangy and slightly sweet gravy which was very yummy and complemented the sausages perfectly well. I paired that with a bottle of Belgian blonde beer and I thought that was a good match. Service was amazing! The place was a complete full house and a mad house. Every one of them was so busy and they worked so hard. Yet, they were all so friendly and upbeat. Came to try Belgian food. They have five dishes that are traditional Belgian. We got the beef stew cooked in chimay and the pork shoulder. They also had a rabbit dish but we were told it was cooked in a sweeter sauce and a dish of stuffed endive. The dishes are large and the portion, especially the pork shoulder, felt like an endless amount of ham! So if you're into holiday ham but just a little less sweet, this is your dish! Comes with a mustard sauce and a side of salad and a baked potato. The beef stew was hearty and came with mashed potatoes. You can build your own dinner plate as well and they are accommodating of dietary restrictions. Waiters know English. They have a good selection of beer though not as extensive as other places in the city. Price for dinner is very affordable. Between both of us getting a dinner plate, water, one beer... it was less than 35 euros. It is cash only so be warned. Atmosphere is like a family bar/casual restaurant. Thanks to trusty Yelp, I found this gem of a place off the beaten path! It was zero degrees Celsius outside. We had been walking around all day in the freezing cold and were ready for some comfort food to warm out bellies and Le Fin de Siecle delivered! Located off a side street and with no street signage, this place is for the locals. The only menu they have is a huge chalkboard menu (in French) right next to the bar. The servers speak French, but most are able to converse in English and give you a quick rundown. Between the two of us we got a rabbit and a beef dish. Both were braised in their own Belgian beer sauce. Delicious! The portions were big, but everyone around us was cleaning their plate (as in seriously mopping up the sauce with the complimentary bread). Yeeees, the sauces are just that good. Cash only. I found this place on Yelp and I'm glad I walked a bit to find it. The ambiance is old school and the food is great. I thought I'd have to wait a bit for my food because it was so busy, but it came out promptly. As promised by another Yelper the waitress spoke English and walk me through the menu. There was a line when I walked out about 9 pm, but I walked right in at 7:30. I had the pork shoulder, which was great) with a baked potato and salad. The salad was OK, it had some very bitter leaf in it so I didn't finish it. The pork had a mild creamy mustard sauce that was delish (and I'm not usually a fan of mustard sauces, but i gobbled this one up), and the baked potato had a good quantity of butter (not a problem for me). The table was a bit dirty, but it's getting 4 stars mostly because I was a single & felt a bit neglected by the waiter. I was also stuck in a very lonely table away from other diners who were sat family style at long tables. The food would get me to go back again. We went right before they open in the evening and they let us sit outside with some beers while we waited for them to fully open for dinner. Then they moved us to a table inside and it wasn't even very crowded. We tried the jamboneau à la moutarde (pig knuckle in mustard sauce). It was a huge dish and we were able to share it between two people which made this place more affordable. The meat was delicious and it also came with potato and a salad. I am not in a position to evaluate the food in this establishment, but I can definitely speak about its customer service. Since they take no reservations, our party of six arrived right at opening time. We had a small dog inside a pet carrier. The manager asked and ascertained that the dog does not bark. We asked for a table in back, away from the draft of the door (in February). He refused on the grounds that some guests may be allergic to dogs. We deliberated among ourselves over two tables by the door, decided on one of them, and most of our party took their seats. Thereupon the manager told us that we had too many demands (actually all the demands were his, and we had acceded to all of them), he expected we would be problematic and he said refused to serve us. There were many other restaurants nearby, and they would be happy to serve us, he said. I informed the rest of our already seated party to stand up and leave, and we left. I cannot helped but think that racism may have played a role in our expulsion. I was the spokesman for the group: a male Caucasian, retired US diplomat who speaks fluent French and proficient Flemish from the time when I earned a masters degree from a francophone Belgian university. But the other fives guests were Chinese women. Our "motley crew" included a famous author of over 30 books who has won over 40 literary and film awards; a film actress and dancer who has won many awards and continues to do choreography in her 80s; a painter, naturalized German citizen, who just won a major award and has a painting hanging in the German Bundestag; a New York gallery owner and specialty coffee entrepreneur; and a retired Taiwan schoolteacher in her 80s. In short, we are people who know how to behave in polite society. I suggest that you take his advice and find another restaurant, particularly if you have people who are not a European appearance in your party. There is no reason to frequent this place when others welcome you with open arms and these people, as one says in Chinese, 给你看冷屁股， show you their cold buttocks. read more

Included a deliciously buttery baked potato and a green salad. Plenty of food for 2 moderately hungry people, but I ate almost all of it myself because it was just so GOOD! My wife ordered the Penne Pasta with Roquefort cheese. It was deliciously creamy and had a nice cut of Roquefort cheese slowly melting over the top of the perfectly cooked penne. If you're not familiar with Roquefort cheese, its similar to Blue Cheese, so it has a beautifully forward flavor of florals, salt, and a little bit pungent (in the best way possible). They had also put some toasted walnuts and fresh pomegranate in with the creamy base sauce which added some beautiful crunchy and sweet notes. We drank Leopold 7 beer all night with the meal and it was a great compliment to both dishes. This place was recommended by one of my friends and my Airbnb host, and it was the better of the traditional Belgian places that we ate at, so I'm glad we came here! It's super popular and seems to always have a line outside - a party of 2 is best if you want to get a seat on the quicker side. 3 or 4 is okay, but you'll have to wait longer, and don't try to come with a group larger than 4 unless you have a ton of patience and like waiting in line. Also note that they only take cash, so make sure you come prepared. We came here around 8 or 8:30 pm and waited for 30-45 min for a table. You can't put your name down and then leave and grab a beer - you have to physically stand in line, so just prepared for that. The tables are pretty close to one another, so don't expect a fancy, romantic meal here, it feels more like communal seating. The food comes pretty quickly and the service is good, so the table turnover remains high. The food menu is on a chalkboard behind the wall; there's a printed menu and a few extra beers that are newer on the chalkboard as well. Everything is pretty reasonably priced (around 15€ and the portion size is on the larger side. Probably not the best place to come if you're a vegetarian or trying to eat healthy, as most of the menu revolves around meat and potatoes. It's more of a comfort-food place and the dishes pair well with Belgian beer. Stoemp Sausage - This was one of my favorite dishes that I had during my 3 days in Brussels. The sausage was nicely browned, was tasty and not salty, and had a nice gravy/juice that pulled the whole dish together. It came with mashed potatoes and it was just delicious - I was sad when the plate was almost done! Beef Stew - This dish came highly recommended but I actually didn't care for this beef stew quite as much - maybe I got a bit of a dud of a dish, but some of the pieces were a bit chewy/grizzy or had some chunks of fat. I expected a beef stew where the beef was simmered for so long in beer that the meat just would fall apart. I felt like the chunks of beef were just a bit chewy. The gravy of the stew was good, and I liked mixing this with the mashed potatoes, but for my taste, I liked the sausage dish a lot better. The spare ribs and pork knuckle also looked like very popular, but I didn't have a chance to try these. The beers were quite good and also decently priced (beer is cheaper than water) and went nicely with the dishes. They only accept cash, the menu is entirely not in English--which doesn't hinder their ability to fill the restaurant at all--and it's a bit off the beaten path from the main center of town. Le Fin de Siecle hosts its share of out-of-towners, but the environment makes it work. The menu is up on a giant chalk board -- in French only -- and you'll squint your way through about 20 different items, most of which seem to be traditional, no-frills, and hearty. My colleague and I had the mixed meat brochette served alongside a simple salad, and fried calamari served on top of (you guessed it) a simple salad. And you know what? This is my idea of food heaven. The scene is energetic but not overwhelming. Lots of tables crowded together -- you'll be elbow to elbow with youngish, tattooed diners. I didn't count the minutes but it seemed about right when he came to get us to go sit at our table. The menu is written on a large board in middle of the restaurant. Our French was a little limited but we got the gist of it. The bearded man made some recommendations for us and we ended up ordering the traditional Belgian dish with sausages and mashed potatoes and a penne pasta with shrimp. We were already pretty tipsy from the wine but I thought the food was incredible. The bangers and mash had a rich, savory flavor and I think it beat out the pasta by a little bit even though the pasta was also very good. What I learned over the weekend? Another great find in Belgium, not too far from the Grand Place. It's a small place so be prepared to wait for a table, and don't be surprised if you are sitting next to people you don't know. Of course you start out with a little wine (okay maybe I start out with wine, my colleagues started out with beer) and then move on to the main course. For me it was the stoemp. What's not to like about sausage on top of mashed potatoes (chock full of veggies), with a nice jus? My tummy was very happy and so was my wallet.
