An exceptional, charming English-style pub located in the heart of Fontainebleau…read more When the highly-rated Restaurant La Petite Ardoise turned us away for not having a reservation, we wandered up the street slightly and we're charmed by the menu and the emptyness of Le Franklin. Turns out, this was a blessing in disguise for what turned out to be one of the best meals of our trip in France. I've always loved pub and bistro fare and ambiance, and Le Franklin was no exception. Besides the necessary plate of cheese and charcuterie for apero, we ordered exclusively off of the daily specials menu: Châtaigne Veloute (Chestnut Soup) and a cut of steak referred to as a "fuax fillet". The soup is served with a dollop of creme fraiche, while the steak comes with a side of the most delicious thick-cut fries and sautéed veggies. It is difficult with all the goodness, but you must save room for dessert, as there is a seemingly never-ending list of goodies make in-house. We landed on the Profitroles and Tarte Tatin - both of which are difficult to find traditional examples of in the States. Runners up included Mousse au chocolate and a Speculoos cake. Service was excellent and even with all of our indulgences, the bill came out to around $35 a person - more than reasonable.

This place has large portion sizes (by…read moreFrench standards) and is carb-heavy with generous servings of mashed potatoes, wild rice, and squash. It worked out perfectly because my brother was dining with me tonight and I think that this restaurant was perfect for him. I know that he wouldn't have been satisfied with just a cheese plate and some salad, which is what I got.

Brasserie Bellanger - Couldn't decide between the Bernaise sauce or garlic herb butter so got both!

Luca was my server and he was very welcoming in hospitable to this weary traveler. I sat on the patio towards the end of the row so I could take in the atmosphere and people watch a bit. Luca Recommended a meal with a mashed potatoes and sausage with French bread and salad and it sounded tasty so I gave it a go! All the flavors went well together; mashed potatoes were well seasoned the sausage had a good flavor, and the salad with the vinaigrette added a crunch in an extra flavor as well. I drank a French hard cider while I gobbled up my meal, which also was new for me and tasted great after I was done my meal. Luke brought me a shot with rum and some other ingredients, including lemon that definitely hit the spot after a good meal.I recommend Brasserie Belanger for anyone near GDN Train Station that enjoys great food and patio dining. Cheers!

The restaurant itself isn't small, but really not big, so it's definitely worthwhile to make a reservation at least a week or so on advance, otherwise you're pushing your luck. Everyone ordered steak frites (2 rump steak, 2 flank) and no one was disappointed. Steaks were cooked to order, although medium here in France is more like medium rare in the States, just be advised. The restaurant itself is lively and fun with lots of chatting, laughing and good times being shared. Desserts were Crème Brûlée and Apple Crumble, neither of which were disappointing. We definitely enjoyed our dinner and would likely return again. This time with a reservation made well in advance.
