We ordered a variety of traditional foods and shared, to get to try more of their options. I suspect the waitress dropped the knife as she was passing behind my back. She was non-apologetic and extremely aggressive and rude. Arguing that she did not know where the knife was coming from?! This should not have been her first reaction. I have to assume that somehow she lost the knife from a plate. She kept arguing with me when I pointed out that she should have shown some concerns and simply apologize. She initially did not. Eventually she came to her senses and finally somehow gave a fake apology. We left the premises without eating anything. The atmosphere was dark and kind of depressed. I have to assume that the owner must have been away. Quand le chat n'est pas la, les Souris dansent.

We were led to the back, to the jardin d'hiver which was warm (too warm--we had to get up and turn off the space heater) and sparsely decorated with plants and bamboo. I was tempted to get up and try another restaurant as soon as I saw the waiter carrying the veggie couscous broth over to a neighboring table, his thumb casually resting in the sauce as he held the bowl by its lip. If we weren't in a large group, I would have gotten up and left right then, but instead made a mental note to order a tagine, since the temperature of the dish would ensure that his fingers wouldn't slip into my food. We couldn't all order tagines, since they apparently did not have enough clay dishes to go around, so half of us ordered tagines of different varieties (lamb, kefta, chicken) and the other half ordered couscous. In the end, some tagines were served in regular bowls. Strike two: when the semoule was served in large family style pots, we discovered a hair nestled neatly in the top layer of the serving bowl. It was quickly removed and the meal continued. Then came strike three. The waiter offered an orange blossom cream dessert for my friend with candles for his birthday (the occasion for this lunch) and, sitting right on top of the chocolate-drizzled cream, was a long curly hair! One hair could happen. On the way from the kitchen to the table, perhaps. But twice in one meal, and a finger in the soup? Not okay. And if that still seems benign, my partner and I had digestive issues later in the day, something our adventurous tummies aren't accustomed to. It was kind of La Baraka to offer us a birthday treat and the 2€ mint tea at the end, but if they can't master the basics of food safety, the gesture doesn't count in my book.

Our waiter was so kind. Patient as he had to explain the menu choices to us as no English (or Hebrew) menus were available. At first, my hubby was going to take the sabich but our waiter recommended the mini pita boeuf bourguignon instead. What a great choice. The beef was so tender in a delicious sauce. For me, I chose the filet daurade sauce Vierde. The fish was amazing. Loved the sauce and the pomegranates and vegetables that complimented the fish. Paired with the most delicious salad and some grilled vegetables, it was just perfect. The salad had beets, carrots and celery with pomegranates. The veggies were so thinly cut almost like an angel hair pasta. The dressing was addictive. They should bottle and sell their salad dressing. With a couple of bottles of Pellegrino, a delicious dinner for two came to about 50 euros. Highly recommend this restaurant. Check the address, it may have moved to 70 Avenue de Villiers.
