    Lovely ambience and fantastic food, one of Chiswick's hidden gems. The atmosphere is formal but staff are friendly and very accommodating. The vacherin platter was generous in proportion and definitely a must for cheese fans, and the venison fillet was one of the best I have ever tasted. Great selection of wines on offer at varying prices.

    Competent cooking and a nice ambiance for Sunday lunch. And friendly professional staff. Perhaps too many British dishes for my taste.

Having trecked to deepest SW France every month for the past few years to visit mum I've seen the state of French rural cooking and it's not bon. So I was hoping a less intrepid short trek down the Shepherd's Bush Rd might yield something with a little more je ne sais quoi. The restaurant itself is most inviting. Obligatory 20's ad posters adorn the walls. Wooden tables with cloths, all that jazz. And I want the mustard tiles that adorn the loo. All very lived in and homely. And welcoming too. Our waitress bought the specials board with her and gave it some Anthea Redfern, our choices made all the harder for her doing so. Is there a man who doesn't tip up at a French bistro, scour the menu, deliberate, pontificate, cogitate and then order the steak and chips? If there is I'll show you someone going through transition. It's just what men do. And so did I. The steak on offer was onglet. Only the French can make a cheap choice sound exotic. Note. It's not cheap. £30. The missus went for a chicken and tarragon pie which sounded more French than that but basically it described a chicken and tarragon pie. We ordered a starter to share, anchoiade tartinette. Gentlemen's Relish on toast, not the strictest of Google Translates but serves my purpose here. What came looked a little uninspiring. I know bistro is homely and simple but this slice of toast with a mercifully thin spread of the salty stuff and topped with walnut and boiled egg needed a bit of sprucing up somehow. The plate looked bare but we both agreed any joy here was actually in the eating which frankly is the most important thing. We quaffed without quibble and enjoyed what we ate. Punchy, interestingly textured, it got the taste buds going for the mains. The steak was good. Quickly fried with lots of seasoning. Simple stuff for this simple man, The chips were excellent. Thin, brittle and immersed in good hot fat for a suitable period of time. I'm a lover of the big fat English chip but when a French fry is done this well it makes me wonder if Brexit may have been a mistake. The chicken and tarragon pie was a mess. This is the provincial French fare I remember so, um, fondly from my trips to see mum. Her eventual demise had one welcome upside inasmuch as I never have to face another boil in the bag confit duck horror show as long as I live. It really is a poor show food-wise out there right now unless you live in a city and even then it's slim pickings. This dish didn't disappoint in terms of authenticity. Leather-like pastry eventually giving way to dry chicken mush inside. There was a small jug of Dubbin for the purpose of lubrication but it only added to the sense that this dish had been lying around for some time before a quick tap tap ping. The mash potato accompaniment was even worse. Where they were trying to replicate the Robuchon butter heaven, sans butter,, what was delivered looked and felt like glue paste. Luckily it didn't taste of that, it tasted of nothing at all. And it had a skin on it. Something you had to break through to get to the warm bit. A complete disaster. I grabbed my pomme frites seven at a time as jealous eyes wandered towards the basket. That the same root vegetable could render two such contrasting end results seems almost impossible but there you go. I wondered why this cute little place couldn't just boil the potato, mash it, add a little milk, butter and salt, possibly some parsley and be happy with the result. It's hard to beat. Their efforts to do something more complex left us with wallpaper paste. Aside leather shoe with dry chicken mush. And gloop. The French beans looked sad. Well wouldn't you? A wonderfully authentic experience in some ways. A disappointingly authentic experience in others. Say Lavvy.

Ordered the Steak & Frites , presented Beauty. However, it unfortunately lacked seasoning, & or salt. May just be my personal preference. However the ambiance was magnificent. Very airy, small boutique feel, definitely has a French cafe vibe that I love.

I don't go for total cheesy food items so was unsure. Holy hell that was one of the most incredible foods in a long time. I ordered the Sirloin and it was average. Too thin a cut and a little chewy. The rest of the entrees looking good - fillet, pork, and fish - and my friends raved about them. The food was very reasonably priced. And while the wine on the menu was affordable, Mondays are BYOB with free corking.

First course salads were good but mains were really poorly put together, ingredients not fresh, and portions small. Worthy of note: On one of the dishes they ran out of the side, so offered us a choice, we said that the chef should decide, but unfortunately what they chose wasn't to our liking, so we asked for green beans to fix it, and to our surprise, were charged for it! Asked to remove the charge when the bill came, and it was done, however the manager was visibly "peeved" at the request. This is normal in other countries, and at their location in the new Fulham Reach development they are serving international clientele, so perhaps attitude adjustment is in order? Puddings were not worth even the reduced set menu prices, and one was particularly bad where cold canned pears were used. Seriously??? Why even bother having the set menu, not sure. It needs to be really good to bring people back, not make them stay away...strange... Staff is nice and welcoming. Dog friendly section is a big plus. We may give it another try in the future and order from the regular menu, to see if it is better than a budget option. Sadly, absolutely do not recommend the set menu though.

They took me to The Glass House at Kew's Station Parade - a picturesque square - the train station bustling with London commuters, on one corner an organic grocer across from a "Chemists" (we call them drug stores), and a butcher shop that features game pie, which is next to the subtle glass and wood front of The Glass House - the facade adds a dash of modernity to the tableau of Britishness of the Kew Parade. Now on to the food... AND WINE! Three courses, a HUGE wine list, menacing the Sommelier (Sorry - I'm persnickety), lovely waitstaff, a friendly General Manager, and delicious bread!!! What a treat!!! Let's start with the bread - a choice between raisin walnut or white bread. Don't fill up on bread - even if the waitstaff politely show you the basket multiole times and offer to place the warm deliciousness on your plate. How do you choose three courses from so many possible combinations? We discussed, we researched, then we chose, and decided to share bites.... We did have to resort to Google to look up a few dish items: chou farci (stuffed cabbage); lardo di Colonnata (mmmm lard - bacon's flavorful fatty cousin); and cime di rapa (Broccoli Rabe) Starters: Each plate was elegant and the flavors were wonderful, but the most beautiful plate of the day was HRC#1's Seared Orkney scallops, delica pumpkin, coco nibs, lime and watercress dressing (I've added pictures) - I was so visually stunned that I don't remember the taste. HRC#1 devoured it though.... which is a testament to the deliciousness. RC#1's Duck breast with bok choy, wasabi, teriyaki and grapefruit was intense, and the duck was so tender - it was a great start. I am a fan of eating things that have been hunted, so rounding out our starters was a succulent Rabbit ballotine rolled in pancetta, Dijon mustard, caramelised kohlrabi and lovage - yes,it may have been Bambi's Thumper served with the garden greens that had been nibbling on - but it was so delicious - with Italian bacon (pancetta) and the subtle bright earthiness of dijon mustard. The lovage really added to the dish with a fresh subtle crispness that offset the velvet richness of the rabbit. Wine: AKA where I showed off by torturing the sommelier... This is a Michelin listed restaurant - the wine library is extensive. Overwhelming for even for me. I wanted something from the Rhône - and was tempted to pick a Viognier - but why not have the professionals make a recommendation... he started off with an American Syrah - NOPE said the loud American (me), next he suggested a French Syrah - NOPE said I. I wanted a lighter wine. Then he suggested some blends - Syrah/Viognier - NOPE ... now even I was wondering "why Syrah???". Then he turned the page and uttered the word Gigondas - that ticked all the right boxes - Red, Rhône and really yummy! A bottle of Domaine des Pasquiers `14 - a black Grenache and Syrah blend that was fermented in concrete tanks (no oak) it was perfect! And a win/win the sommelier finally found a Syrah blend that I was going to agree with! Main Courses: HRC#1' s Cornbury estate fallow deer, roasted salisfy, pine, red cabbage and juniper was so good. The juniper was subtle, and I wanted to steal all of his red cabbage. RC#1 and I were back and forth talking about the Suffolk pork shoulder, chou farci, black garlic, cep croustade (spectacular flavour) and poached cranberries - the pork was amazing - long cooked and melt in your mouth, and the stuffed cabbage (chou farci) was a tight, flavorful comfort food. I went for fish: Roasted halibut, harissa, chorizo, confit red pepper, black quinoa and corn sauce. Even though I could not taste the chorizo and could not identify the vegetable (grilled bok choy?) I am still thinking about the corn sauce. It is wrong to lick your plate in polite company - so I didn't. But needles to say, Love, love, loved it. Dessert: You won't over eat at the glass house. The portion sizes are perfect, and they pack a wallop of taste. HRC#1's Passion fruit meringue, coconut ice cream and caramelised mango was lovely. I only tasted (did not eat all of) RC#1's Warm apple and pecan brioche with ginger ice cream, and the ginger ice cream is so intense - it was the best flavor of the night. I went for a classic Dark chocolate mousse, and milk ice cream yummy. Perfect way to end a terrific meal with 2.5 of my favorite people in the world! TL;DR: Relaxed atmosphere with formal service. Seasonal, delicious food with great staff and an extensive wine list. Expensive but totally worth it!
