I would have given Leaf 5 stars had it not been for the unprofessionalism, non-responsiveness, and detached Smith Street location in Carroll Gardens. One of the physicians is clueless, they'll refuse to see you if you're 15 minutes late. My son had a sick visitt and needed to see the doc, asap. Due to transit issues, he was slightly past the schedule max. They refused to see him even though he was visible not feeling well. Mind you, it was the end of the day for them. I called my mother who lives nearby and she brought him back there and the doctor refused to come out to talk about it. Last week, a request for a referral was emailed to them, they responded that the request would be forwarded to the authorizations team. Yesterday (6 days later), I get a call from the doc we requested the referral for. They don't see the authorization (appointment is today). I immediately emailed the office (it was after 5). It's 9:58, no response. They don't pick up the phone. I called the Adams Street office and they took care of it immediately, since nothing was entered into the system. I've had experiences with 3 locations. LIC and Adams Street has been great. Smith Street is a no go. read more

You will call to speak to a doctor and no matter how small your issue, they will demand you come in, so they can bill you. This so-called doctor's office (actually: start-up) cares only about their bottom line, not about you as a person, a human being. I've had nothing but good experiences with the folks at Leaf. The providers I've seen are kind, attentive, and empathetic, and the administrative staff have always been friendly and efficient. That said, there's a lot of turnover here. In less than three years, I've had to switch my primary care provider three times because my current PCP is leaving the practice or taking on a different role. I understand that it's nothing personal, but it is disruptive to have to constantly build rapport with a new doctor and I do wonder if there is an underlying dysfunction or a problem with the company culture. read more

Both my husband and I have thyroid conditions, which we communicated clearly to Dr. Chu. Expecting a thorough examination and comprehensive thyroid panel, we were disappointed with the cursory physical examination and subsequent lab work that only included TSH levels. I debated seeing a doctor for my sore throat since I don't have insurance and would need to pay out of pocket. Ultimately, I decided to go to check for strep to avoid spreading it to my household and determine if antibiotics were necessary. Unfortunately, I saw Dr. Cross, whose bedside manner left much to be desired. He was cold, dismissive, and rude throughout my visit. After informing me that my strep test was negative and my tonsils were fine, he noted my sinuses were inflamed and attributed it to a common cold, flu, COVID, or allergies (which I already know I have). He recommended I take flu and COVID tests. When I asked about the cost, since I was paying out of pocket, he seemed annoyed, threw his hands up, and said, "I don't do billing. Go back to the waiting room and ask the front desk." This felt dismissive and unhelpful, especially given my financial concerns. When I pointed out that a positive result for either virus would not change the treatment plan (rest and fluids), he kept pushing for the tests. Thankfully, the nurse was kind enough to check the prices for me: $200 for the COVID test and $100 for the flu test. I declined both due to the cost. Dr. Cross was visibly annoyed again. At checkout, I was shocked to find my visit cost $350! The women at the front desk repeatedly apologized, explaining that Dr. Cross had escalated the billing code for my visit to the maximum level (a Level 4 charge). This felt retaliatory and unjustified for a 20-minute visit where he spent mere seconds examining my throat. I'm aware my visit could have cost at least $100 less if not for this. Dr. Cross showed no empathy or regard for my financial situation, callously suggesting $300 worth of unnecessary tests. Saying "I don't do billing" while pushing costly tests felt heartless and callous. I won't be returning to Dr. Cross. If you need care, you're better off at urgent care. The only reason I'd revisit this office is to see my wonderful dentist, who is caring and kind. I truly miss Dr. Maza--her departure is such a loss. The offices are nice but I would say they are focused on billing as much as possible. My most recent visit was for my annual physical. I wanted to speak to the doctor about my finger that had been swollen without a reason (ie no injury or cut) but was told I would need to book a separate sick visit for my concern. I could understand if my issue was an illness. But a randomly swollen finger is connected to my overall health. I will be finding a new clinic. read more

I've been coming to Leaf Medical for three years and have seen a few different providers. While I didn't have a particularly special or amazing experience, previously, I was happy to keep coming back prior to the visit I had today. The experience I had with Dr. Cross left me confused and it was clear he had decided an opinion before listening to me. He cut off most of my sentences in the following exchange. It started with me asking the nurse if we could make an adjustment to the exam based on my medical history. Dr Cross: this came up at your last appointment and I don't want it happening every year. Me: I didn't see you last year, I'm not sure what you mean? Dr. Cross: I saw you two years ago, we can't give you special treatment but you can see other providers if you would prefer not see me. Me: I have seen other providers who aren't here anymore and they also didn't listen to my concern. Dr Cross: Well that isn't the reason they don't work here anymore. Me: Ok, I didn't think it was. I didn't want to make this a problem, I just wanted to explain and make sure you understood my concern. Dr Cross: We can reschedule you for another time with someone else. Me: I originally scheduled this time with another provider and the office called to let me know they weren't available anymore. This is the time I have available. Dr Cross: You understand how that makes me feel to hear that you don't want to see me? The exchange was very bizarre and I was wearing a paper gown while we had it which made me feel very vulnerable. I wasn't concerned for my safety in any way, I just felt completely misunderstood and like the doctor came in to the room wanting to make this an issue. The doctor then proceeded to refer me to a psychiatrist without me mentioning any mental health concerns, which felt like he was indirectly calling me crazy. I've never felt so disrespected in any other personal or professional situation before. I'm baffled by the experience. read more

Terribly disorganized. They want to push everything to internet scheduling but they're not set up for it. I opted to schedule my bloodwork by phone and their operators failed to mention I'd need an additional appointment before getting bloodwork (despite an earlier annual checkup a few months ago), then told me they wouldn't charge me for the additional checkup, but when I confirmed that with the Dr he said, true, we'll charge your insurance. It would be nice if they understood that not everyone has insurance that picks up every bill. They also neglected to mention that I should fast before bloodwork. All in all, at least an hour of my day wasted, but at least they maintain their mill of "efficiency". read more

I've had a few appointments with him where he's been rude/dismissive, rushed the visit, and made me feel stupid by the end of it. I've only seen him a few times when my normal doctor, Dr. Sunwoo, doesn't have appointment slots open but after having a few experiences with his bedside manor I'm now seeing why Dr. Cross always has available appointments. I feel scammed by coming to Leaf Medical. I do not recommend coming here, and I will continue to advise my neighbors and fellow community members to go elsewhere. Here's what happened: I scheduled an appointment with Dr. Mazza for a check-up, but beforehand, the office requested my insurance information to ensure I was covered. I had actually booked through ZocDoc, where you're able to filter doctors by the insurance they accept. Apparently, both of those "checks and balances" failed because my insurance was rejected. Unfortunately, I only found out after Leaf Medical billed me and after they submitted for every lab test under the sun. And I do not kid when I say they ran EVERY test they could for no reason (I didn't have any symptoms and am very healthy), including but not limited to: - Free T4 - you don't do this unless the TSH is abnormal; otherwise, the patient ends up paying significantly more. What I am most frustrated about is the fact that no one told me 1) all of the different things that would be tested, 2) the costs of each test, and 3) that my insurance wasn't going to cover any of it. Best practices are to let a patient know if anything is going to be paid out of pocket so they can opt out - so I'm not sure where the gap is here. Because of Leaf Medical's lack of competence and inability to act in good faith, I now have Collections Notices from Labcorp for $1,600+ out of pocket. This is ridiculous, and Leaf Medical's billing department has been of little help. They claimed they were resolving this with Labcorp, but Labcorp told me Leaf Medical hasn't contacted them since JULY. What a joke. Even my former doctor and nurse back in California agree that Leaf Medical acted improperly. read more

Leaf Medical was previously run as a good practice. I was going for years. Recently they have a number of new Doctors and employees and the practice has gotten significantly worse. I would hope my primary care physicians would care about their patients, but now the practice is run as a sweatshop. They make no time for their patients, you will be lucky to speak to a Doctor for more than a couple minutes before they are out the door to see a new patient. They want the easy 5 minute checkup where the PA is able to do most of the work. They don't want the difficult business, so they make no time for it. If you're hoping to establish a relationship with a practice over CityMD visits, this is not the place. The worst part of their service is their lack of attention to any unforeseen appointment, good luck having a medical issue and trying to make an appointment less than a week out. They offer telehealth as a convenient option for their scheduling challenges, but they won't actually do anything there. If you have a minor medical issue they will not make time for you and will point you in the direction of an emergency room or CityMd. I've had 3 medical issues in the last year, none of which rose to the risk of needing to go to an emergency room, but needed attention and they were not able to see me for at least a week. Instead, there I was at CityMD. I would hope a medical practice is there for when you need them most, but that is not how Leaf operates. They want to make money on checkups and send you somewhere else when you need them. read more

I love Leaf Medical and Dr. Sunwoo. My coworker/friend recommended that I go to her since I was looking for a new general practitioner in 2016 and I've been coming here ever since. This is a concierge medical office - appointments are made on ZocDoc (or you can call the office), the office has modern decor and iPads, and patients can review their blood test results and all doctor's comments on the patient portal. I travel all the way from Dyker Heights to see Dr. Sunwoo for my appointments which is a hike (about $17 Uber ride each way) but I definitely save time by going here because I'm always taken at my appointment time. Another reason why I switched general practitioners is because my previous doctor could never see me when I was actually sick. I was tired of being told to come in the following week because he was overbooked. I have not had that experience here. If I call with a concern, I generally get an appointment within the next 2 days. With that being said, I'm not sure Sunwoo is accepting new patients but there is another doctor, Valerie Gross, who I believe is taking new patients. I recommended another coworker to Leaf Medical and now Dr. Gross is her general practitioner. Dr. Gross is also a gynecologist for those looking for one as well. The office also has a dentist and pediatrics. A one stop shop for all of your medical needs. The DUMBO location is convenient for those living or working in the city. For those who live further out into Brooklyn, the Uber ride is worth it. Note: the office is only open on Saturdays to those who have a certain type of membership. I tried to apply for this once but I was told they are at capacity so look to schedule your appointments during the week. read more

Dr. Gross and her staff have absolutely no compassion if you break their arbitrary "rules" like getting there 3 minutes after the "grace period" of 15 minutes. I had a 4pm appointment and i was running late from work. I emailed the doctor's "urgent" email at 3:45 while I was getting a car from work in Queens to say I would arrive at 4:15. No response. I get in the door at 4:18, and am told I can't see the doctor WHO IS IN THE BUILDING ANYWAY. I was told I could reschedule. Why would I re-schedule and trust this so-called doctor with my health? Her and her staff couldn't even communicate with me as I tried to let them know about a problem. **If you have urgent health concerns, you should know the staff doesn't seem to check the "urgent" email very often. The receptionist seemed surprised to find my email from 33 minutes earlier. What if your child was sick? Is 33 minutes or more OK for you to wait? ** PS I made an appointment with a new doctor. My health is too important to trust to amateurs like Dr. Gross and her staff. Sometimes this city makes you late to things, but you should be able to have open communication about it with professionals. Not these people. PPS I didn't even get in to this whole other thing about getting this doctor to fill out ONE SINGLE PIECE OF PAPER that took TWO WEEKS OF FOLLOW UP. Never again. read more

As others have noted, avoid Dr. Cross if you are a woman seeking treatment for anything vaguely in the arena of women's health. Aside from his bedside manner being awful, he was visibly anxious and made uninformed assessments that were clearly wrong to anyone with a general knowledge of women's anatomy and how it works. If you cannot view women as humans equally deserving of calm and thorough medical care, you have no business being a doctor. Other experiences here are fine. Dr. Sunwoo is a good doctor who I trust to make the right decisions about my health. She is very clinical, which I appreciate, but I do think that there could be a general improvement in emotional intelligence when asking particularly fraught questions while gathering information - i.e. around why someone may have gained weight, why a close family member recently passed, patient diet, etc. I found myself feeling like a kid answering test questions wrong. I haven't personally encountered the billing/customer services issues documented in other reviews, but know a number of people who have. The primary care options in Brooklyn are pretty bleak, and Leaf so far has been the best option that I've found - but is far from perfect. read more

I am appalled to read some of these reviews. If a doctor is completely booked and you are more than 15 min late, are they supposed to make the other patient who was on time wait? I welcome their 15 min grace period because that allows me to see the doctor timely. I have always had a fantastic experience at Leaf Medical. I have no problems scheduling appointments and Caty at the front office has always been so accommodating. The doctors are great! I have seen Dr. Sunwoo and Dr. Cross and have always found them very through in my examinations. I also take my son to see Dr. Dachman who was always takes her time during our visits and always addresses any concerns that I may have and puts me at ease. She is also very responsive on the patient portal and submitted vaccinations records immediately which I needed for my son's school. I recently had an appointment with Dr. Cross and left feeling terrible and uncomfortable. I expect my primary doctor to have patience and empathy for their patients, but unfortunately he made me feel the opposite. I asked a few clarification questions on whether a type of testing would be included in the same bloodwork sample, he gave me the same stern answer over and over and made me feel like I was wasting his time. Also my BMI was slightly under, he immediately suggested I should cut back my exercise routine and implied I might have some sort of eating disorder - without even wanting discuss other factors like nutrition and supplement intake, etc. There are other examples during my short 30min visits that made me feel uncomfortable and stupid - his behavior was straight up dismissive, cold and condescending. Dr. Gellis was a wonderful doctor, but unfortunately she left the practice now. Front desk is very unfriendly and incapable. I showed up for my 12:30pm appointment and was told by receptions that she made a typo in my confirmation email and that my appointment was really at 12:25pm. Since I'm now 5 minutes late they need to reschedule me. Upsetting, because a) at 12.30 I was technically still within the 5 minutes grace period and b) it was their mistake to send me the wrong appointment time in the first place. Very baffling that this is their customer service approach and I will just go to another GP in the area moving forward. read more

a minute ago NEW Dr. CROSS is perhaps the worse preventative physician that I've been to. He has a disrespectful tone and attitude, acts like you're wasting his time (even though it's less than 5 mins), and most importantly lacks good medical judgement. During my physical, he told me I don't need to monitor my cholesterol for the next 4 years because it's a "waste of time and utility". I had to adamantly request him check my cholesterol during my physical so if there was an elevation I could adjust my diet and exercise. No other doctor is my life told me this. Isn't this what Preventative check up is for - to find things in advance? He also told me to ignore my prior doctors feedback on an issue he noticed with my blood work - minimizing the extent of the possible issue. He should not be in the PREVENTATIVE healthcare industry. Separately, during a sick visit he could not swap me correctly when testing for strep throat (clearly missed the area), he did not give me steroids on first visit and had to request it in a follow up. He was borderline disrespectful I almost walked out the office. Reading other comments, it seems to have happened to many. AVOID THIS DOCTOR. The staff at the dumbo location are also not attentive. Very disappointing. Other Leaf locations and doctors are better. Avoid the Dumbo location. It is truly low tier. read more

I've been going to Leaf Medical for years, and love the space, location, the space is clean, modern installations, and the check-in and post-visit follow-up is efficient (online scheduling, secure access to exams and records online, prompt reminders, etc). Also I never had to wait more than a few minutes -- which is a big plus if you value your own time. The staff is excellent, positive, respectful, and the doctors are sharp and great bedtime manners -- Dr. Sunwoo in particular is fantastic. Strongly recommended. (edit: I'm appalled by some of the comments here complaining of their policy of rescheduling appointments if you're late more than 15min. For me this is a BIG PLUS; I'd rather go to a practice that respects their patients' time, rather than one that tries to accommodate a few latecomers, and ends up delaying EVERY PATIENT after that for the rest of the day. I left my longtime PCP for Leaf, seduced by the super clean office and wealthy Brooklyn vibe. They connected me with Dr. Campbell Cross who I saw maybe 4 times in 5 years. I kept returning because I didn't think I had a better option, but this guy is simply awful! He's misdiagnosed me twice (I eventually went elsewhere for a 2nd opinion both times and was effectively treated by the other doctor). He's also extremely condescending and the worst listener I've ever encountered - bordering on gaslighting. I don't want to disclose any recent examples but here's a funny/harmless one: During the intake process, he asked a bunch of health history/health practice questions (standard practice). One of the questions was, "Do you use a helmet when you ride a bike?" I answered emphatically, "Absolutely, because I didn't 30 years ago, was hit by a car, and had to have brain surgery." All he apparently heard was something different than "yes" or "no," interpreted it to be an argumentative response, and replied, "I ask you this question because as a physician I deem it important information. If you want to be a patient at this practice, you need to simply answer me and not argue with me." The second time he misdiagnosed me was last week. Now I'm back with my previous (and longtime) PCP in a shabby-but-clean storefront office on 5th avenue. read more

Clean office and quick/easy appointment scheduling. Thing that really turned me off was the requirement to strip naked for a physical? Have gotten physical every year for 30 years and can't remember being told to get naked before I've even met the doctor! I asked Dr Cross (once I finally met him) why I needed to strip and put on a robe for a physical. He crassly responded "because it's my office" looool. He then proceeded to use a stethoscope to check my lungs and that was basically it. No need to strip naked and put on a gown. The nurses were great and friendly. Dr Cross seemed like he needed an attitude adjustment. Would probably go again on the conditions I see a different doctor. read more

After seeing strong reviews here and with my insurance provider I booked an appointment with Dr. Sunwoo for an annual physical, through the Leaf website. It was confirmed via email, and then a text message 48 hours prior. On the day of my appointment, after fasting per the text message instructions and canceling a meeting, received a text 3 hours prior to appointment canceling. Called in and Cathy said "due to unforeseen scheduling conflicts Dr. Sunwoo cannot take new patients." Well, this was the whole reason Dr. Sunwoo and Leaf are rated high on Yelp and United Healthcare - as primary care providers who accept new patients. To Cathy's credit she did call my phone 3 days prior to appointment but who listens to vms? Not sure why the website let me make an appointment, the text message system confirmed it, before Dr. Sunwoo's office decided her time is more valuable than mine. I'm sure their clinical work is good and I hope this practice is able to fix its logistics, and go out of their way once in a while when they have committed to a patient. read more
