I've been going there for a few years for taxes and they were ok until this year. They sent me back my state return saying I'd get a decent refund. I got next to nothing and asked what happened. I was told the new amount was correct, but the original return they sent me and had me sign was a mistake. Not even an apology, and I'd have heard nothing from them if I hadn't asked about the difference. I'm now looking for a new accountant to do my taxes from here on out. read more

I always do my own taxes but decided to get my mom's taxes done by Lee Mandel & Associates and I couldn't be happier. I scheduled an appointment with John. I was pleasantly surprised to find that they use a secure digital file system so that I could upload files ahead of time. Very helpful! On the day of my appointment, John was able to knock out my mom's taxes in an hour or less. Thankfully her taxes are pretty straightforward, but the federal and state returns were e-filed and everything processed in a couple weeks. That was great! I would rather drive to Naperville every year in March to use Lee than use anybody else in Chicago (where I live.) If that isn't a ringing endorsement, I don't know what is. Seriously, his rates are competitive and he really knows his craft. I have never been "disappointed" with my bottom line (even when I was prepared to be disappointed.) He is also a great advisor on tax issues. I have called him with tax related questions during the year and he always returns my calls promptly and gives me thoughtful, helpful answers. Oh yeah, and did I mention he's funny too? That really helps when your approaching April 15th... If you need tax advice, call Lee. Lee Mandel has been my parents' accountant for as long as I can remember, so naturally once I became a "grown up" I sent my own taxes his way. Now, I literally know nothing on the subject, but of course that's where Lee comes in. The whole tax process at his office is really simple. My husband and I met with him this year and were in and out in like 20 minutes. He's very straightforward, personable, and funny - all which make tax season a pleasant breeze! Lee is a super hard worker and very knowledgeable in everything involving taxes. All he asks of us is to show up with our W2s and any other necessary documents and he takes care of the rest. My father used Lee Mandel for many years. He passed away in July of this year, leaving me to help my mom with her financials. In reviewing one year of returns, they missed the BASICS. 1) Missed over $7,000 in itemized deductions that were given to him in detail missing a savings of $1,000 2) Missed investment advisory fees In addition, there were many other errors in looking at one year of returns. We used Lee for our taxes and I would not recommend him. Completely disorganized, did not provide electronic withdrawal option (we had to pay by check), worse is he assumed information that caused us to have to pay a penalty later. He's a nice guy personally - but when people want their taxes done, they want a serious person that is detailed oriented. read more

We had our 2017 taxes completed by Lee; no issues. Our 2018 taxes and the estate taxes for my father have been a cluster. I brought every tax document that I had to the appointment; I was missing several documents for the estate. "Where is form x?" I don't know what that is. "Didn't the lawyer tell you that you needed that?" Last time I checked, lawyers don't handle taxes...and I checked with YOU last year on the estate taxes, and YOU never mentioned the form. Left the documents there; tax returns to be emailed to us after I bring the missing documents, which I dropped off within a week. Emailed the tax returns; the spelling of my last name was wrong (it's four letters) and different addresses (our old and new address) are mixed up and used throughout. I correct this and am told via email that he doesn't worry about spelling. Okay, so details don't matter? I have to ask for the complete packet of tax documents, including the originals that I provided to Lee - which includes the closing statement for the purchase of our house. He emails not to come in because they're too busy and that they'll mail it, then later says that I should contact the office staff about it. I arrange to pick up the documents. The staff can't find the documents so seem to assume that they mailed them. I call a couple days later as I haven't received the documents, and they ask when they were mailed. How would I know; I didn't mail them! Finally Lee says they must still be in his office after tax season. Eventually, the answer we get is that he *thinks* he must have shredded them. Gee, thanks. Glad our personal info *may* be floating out there somewhere. Not even an offer to refund the pricey half-added tax prep. STAY AWAY. read more
