At the beginning of the Civil War volunteers enlisted for service in the Confederate army, and then at the end of the war, a hospital was erected on the site during the siege of Petersburg. I was blown away at the music that was playing (not family friendly), for example one of the songs had lyrics that expressed the fact that the girl had killed her ex and she did it so she could be with someone else. Another song expressed the fact that they were demonized and hell was the place they were looking forward to going. To be honest I can't imagine why anyone would think that kind of music is appropriate for a family establishment. Just FYI the music that is being played MATTERS, both in the Spirit and in the physical realm. Outside of that the course was fun and challenging- we had a good time. Expressed myself to the management, really hope they heed a genuine concern.

When it got to level 2 (higher) I was very apprehensive about the youngest going up there, but Miciah offered to go with so that we could all get the most out of this experience. They had a tremendous amount of activities for the children, including a petting zoo. The weather was great and the grounds were filled with beautiful trees, flowers, and it's right on the water. They were collecting food for FeedMore and there were a lot of Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts there. The cost to get in is $25 per car, and $10 for a bike. It is right off of the capital trail, however, the trail does not extend to the plantation. Wish they had more kid friendly food items. But the nice food truck allowed us to buy a simple hotdog.

Eight Confederate brigades under Gen. Pierre G.T. Beauregard attacked Maj. Gen. Benjamin Butler's Army of the James. Nearly 10,000 soldiers from both sides clashed here. At the end of the severe fight, over 1,400 men were left either dead or wounded. After the battle, the Confederates constructed the Howlett Line, a series of strong defensive works from the James to the Appomattox River, effectively trapping Butler's army on the Bermuda Hundred peninsula. The church itself stood for four weeks after the battle, until it was destroyed by Parker's Virginia Battery on the Howlett Line, who were harassed by Union sharpshooters inside the church. Confederate gains at the Bermuda Hundred battles allowed Beauregard to send Brig. Gen. Robert Hoke's division to reinforce Lee's army at Cold Harbor, while Grant was reinforced with the Union Eighteenth Corps from Butler. There is a walking path through the woods. It is not smooth with a number of fallen trees and exposed roots. And of course, wildlife. I would not recommend walking here alone.
