Very solid record store with a neatly organized and large rock section. If you're new to the scene or this is your one true passionate hobby, this store as well as their staff is a good start! They have mostly rock, as expected, and a sprinkle of a lot of other genres but it's not as big or diverse as I hoped. This wasn't a big deal though and I always have a good time looking through records. There's a lot of boxes of cheap/used vinyls that you can sift through as well. The shop guy was sooo nice and friendly and gave some great recommendations to discover new music as well (Thanks for the Robin Trower recommendation). So if you're feeling experimental he'll help you out for sure. Left of the Dial is a hidden gem! What I like about this place is that it seems like they are really picky about the condition of the vinyl they accept. The covers and records are all in VG+ condition, I love that. Prices are also super reasonable for the quality of stuff they have. I wish I lived closer. Back then, it had a certain charm, and I scored some great speakers and equipment at prime prices--really felt like I was getting a deal. Bill's always been fair when it comes to pricing, and you can tell he's passionate about the record game. That said, Bill has his moments. He's approachable and cool most of the time, but there've been occasions when he's been short or brash. I get it--owning a record store isn't the corporate customer service world, and that's part of the appeal of these kinds of shops. Still, a little more of that welcoming vibe would go a long way, especially when customers come in hoping for some guidance on records, equipment, or trades. Since moving to the Orange location, the shop's definitely leveled up. The space is utilized well with live shows and events that create a great community vibe. You can see that Bill has a vision and is making it happen, which is awesome. But when it comes to the day-to-day interactions--whether it's trading goods or asking about equipment or pressings--things can feel a bit transactional. If you're like me, you'll go in, do your digging, and maybe strike a deal without expecting too much conversation or help. I get that not every shop owner is going to want to be a beacon of information or up for long discussions about records and equipment, but it's a little disappointing when you're brushed off during a genuine inquiry. I first came to this shop when it was located in Santa Ana. It was always a pain to park while there. Now, they have relocated to Orange. You can always find something here, whether it's new or used and you can do so without your wallet developing a migraine. The owner is super cool and personable. He played some power pop while I shopped here that made my ears perk up. It was an artist named Dwight Twilley. He just wanted to share local spots he likes to listen to live music, and he told us stories and offered music recommendations based on records we had picked out. I saw scads of good records at this vinyl store. The decor includes some exemplary posters and art. In particular, the print of Comic Book Guy or Jeff Albertson got a chuckle from me. I guess Comic Book Guy only likes bands I've never heard of. The print really ties the store together, in my opinion. The staff here proved most impeccable, too savvy, and quite informed. Bill, the owner/manager, might well be the friendliest and most obliging record store manager I've ever met or seen. Bill is the foil of Comic Book Guy in many respects. When I expressed interest in 45s, Bill asked one of his interns to bring out box after box of 45s; each box had the decade written on it in marker. Bill said I could take as long as I wanted, and he would charge $1 per 45. I dug through 45s for hours. Bill even test played several records I was unsure of. I narrowed my picks down to 13 records. Bill wanted $13 for them. I paid the man. The rest is music. I recommend dropping in on Left of the Dial. Dig some. Have respect for Bill and his store. He will return that respect tenfold. When I was a little Judi, I had a small record collection that I left at my mom's house when I moved away from home and sadly never saw again because she sold it! Present day: So you have no idea what joy one can get when, after picking through stacks upon stacks looking for records that match up to an ever-changing playlist in your head with 60+ years of music knowledge from the Beatles to today, and then after asking if they have anything in the backroom, the owner grabs what he has and magically albums you bought as a teenager appear! Took my little ones here for the first time to start their record collection. The place is super clean and organized, but also has a comfy vibe. You'll want to hang out here for hours. Great selection at affordable prices. Bill, the owner was beyond kind to my kids and so helpful. He pulled records from his secret collection to make sure my son got the Elton John album he wanted. He even put on some Bob Dylan and Elton John records for them, which led to an impromptu dance party. Just wanted to comment on how much I enjoyed my visit to Left Of The Dial Records. The spacious shop gives you room to flip through records and not worry about bumping into anyone else. Bill, the owner, is incredibly nice and knowledgeable about his products and music in general. I came a couple times before Bill took over and then at least once a month since he's been in charge (except during the shutdown). I come here whenever I want used vinyl in good condition. I always find great deals on my classic must-have records like Al Green, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye etc. I highly recommend their sales that are usually announced on social media! Bill is the best He's so nice and always willing to give advice and help with your vinyl/turntable related questions. This record store in downtown Santa Ana was a bit hard to find. It's very tiny, the selection is very small and prices are pretty high. Customer service is OK, this store is a good option for the area (lacking in record stores, etc), it's charming and cute. It's worth checking out if you're into music and vinyl and find yourself in the area. But don't make it a destination. read more

Alright! I saw direction arrows in a back alley downtown indicating a record shop. I just had to deviate from the norm for a peek! A little meandering and there I was, out front of the Left Dial record shop. Initially, I was the only customer but the owner greeted me immediately. I didn't have a lot of time to browse but my customary first target, "Recently Arrived" yielded two gems. The first was a heavy metal classic EP by the Phoenix thrash band (unfortunately named) Sacred Reich. "Surf Nicaragua" it's called and reflected their political criticism of the late 80s. I'm happy because my Dutch pressing only looked good but played back horribly. The other score was a punk rock number from the Subhumans, a band out of Victoria, Canada. This is most likely a reissue but well made by the French company MPO. The owner commented that metal and punk are the overwhelmingly favorite genres in town, which didn't surprise me. I'll return for sure to browse (and spend) more when time permits. The owner extended a 10% first timer discount, so that's a plus. read more
