Because I'd been with CHI/Alegent since I can remember, I decided to look at the MDs at this clinic that's practically in my back yard. I'm very glad I did. I chose Dr Jacobs because, of the doctors at the clinic, he has privileges at both Immanuel and Bergen Mercy. I thought that was pretty good. Little did I know, I'd end up with so much more. The office staff is wonderful. They're approachable, non-judgmental, and warm. The medical support staff are equally amazing. They're easy to talk to, knowledgeable, and genuinely care. I have no doubt they'd be as warm and human if I ran into them at Harold's down the street over lunch as they are in their scrubs. It's very easy to get an appointment, and they offer an on site pharmacy for those who might need it. Dr Jacobs, however. This man is the pot of gold at the end of a rainbow. It's well documented that women spend more time waiting to be diagnosed, listened to, and healed by the medical community. Dr. Jacobs is doing his best to dismantle that statistic. He's taken the time to know me as a person, not just comorbid conditions. His consults are storytelling sessions where I can be honest, without fear of judgement, and fully involved with my own care. He values that I try to be as informed as a lay person can be, but ultimately respect his opinion and expertise. My last appointment ended with a genuine, supportive smile, and a "you got this" high five. Every woman, every person, deserves to be treated like this by their medical professionals. I will be a patient here as long as they'll have me.

The PT ( Believe her name was Henneman), and proceeds to call me a he after the receptionist told her I am a girl, I corrected her because in no way form or fashion do I look like a He or presented myself as one, however instead of an an apology she said and I quote " it's because of your hair". I am black and have long locs but in no way or fashion does it disguise my gender. Again no formal apology was issued.

The facility is dated and shabby around the edges, but OK enough with an early 19th Century vibe. The toilets tend to clog up and there is not enough space for hospice unless you plan to die alone. The food is good, according to Dad. The social work staffers were cruel and rule-bound. The facility is not set up for hospice care. As Dad lay dying, clipboard toting social workers harangued Mom, speaking OVER my dying father's body, insisting on chastising her for using a "solarium" down the hall when the nurse earlier had asked Mom to leave so she could give Dad a bath. The "solarium" was not, but was the name given to a dark & decrepit unused room, furnished with four mismatched chairs and a table, at the dead end of an entire wing of vacant, unoccupied rooms. We asked what she was supposed to do? They said she was supposed to go outside and wait in the cold, that she should have known this because she should have asked for a laminated rule card that is kept hidden behind the reception desk. (Maybe. We never saw it.) It was brutal. In the final 120 minutes of life, social workers tried to order his children to leave the facility as they sat quietly around his bed. I am not joking. They said they were being "nice" by letting six people sit with Dad in his final moments, and that one had to leave. He had six surviving children and a wife. They were scornful and cruel, and said one had to leave the building on a rotating basis until he died. In the days prior, they were happy to have the 24/7 help of his children, who cared for him constantly because he could not care for himself. The nursing staff was embarrassed and disavowed the social workers. To Recap: The nurses were great. Never saw a doctor. Food was good. Facility shabby and outdated but OK except for plumbing and lack of space. The social workers were cruel. The facility cannot accommodate hospice families, yet hard-sold Mom to keep Dad there by saying the trip home for hospice care would "shorten his life".

My aunt lives in So. Dakota and was in Omaha for extensive therapy (at Madonna Rehab) following a massive stroke. Florence Home provided case services and transition therapy to ensure she returned home to a safe environment with continued care services. My aunt was on a floor that had many hospice patients. So sad! But I felt the staff took great effort to treat each person with dignity; there was genuine concern for the comfort of everyone who was there for end-of-life care, including the families. Every person employed by this organization showed compassion and respect to me, my aunt, each other, and especially the residents who actually live there. And it did not smell bad anywhere! Feel confident (in the current situation anyway!) that your loved one is in good hands at Florence Home Healthcare.
