Honestly, that smell alone had us excited to eat. The setup here is casual and easy. You order at the counter, grab a table, and they give you a number, though a lot of the food was ready so quickly that several items were handed to us almost immediately after ordering. Our group shared all kinds of things so we got to try a little bit of everything. My daughter and I split a loaded baked potato topped with pulled pork and added several sides to the table because honestly...we wanted to try it all. The fried okra was especially delicious, but truly everything we had was good. Around the table: * My dad ordered the nachos * My mom got a sweet potato along with brisket-stuffed jalapeños wrapped in bacon (which she absolutely loved) * We sampled sides galore and nobody left hungry The atmosphere is relaxed and comfortable, staff was friendly, the restaurant was clean, and service was FAST without making the experience feel rushed. This felt like exactly what good Southern BBQ should be -- flavorful, generous portions, no unnecessary fuss, and the kind of meal that makes everyone at the table happy after a long day out exploring.

The smoke aroma hits you before you open the door which is nearly always a good sign. Both of us decided on their Special Op's sandwich, which comes with a Brisket, Pulled Pork, a choice of sausage (jalapeño pineapple or four cheese), a rib and a side of beans. We each ordered a side of potato salad and we split an order of Brisket Twisters which are jalapeños stuffed with brisket and cream cheese and wrapped in bacon. Neither of us finished and both of us had to get a to-go box. Overall everything was really good. Everything was fresh, the hot foods were hot, not warm or dried out, from sitting around in a warming cabinet, for hours, and the potato salad was well chilled, not room temperature. It is things like this that I notice, and make a difference. The only thing I was not keen on was the rib. It was extremely soft almost mushy and literally falling of the bone. I know thats how many people like their ribs. I just prefer my ribs to be a little less well done and have a bit of a pull to the meat to get it off the bone, so I am not going to ding them for that. The counter where you order and get your meal is clean, bright and cheerful, the staff are all really pleasant, friendly and helpful. The dining room is fairly large and roomy, with plenty of space to relax and enjoy your food. Overall, a really good dining experience and we both agreed we would dine there again.

As we walked in, I quickly understood why the restaurant was so busy. A small family diner consisting of two rooms and a kitchen visible in the back, the Wood Shed immediately showed its charm and I felt very welcome. You seat yourself after ordering from a menu on the wall consisting of plenty of options for anyone who loves good food. I wasn't super hungry, so I got a regular brisket sandwich and a side of potato salad for under $10. I paired it with their homemade spicy BBQ sauce that was sitting at the table and it was so good!! It was very simple, like BBQ should be, so be prepared if you're looking for a finer dining experience. The restaurant had an environment that makes you feel at home, with family photos of the owners on the walls surrounded by cute and quirky barbecue themed decorations. Everyone we met was so kind and welcoming and I can't wait for the opportunity to return.

I almost thought it was closed since it was dark inside and no cars parked near the front. It was 2 hours before closing time afterall and generally it's not a good idea to eat bbq late at a restaurant. I probably wouldn't have even bisited at all, but when choosing a dinner spot I had to take into consideration my work colleague who has a very limited palette and prefers restaurants close to our hotel on business trips. I chose the 3 meat plate with fatty brisket, sausage and rib tips. At least it sounded good in theory. I added a tea and a lemon cake. Unfortunately, they didn't have banana pudding the day I visited, only on Thursdays. Brisket - I had asked for fatty brisket, but they pretty much gave me lean. I'm sure this brisket was either select or choice as there was little to no marbling, but for the price, you aren't going to get prime. 2/5 Sausage - this is a decent jalapeño sausage, although the menu does not specify it was even made with jalapeños. It is a tight fill and had a nice snap. 3/5 Rib tips - not sure why I ordered these, as you don't get much meat at all. Flavor is ok, but these are not spiced very much at all. 2/5 Mac n cheese - this was ok and has some pepper in it. Seems like it doesn't use many cheeses at all. 3/5 Turnip greens - I actually thought this may have been the best part of my meal. These were cooked just the way I like them. 4/5 Toast - every meal comes with either cornbread or toast. Since I don't eat corn bread and I like to make sandwiches, I chose the toast. You only get 1 thick slice. Pretty standard white bread. Lemon cake - this was a dense 4 -layer cake which was ok but I could only eat half of it. 3/5 Service was friendly but I felt like I had to use a lot of their bbq sauce to help the meats. Luckily their spicy sauce is actually pretty good. When the turnip greens are the best item at a bbq restaurant, that's a pretty bad sign. My colleague actually enjoyed his meal, but then again he would be happy with pre-made bbq from the grocery store. Another meal that was barely 3 stars for me.

Secondly we had to wait a few to be seated on a Friday evening. That's a good sign. We were sat within 5-10 mins. Our server (Brie) I believe was amazing. We asked her for suggestions. She was not shy and suggested the pork chops and Fish. Boy was she right! I got the catfish. I am not a huge catfish fan unless it is done right and CLEAN. Theirs is exactly that! Well seasoned and amazing! The hush puppies were hand made not frozen and were the best from a restaurant that I have had. I also. Had the baked potato, potato salad. Again easily the best I have ever had. Back to the battered and fried pork chops, unless you are able to eat enough for a family of 4 or the 1/2 portion. They were simply seasoned in a way that any chef should be proud of!! We took 3/4 home and airfares them the next day. He had the green beans with the chops and Lordy they could potentially make you slap your momma. Here's the thing. We eat out a lot and I do write a lot of reviews but this hands down was one the top 5 experiences in the last 3-4 years. This meal with drinks was only $38 before a nice cash tip on the table. I will be back again and again! I hope more people find this special place so close to Lake DeGray

First, the sauce is far too sweet and the brisket just taste old; it was super dry and my wife would not finish her sandwich. I cannot speak about other food options here beca we just tried the barbecue. Notably, the service rocked and these are just awesome people who really do care about the customer, which is important. When compared to our visit several years ago, it seems the focus on quality Q has changed and in the future, we will just drive a little further to Hot Springs for other options we really enjoy in comparison. Sorry, team. We tried.
