Today when I went in, what a total difference they were all apologetic and extremely nice and helpful. They must've been having a bad Friday.

"Dr. Lim was so cool, I sort of wish we were friends (instead of him being just some guy who stared up into my abyss). & there's none of the conversational awkwardness you get from most doctors (who tend to be bad at speaking to actual people)". When you have the full examination under anesthesia, Dr. Lim's office will also mail you a stack of color photo print outs of your insides with accompanying notes so you don't have to rely on vague descriptions of what is/ isn't abnormal up in there. I brought those to the specialist he referred me to; that person said it was helpful to have clear color photos for a change. After the surgery I wound up needing, that other specialist said my whole family should also get checked, so I convinced my sister to see Dr. Lim. She loved the guy, everything about the system & the procedure they have there (everything except for the actual butt examination, I assume) and she still mentions how much she liked him.

I see Sarah for office visits, who is amazing, although I formerly was a patient of Stephanie Deem, PA-C until she resigned in 2023. Drs. Razavi and Dr. Spiegel performed my outpatient diagnostic endoscopies at Reading Hospital on 2 separate occasions, and fellow docs Dr. Shogbesan and Dr. Farrell assisted and performed the procedures. I received excellent care here, as they took good care of me. Sarah also has excellent bedside manner and provides good advice. Doesn't rush through visits, and she is very thorough with physical exams and ordering tests. However, checkout is slow as this is a very busy office.

My appointment with Dr. Gordon was the worst experience I have ever had as a patient. My experience…read morewas the epitome of women's concerns and pain and not taken seriously in today's healthcare system. I tried to advocate for myself as the visit went on however he doubled down minimizing the symptoms I was describing and dismissing my concerns. It was to the point that I didn't want to return for a follow up visiting thinking maybe this all was in my head. During our visit he mentioned at least three times that he is a "board certified gastroenterologist." He should be embarrassed by the way he flaunts his education without providing the bare minimum in patient care. I have since seen a different provider in the practice who was wonderful- she listened and gave all my concerns careful consideration and validated how I was feeling. I will never go back to see Dr. Gordon and I will continue to encourage any family member or person I encounter to avoid him.

Little can be done to make the preparation and actual event more palatable, but at least it can be simplified and made more humane with understanding of the emotional aspects of the test, and the physical challenges associated with drinking copious amounts of vile tasting fluids, a mandatory clear liquid diet for 36 hours before the operation, and the totally unpleasant process of emptying the lower gastrointestinal tract. Ugh! Gastroenterology Group at St. Mary Medical Center does it as well as possible. They invite you to their office weeks in advance to review the process in detail. Many pages of easy to understand instructions are provided. They record insurance information, and even offer samples of the preparation meds if the patient lacks coverage for this cost. On the designated day, when the effect of starvation and voiding is at max effect, their staff is courteous and compassionate in getting the patient ready for general anesthesia and the procedure itself. Everyone was skilled, patient and trained in low key interaction. From getting into those damn surgical gowns, to setting the intravenous lines in the arm, to nestling the pillow comfortably under the head/neck as you fall asleep, to the gentle wake up back in your personal space with juice and crackers, the flow is smooth and relaxed. That Dr. Barash advised I would likely have to return in five years for another scope almost seemed an afterthought.
