A good friend of my husband's, James Hart, hosts a monthly poetry reading series here. He pulls in some great local talent, Wayne State profs, and published authors from around the country (my talented hubs included) to read their work. In addition, Zeitgeist also hosts art openings, live music, plays put on by the Abreact group (excellent and hilarious) and charity events. Most events are free or low cost, and they usually serve come cheap beer and wine out of plastic cups. It ain't fancy, but it's a fun space to enjoy the arts.

It's a little bit off the beaten path in the Eastern Market neighborhood, which, to me, adds to its artistic charm. I was happy to spend a little bit of time perusing the rest of the gallery and the staff was very kind and informative. There is a small parking lot just outside the entrance and street parking available on Russell as well. Heads up: if you use an Apple GPS to get there, it'll direct you to the back of the building, so you'll need to be one block over! Anyway, I loved my experience and I can't wait to see what other kind of exhibits rotate through here.

I'm a big fan of murals and graffiti so I'm sad to report The Alley Project is a shadow of it's…read moreformer self. I honestly don't even know if it's still a continuing venture. There used to be a lot more murals lining these alleys, as well as big freestanding panels on an empty lot. They used to have live painting events on the panels. I attended one and it was a lot of fun. There's a handful of top notch pieces here, a nice Virgin of Guadalupe, tributes to the late, great Tead and Teck, an Iges, but a lot of blank space, quickly scrawled gang graffiti and murals that are decaying and flaking off more with every day. Some of them weren't even good in the first place. There's what looks to be some kid assisted, naive, innocent looking murals, which although they don't rack up cool points I could at least appreciate for getting youth involved in something positive. Only now they're so deteriorated they just look depressing. And they give off a special kind of creepy you only get from something light hearted and childish that's fallen into serious disrepair. At least one is sporting crude graff over it. If you seriously like this kind of thing there's maybe 5 great photo ops but I wouldn't go out of my way just for this. And if you remember The Alley Project in it's heyday, you might not want to sour that memory with it's current state. But hey, maybe hit up a local taqueria, and hunt down some other local murals and graffiti and it might be worth your while. But be advised The Alley Project is no longer the epic concentration of color that it once was.

I first visited this amazing site, which dare i say rivals the Heidelberg Project, during the Detroit Design Festival. Being a graffiti and street art afficionado, i instantly fell in love with The Alley Project! Not only does this alley feature amazing murals, graffiti, and art (using the garages as the canvas) but it's the overall mission for community involvement that makes this alley art gallery pretty damn sweet and uniquely Detroit! TAP also features graffiti competitions, art installations, and rotating murals that are def worth checking out! Take a look at some of the pics i've uploaded, which gives just a glimpse into this amazing place! p.s. it's located in the alley between Avis & Falcon, but don't park in the alley, there's plenty of street parking available. p.p.s. it's in the hood, so make sure you visit TAP during daylight hours.

They had a printing workshop, a portraiture activity with Cranbrook Academy of Art, there was pumpkin painting, a skate demo, & workshop, and food trucks. All of this was complementary with an Eventbrite registration! What a pleasant surprise! The ladies that checked us into the event were very cordial. They have free street parking.

I've been bad about scrapbooking this summer as I've been busy with other activities. I kept…read moretelling myself I'd go here and check the place out and finally made it in yesterday, and I'm pretty glad I did. Scrapbook stores are few and far between these days, so sometimes you have to go a little bit out of your way to find one, especially one that you like. There's so much to love about this store I can't rave enough good things. It's not huge, but honestly, none of them are. For starters, their selections amazing in regards to paper, stickers and other items. I was super happy with the prices and selection and really got a lot done when I was here. The owner lady was running the show here and she really knows her stuff. They have an open crop area where you can bring your supplies and work on whatever projects your doing at that time. The lady said that cropping stops at 5, so keep that in mind. It's also a $10 fee which doesn't get offset regardless if you buy something or not. $10 is reasonable, as some places charge $15. I don't think they have any late night crops, but after looking at the calendar at the check out, it appears they do have regular events that you can sign up for. I love doing these especially in the winter when there's not a whole lot to do outside and the weather's poor. So, here's where I deducted a star. While this store is fabulous in a lot of ways, it lacked in others that I felt the need to discuss. For starters, they don't have a good dye cut machine here. The other two stores in the area have them, but this store seems to have one that just plain sucked. Machine was small and hard to use, the alphabet selection was sucky. I got one letter done and said to heck with this and left it for another time and place. Secondly, they don't have a photo printing machine. Ok, I know that's an expensive investment, but on top of everything else, I was like this is super annoying. Mind you, you can stop at any CVS, Walgreens, Meijer or whatever store you want to print, it just means extra time doing something that some stores do provide. I let this slide since I'm sure those machines are expensive. Thirdly, on top of a sucky dye cut machine, they don't even have a proper paper cutter. Like even the ones you used to have in school. I used to have one to carry around myself, but they aren't that great and I quit keeping one on me. Sometimes you need even lines done precisely for the sake of making the project look good. Scissors are great, but not the end all for cutting photos and paper that can be thick and heavy at times. Overall this place is really awesome and the owner has lots of cool stuff to buy. I would love to see her at least upgrade her dye cut machine to something better, and even get a decent paper cutter for general jobs. Lots of space to crop and they have decent hours. They are closed on Sundays, so make sure you stop in on a Saturday if you can. Definitely worth the time and effort to check this place out.

The one big downside to this gallery was that it was not air-conditioned on a recent warm summer…read moreday when I visited. A friend and I sweated our way through both floors of the gallery because they had some interesting pieces, but it was cooler outside in the breeze. That being said, this gallery has an eclectic selection of paintings, prints and sculptures, including some lifelike and life-size sculptures and more abstract pieces. Some of the "art" was so immersed in pop culture (a painting based on the Family Guy cartoon? Puh-leez...) that I thought it was kind of junky. However, I liked a lot of the paintings and almost all the sculptures, including some great bronze sculptures by Yuroz. The building itself is pretty cool, too. There's a glass atrium at one side where some sculptures are on display, and there's a spiral staircase up to the second floor.

BUYER BEWARE!!! Do NOT buy from these people. We were…read moretotally ripped off and lied to! to buy a very expensive ( according to them right? ), light fixture from these people sold a bill of sales and that's about all we got. We live out of state and had to have the item shipped to us. I assure you we WOULD NOT HAVE purchased an item this expensive had we been made aware it was all sales final with no returns!!! OMG!!! They won't accept returns for an item that is broken / defective and not what they said it was. "an Italian item". When we recieved the light, no paperwork, no authentication nothing but the lamp...and one of the arms to the fixture was cracked and would not hang correctly. They "had our number" once they found that we out we were out of towners....so dumb of us!!!( omg I'm just ill !) They didn't send the canopy to hang it with in the first box. ( sent later ) so I had to have my electrician run and buy one to make due until he saw the arm messed up. Once I did research on this "one of a kind "Italian" ( bulsh!) lamp that we have extra parts for in the back", I find we paid 1 1/2 times! what I could have gotten online!! I'm embarrassed and sick that we got taken as badly as we did. I put it on my Chase credit card and have been disputing it since JULY!!! These guys are fast pushy fast talking *****'s. I never want to see them or their store again and I want to warn others to stay away. They have ruined our vacation time memory and wasted so much of our time disputing this piece of crap. I'm just sick. Run away as fast as your feet can take you. It's not worth looking at one item in their rip off store. On a good note...we've bought another chandelier from a reputable company and hung it where we wanted this "junk of bad experience" to hang. Our new light fixture looks perfect and brings joy! There's my silver lining.
