Bette is an energetic,…read moreengaging, older woman, who has been working as an artist and an art instructor for over 50 years. She works in a variety of materials, and there is a fair amount of work (30+ paintings) available to see here. There were no portraits displayed when I was there, despite the fact much of her work was, and still is, as a portraitist. Be advised that this is a working studio. It's not neat, and it's not laid out like a nice gallery. And it's in a very non-descript building on a neglected section of Mack Avenue. She paints here. And holds classes here. Work happens here. The day I was at the studio, there were a couple of her students there, and they had been pupils of Ms. Prudden for years. I didn't engage in anything other than small talk with them, as I was there to look at Ms. Prudden's work with an eye towards potentially purchasing a piece, so I can't comment on the instruction part of this business. I'm assuming that if it's been happening for decades, then they must be doing something right. I'd advise calling before you get in your car and drive over - Ms. Prudden maintains a pretty active schedule, and the hours she's at the studio vary.

Definitely stop in if you're looking to support a local artist and add some new items to your house or get a gift.

There are a myriad of talented and exceptional people living in this space and creating and showing and generally making a scene in the best sense of that word. The spaces for the installations are just gorgeous. And the living spaces are so generous. It's a jewel of a foster home that nurtures artists from around the world and the folks who appreciate art in its intense and varied forms. The openings are exciting and powerful and profound. And the family is going to have a legacy like the Gettys or Guggenheims down the road--get in on the first floor of this world because you will be able to brag about having hung out here to your progeny and theirs. How lucky we are!

Since my more bohemian days as an artsy-fartsy 20-something living in a basement of a huge…read morewarehouse/art gallery, I've had bouts of nostalgia for those live-work spaces that literally make you live and BREATHE your very art. Dust, paint, fumes, sweat, tears, blood, and lord knows what else becomes part of the particulate air flow. And of course Detroit has gotten a lot of press for being the new frontier for artists, the tabula rasa for experimenters and corporate-job-evaders but I admit to not witnessing much of this. Partly because all this opportunistic real estate and art endeavors are a little too ethically problematic for my taste, so I avoid them altogether. But hey, when you need to go support someone for their MFA thesis project, you STFU and convert your reticence into acquiescence. When all is said and done, I liked this space. Then again I'm a sucker for virtually anything housed in a domestic realm that is not traditionally domestic. There's a bathroom and a kitchen and two large'ish rooms in which to mill about and wax poetic. I saw a set of stairs leading up but did not take them (as it did not seem to be open to the public for this particular exhibition). The images on the website also suggest that there are other houses and other yards/landscapes in which various artists display their work. Come summer it might be worth checking out. From what I can gather, there are no set hours here - mostly just open for gallery openings. But I overheard someone saying that you can call ahead and make an appointment to stop by (perhaps the curators/owners/proprietors also live on premises). If you're so inclined to hop on the Detroit-art-tourist train, this might be a worthwhile stop. If not, then just walk on by.

Say it's by appointment only and I will call and make an appointment. But if you're going to have a store hours you should be able to handle two customers. I wasn't even allowed to look at the frames. It was very offputting. I won't be back. There are other frame stores in the area.
