My expectations weren't much; I've lived in the Detroit metro area my entire life and had never even heard of this curiously spelled Habatat. These galleries, both stories of them far exceeded them. Let me say up front the exquisite glass works contained within these walls are far out of my price range. Base price for anything seems to be 10 grand with certain pieces going for as much as 8 or 9 times that. The few things I saw in a 4 figure price range stuck out like a sore thumb in how unimpressive they were. Something going for $6500 looked to me like it should be $650 while anything up in 5 figures had the intricacy and craftsmanship for me to see why it commanded a price of more than twice my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. So I'm essentially reviewing HG as a free museum cause that's how I looked at it. If there was a donation box that I spotted I probably would have put a fiver in it but none presented itself to me. The employee or proprietor who walked in shortly after me seemed to sense I was simply a sightseer, too, and showed no irritation with it. I think she was coming back from lunch break. I saw her out in the parking lot. So maybe she was just happy with a full belly of good food. Or had sold hundreds of thousands of dollars of glass work that morning. Most of the walls are black or very dark gray with multiple lights focused on each individual glass piece and they pop out beautifully. So many different artists represented as well. I usually try to keep track, at least somewhat, but I'm not too familiar with this medium and with the creators constantly in flux I didn't even bother trying. So go look yourself if you want to know who is behind all these shimmering delicate whats. I'd be cautious about bringing any young kids here though. I shudder to think of the damage some rugrat running around could do in the Habatat habitat. The second floor isn't as extensive as the first but I wasn't expecting it to exist in the first place and there is one spot where it provides a good overview of one of the ground floor galleries. At least a couple of rooms have white walls as the blonde lady who checked back in with me explained some of the pieces just look better with a white background. Some rooms have cubicles stacked layer upon layer with fascinating and fun multi colored glass art. Not an all day affair, unless perhaps you're an aficionado looking to drop serious ducats on multiple pieces for display and investment, but for a curiosity seeker like me you can easily while away an hour or perhaps more here. I walked out thinking that if I hit the Mega Millions I'd definitely buy a piece or three from Habatat Galleries.

This is a nice gallery but it's small and has pretty limited hours - 22 hours a week over 4 days…read moreright now. They've been around a long time and it seems like they showcase pretty old school artists here, too. The last show I attended here was for venerable Cass Corridor artist Robert Sestok. I tend to forget about this gallery, tucked back into a little storefront spot on the ground floor of a loft building. It's location and small size make it good for gallery hopping, though. Detroit Artists Market is nearby and the evening I made it to the Sestok opening here I also checked out an opening at the MOCAD. I'd also recommend checking to see when openings are as they'll likely be open later and you can see the space buzzing with people.

The shows she assembles and puts up are breathtaking.They are so clued into the spirit of Detroit and so magnificently displayed that you will walk out of them needing a fan. She is absolutely dedicated to her adopted home city and we are all the luckier for that dedication...she is a gentle, yet fierce promoter and patron of the arts...I make an effort to stop in here as often as I can. There is so much to choose from, Im sure you will find something. I bought a few pieces to make earrings to give away for the holidays. On the wall there were many groups of beads with blue and white tags on them. I noticed one that did not have the bottom clipped off and it said made is China. I guess we expected more. I did see some junk but I also saw that someone has taken the junk and madenit into art installations which I enjoyed looking at and trying to interpret. I would suggest getting out of the car and walking around. 2 odd things that occurred while visiting: 1. 3 cats circled the car in front of us and refused to move. The driver had to get out of the car and physically move them. They were not afraid of people. 2. A woman was walking around the project wearing a picture frame around her neck like it wasn't odd... It's something to experience.

If you're not familiar with The Heidelberg Project, read up on it before you visit so you can appreciate it and be knowledgeable on what you are seeing. While we were there, we were lucky enough to meet with the artist and creator, Tyree Guyton. He was so informative, so friendly, and just an all around pleasure to meet and speak with. Keep in mind that The Heidelberg Project is always in progress. Tyree is always inspired and adding to the art. Also, keep in mind that some things you may see online are no longer present. I had seen pictures of the vinyl record house and the teddy bear house and was disappointed to see they were no longer standing when I visited. I heard that they burned down. Either way, they were vacant homes which will only last for so long. The Heidelberg Project is a vital part of the Detroit art scene and is a must see for visitors!
