Still going strong now, 18 years and counting with another reputable funeral home/Cemetery combo in the Bay Area. But the best thing that ever happen to me to jump start my career as a knowledgeable funeral director /embalmer was getting my start in a family run funeral home. Even though I was not part of the family, they took me under their wing. Learned from the best in the business, a family of morticians that have been doing it for over 130 years the right way. I would not reccommend any person of color to use this Mortuary…read more I had the worst experience. Coming from out of state to plan a homegoing celebration for my aunt. The first thing I was met with was "Is there any Insurance?" How are you going to pay for this? I had only been in town for a couple of hours, not enough time to look for any paperwork. I wasnt shown a pricelist or offered condolences. While waiting for other relatives to arrive I was called several times (6) in the same day to inquire about the money for the service. The director was very rude, three a tantrum when asked if we could see a pricelist, quoted the law but couldnt produce it in writing, didnt allow us to give any input on the preparation of the body. We wanted our own hairdresser who was experienced to do her hair, she didnt wear make up but she looked artificial when we saw her. We werent allowed to view the body beforehand, we had to wait until the remains were put in the church an hour before services. I tried to speak to Mr Warco(Sr) at the church and he literally yelled and screamed that He had nothing to say to me because I upset his staff the day before by asking to view the body.I woildnt reccommend them to anyone.

We asked if they would offer the spot to a family who couldn't afford their new rates but they were not interested. So frustrating. We are not looking to do anything other than offer a grieving family a double crypt at a fraction of what they are currently charging. If you know of a family who would possibly be interested, please have them go to FB Marketplace in Follansbee, WV and research Mausoleum- Highland Hills. Calvary is the third and final of the large cemeteries in PGH that I've visited. Although it's not…read moremy favorite large cemetery in PGH (that would be Allegheny Cemetery), it's nevertheless still a strong contender. It's unique in two major respects: (1) Its location on top of a hill between the Greenfield and Hazelwood neighborhoods and (2) Its status as the largest Catholic cemetery in PGH. I've visited Calvary Cemetery twice--once about a month ago, and more recently this past Sun.--and both visits have been quite pleasant and relaxing. Like Allegheny and Homewood Cemeteries, there is a variety of different styles of gravestones and monuments, although there didn't seem to be quite as many older ones as in those cemeteries. There is also at least one large mausoleum near the entrance, but I didn't go inside to check it out. Because the cemetery is on a hill, I was hoping for an unobstructed view down to the Mon River and the surrounding neighborhoods. Unfortunately, however, vegetation from trees obstructs the views in most directions, so I was only able to see peeks down the hill. In terms of size, Calvary seems a bit smaller than the other large cemeteries in PGH, and it doesn't offer as many amenities for living visitors (benches, ponds, etc.). The one thing that's a bit strange about this cemetery is the presence of several tall microwave communications towers that overshadow it on a plot of land adjacent to the cemetery. I realize that the placement of these towers is due to the topology, and that the cemetery has no control over their placement, but they do feel out of place in this otherwise peaceful and naturally beautiful cemetery. Despite these minor shortcomings, Calvary is a great place to take a stroll and check out some cool gravestones. If you happen to be in the area and enjoy exploring cemeteries or are looking for somewhere to take a walk that's different than the usual parks, check it out!

Yesterday we had a memorial service for my father-in-law, Bruce D. Smith, at Burke Chapel in…read moreWarwood. From the very start the staff at Kepner made sure we were taken care of. -We live an hour and a half away, so they allowed us to make all of the arrangements without meeting in person. -They took care of everything: transporting the body, arranging military honours, making sure the obituary was printed, and even contacting the cemetery on our behalf. -Funerals and related services are expensive, but Kepner staff never tried to sell or upsell. When we changed our mind about purchasing an item, they were understanding and exceptionally kind. -The staff worked hard to helpful without being intrusive. We felt supported without feeling overrun. -We were offered guidance when we requested it, but when we didn't, we were allowed to set things up in the way that best worked for us. The freedom allowed us to work within the bounds of our grief and beliefs. -I know it seems small, but due to an illness that doesn't allow me to regulate heat/cold very well (I don't sweat, for instance), I became very warm. The staff adjusted the temperature settings without hesitation. I became comfortable and could focus on the service. -This is the 3rd service I've experienced at Kepner, though the 1st I've been involved in organizing. The quality and compassion are consistently high. We have even had a beloved pet cremated through Kepner, and that, too, was an experience of the same caliber. We are very thankful for the care, respect, and compassion shown to my father-in-law, to us, and to those who came for the service. It was a hard time made easier by people who really cared.

This is the funeral home my parents chose, they passed 10 years apart…read more When my mother passed, everything seemed to be going smoothly with the arrangements. They are nice people. When the obituary came out, the wrong donation foundation was listed. Some random foundation received donations. My mother looked beautiful at the viewing, makeup and hair were perfect. However, very noticeable was the fact they did not put the bra I gave them on my big busted mother. She would have been mortified! Too late to rectify that at the showing. When my father passed, the employee handling the arrangements kept saying is how he was retiring soon and all the plans he had. When the obituary came out, they failed to acknowledge that he was a veteran. I stressed this at our meeting, it was a very important aspect. Names in the obit were not listed correctly. My father was cremated, we informed that the cremains may not make it back in the 2 days until the service. Thankfully, they did. These were 2 different employees 10 years apart, not satisfied by either.

They…read moredo not want you to leave much in decorations or you may/will have some of it disposed or removed or damaged during upkeep. My brothers gravesite was a terrible mess and I tried growing grass but to little success due to geese, terribly dry summer etc. I know they later added 2 additional "pads" of grass (after my requests) and after rain it finally grew a nice thick grass. I am the one who had to spread and move the soil and added filler to all the ruts though. You have to be willing to request repairs or initial care of a gravesite. Stones will be repaired if damaged by them and you bought and had them install the stones. Or that's what I believe are the rules.

It's a terrible atrocity how this cemetery is being taken care of. We have several little dogs…read moreburied in the pet section and purchased all of the headstones through South Side Cemetery as we were told that if we purchased their stone, if any damage was caused to them, the cemetery would repair or replace. I visited my pets today and saw many of the stones in deplorable condition, including mine. We have asked the cemetery to repair in the past, several times and nothing has been done. Also the grass has not been cut in a very long time it's easily 2 ft. high. South Side Cemetery should be ashamed for not having enough respect for our pets, who were our family. Also, most of the damage done to the stones were caused by negligence from weed whacking or just lack of concern. I also feel it is a breach of contract as the contract we signed specifically stated that if any damage was done to the stones it would be repaired or replaced by the cemetery. Perhaps reaching out to the local news media will be my next step.

Marra Marshall is located in Monongahela and is surprising a beautiful building. The outside is a beautiful building and the inside is set up to allow for people to pay their respect in a comfortable atmosphere. Parking is a bit wonky as there is on street parking and a parking lot behind the building. The staff kind of direct you where to park so that they have maximum parking available. What I am going to review here is how kind the staff are to those that attend a funeral. They were really respectful and spoke in hushed tones when talking with those visiting. They were helpful in directing people where to go. When I went to leave they were empathetic to the situation. Rest easy friend.
