It has been forever since I've been in this area. As my dad celebrated 15 years being sober, I flew in for his ceremony. Understanding how important of a moment this was for him, there was no way I could miss it. The Shattuck is a staple in Boston and does so much good for the community. The programming is in abundance and there is something for everyone. My father found a community during his time in treatment at the Shattuck and they have become his tribe. To this day, as we walked in, the staff knew him by name and he has impacted them just as much as they have him. Though he is no longer in treatment at the Shattuck, he goes back to give back to those who are in programming now as he runs a group weekly. All these years later and the resources that Shattuck provides those in need is amazing. This is more than a hospital or a facility. The Shattuck is a community of individuals who care, encourage, assist, and provide a source of accountability for those who are serious. Supposedly, this is a teaching hospital duly accredited by the Joint Commission. I'm not sure of the criteria for hospital accreditation, but i think they need to lose their accreditation if its dependent upon patient safety, clinical excellence, and adherence to evidence-based practices This hospital is overseen by The Disability Law Center. They need to act aggressively and close this hospital down. The great State of Massachusetts runs this hospital through the Department of Public Health. Shame on y'all. The college associated with the Lemuel Shattuck is Tufts University. My aunt, who just passed last month, worked for Tufts for over 60 years. I've respected Tufts for years. Now, I wouldn't send my student there to get their clinicals at the Shattuck. That sets them up for failure. The hospital was built in 1954, is 70 years old, and is named after Lemuel Shattuck, a local historian, statistician, and politician who helped create the nation's first Board of Health in 1869. I'm certain he's rolling over in his grave to have his name be associated with this suboptimal health care facility. I grew up in Boston. The Shattuck was known as the worst hospital more than 50 years ago. My family member has been at this facility going on a month This past month, I've learned how low they could go. My family member is a very recent quad amputee. He was transferred here from MGH because they said he no longer required that level of care. The Lemuel Shattuck is supposed to be competent in Acute and Sub Acute care. From the moment he got there, I've had to work with the patient advocate almost daily. The issues range from mice in family member's rooms, gnats coming up from the sink in family members' room, non-adherance to basic nursing procedures and techniques, lack of professional demeanor and rudeness, leaving urinals unemptied, linoleum floor covering not glued down, etc. The few professionals that work here are outnumbered. The general attitude of staff and management is lackluster and non-empathetic, and I feel the level of care borders on the criminal. I notified DLC and DPH. DLC did respond and spoke with me. I got a letter from DPH. If you have any other options, please do not let your family member be taken to this hospital for any reason. read more

My adult son, who is autistic, was an outpatient for dental work at Shattuck. He has to be anesthetized for basic care. I was deeply impressed by the professionalism of his medical team and their care and compassion. It may be that others have had bad experiences here, or maybe they are uncomfortable being in a medical facility that treats low income people. All I can say is my son and I are grateful for the treatment he received here. read more

This place should be shut the fuck down. I find myself coming to there website, reading reviews and other personal expirences that people have endured here frequently. The same things over and over is what I read "do not send yourself or your loved ones" from those who have actually been inpatient here and previous employees and there experiences . My brother DIED here March of 2023... and there has yet to be answers on how and who was treating him. How does a fully functioning 28 year old young man walk into a place like this to receive "treatment" and die within 48 hours. I'm disgusted and the STATE should shut this place down. These so called professionals over medicate all of there patients and no one has anything to say. These director of "Bay Cove" was too busy and had another gentlemen named Michael call my family. Expressing there sympathy and how "they have a really good story and time line". There records our terrible... vitals and check ins not even accurate on there time stamps. I have been a visitor and found the Staff to be extremely kind to me. As for my significant other who is struggling with the care but seem to be adapting to the Staff inability to be comforting or helpful at times. I have received calls, "I have been on the bed pan all knight and ask for help." There is no consistency with Staffing and their duties. I know mandatory monthly training in all areas of bedside care would be beneficial to the Nursing Staff. Also, cleaning of the patient room would not hurt especially with the crisis of the pandemic. read more

If you have no choice in the matter (you're some variety of sick and incarcerated) well then you need to make WAY better life decisions. Let this hell hole be a deterrent to you continuing to make poor life choices. *Of note, I was here as an employee and I do not require any of the services this facility had to offer. Now I would like to leave a review about my stay at the Mirasol center for healing located in the building of the Shattuck. It's all female or who identify as female detox / CSS. The case workers were amazing along with the recovery advocates, they mean well. The clinical director means well and wants a beautiful program to help homeless, struggling with addiction, or transitioning out of jail/prison. My biggest concern was the nursing staff. There were a few nice nurses but a few who were not compassionate about the job position at all, just miserable to be there and took it out on us clients/patients. Especially while in ATS acute transitional services (detox phase) the nurses need to understand what is happening and how a patient will feel with withdrawal symptoms. I had two nurses who would not give me my dose of methadone because of a stupid reason while I was visibly uncomfortable, I had tk beg her and I started to cry like how degrading and humiliating is that? An hour before or an hour after scheduled med time is when you can receive your med. One nurse charged at a patient like she was going to swing on her the recovery advocate or specialist whatever her job title was had to hold the nurse back.....that was something I have never seen before in My life. The nurses aren't experienced in the detox addiction field at all and arguing with them to get your scheduled med is just totally inappropriate and needs to be looked into. The mirasol has ATS and CSS throw together along with people who come out of jail and it's court stipulated. That doesn't make sense to me. Patients should be seperated. It creates confusion, a big mess, arguing ect. Especially for ATS patients should be receiving their medications first before CSS or any other individuals who are on the floor. The ATS patients are very sick anyone who knows what detox is like but the medication schedule for ATS should be as needed , when needed, no excuses as to why the nurse can't dispense the medication because she doesn't feel like it or Is tired, mean while the ATS patient is suffering sitting in the chair waiting. People go to detox thinking they will be comfortable and I'm sorry but this place was the worst experience I've ever had. Yes detox isn't supposed to be fun, that's not what I'm getting it , I'm just saying who ever is hiring these nurses maybe they are contracted through companies I don't know but they need to fix this. You have patients who are detoxing on medical watch thrown with css who are blasting music in the common areas it's just very uncomfortable place due to the nursing issue and ats css and individuals coming out of prison all thrown together , they really need to separate them. Every other detox it's separated. Other than that the place is very clean , cute wall decorations, nice furniture they mean well and it could be a beautiful place to help woman but until they fix the nursing issue and hire experienced nurses who have worked in a detox it will always be uncomfortable. Also there was some bullying going on but what else is to expect with females, all because one individual was transgender there was bullying happening. The issue never was resolved, staff allowed the bully to remain on the floor. About to to the case workers your all awesome! Who took us out for smoke breaks in the rain, they were compassionate. Also Kat was my favorite recovery specialist or advocate she was so amazing compassionate understanding. Shout out to Georgia thank you for being compassionate. I initially came here for medical rehabilitation following a hospital stay for a serious infection. They are very good at helping me to get that under control. However the nursing staff is very lax and lazy. EVERY SINGLE TIME I ask for my pain medication they will not show up for an hour later IF IM LUCKY. The building is very old and a lot of it has security and Correctional Officers running it so the vibes I get aren't great either. read more

Called to make an appointment to go visit a patient. I've been trying to go there to go see a patient and not able to get anyone the picks up the phone to assist me. The lady that answered ( wasn't pleasant at all) the phone told me she couldn't assist me because she had an emergency to call back later. I called back and got the same lady with the same response to call back because she has an emergency and couldn't set up the appointment for me to go visit the patient. I asked her if there was anyone else that could assist me she said no. She could of set up the appointment for me to see the patient and continue to tell me to call back when all she could of done was set up the appointment. Their customer service is really bad. they need more pleasant people to work there. They don't deserve any stars at all but you can not post review without doing so. read more

What a shit hole. Ok, I was in the correctional unit for driving while suspended and since I'm on dialysis they sent me here. The nurses are seriously undertrained and can barely speak a word of English, the bathrooms smell like someone urinated all over them, the place is simply disgusting. It's a third rate hospital for poor people. Not to mention I caught an infection while I was there to the point where I had to be transferred to Brigham and Womans to get it taken care of. Yes, I did something wrong, but really didn't deserve this. Noe I had to have surgery to correct the infection I got and will have to have another surgery to fix the dialysis tube I have. Amazingly tangy barbecue chicken in the cafeteria. Very comfortable chairs and not too smelly.

My mother was a patient in the ventilator unit for a year. It was a very difficult situation for her and us, but the staff tried very hard to meet her needs and did so in a loving, considerate manner. As with every hospital, they could always use more staff, but I never saw a more hard-working, dedicated staff. The nurses and nurses aides were extremely kind to my mother which gave us great peace of mind. Respiratory therapists were always right on her floor. Nurse practitioners and doctors were always available. The physical plant certainly left a lot to be desired, but we were more concerned about the medical care. We were initially very concerned about her going to the Shattuck, but it turned out to be a good decision. Of note, my brother and I were there daily which is always a help. read more

Sectioned my wife for drug use. The place almost killed her. 3 other girls were taken to the hospital for pancreatic issues. It took gem 3 and a half hrs to call 911 for my wife. They said she was just seeking her meds when in reality her gall bladder was about to give out. It took her to falling in the hallway for them to call rapid response and it took the ambulance 30 mins to get to her. And then they never notified me when I am her emergency contact! Don't ever send anyone you love there unless you want them on the brink of death! read more

this was by far the worst "help" I have ever received- counselors are children who say they "babysit" with no experience or qualifications. NOT FOR ANY SORT OF RECOVERY- staff not qualified to handle any problem that comes through that door. I was called many derogatory terms while there- I will not list them as they are very offensive. The list can go on- then I was discharged with no explanation or completed treatment? I filled reports all the way up and no response or repercussions for the abusive derogatory staff were ever communicated to me. Not even an acknowledgment of the way I was treated It is unbelievable that it's still open and called a hospital. I was not forced to go there it was my bad choice. I was then left on the sidewalk to find a ride as I do not drive. This "Hospital" is everything but that. You would better off in third world clinic. read more

I recently had the misfortune of being a patient at the Lemeul Shattuck Hospital (I used the word "hospital" as it is part of the name but, hospital in any sense of the word, it is not). What I can't understand is why there aren't many other complaints. I figure it's because most normal people do not end up there. I was transferred on accident by a physican who prejudged me. I had an infection and one of the ways it can be caught is through IV drug use. Because my physican prescribes me Methadone for chronic pain, the hospital physician assumed I was a drug addict and transferred me to the Shattuck. I had no idea where I was going or why until I arrived. It's filthy. There are many infectuous disease floors where patients share two unsanitary bathrooms/showers. A mix of infectous patients, psychiatric patients and residents of the Shattuck Shelter all comingle outside smoking cigarettes (and marijuana), selling drugs, and begging for money. Many are high and nodding out on heroin. The nurses are all rude and not one cared about my comfort. I feel fortunate to not have caught TB or CDIFF. Many patients caught CDIFF. It's an absolute jungle. It's the poorest excuse I have ever seen for a "hospital". I can't fathom how the state allows it to call itself a hospital. I dare the AG or the Gov. of Mass. to spend one week there as a patient. I dare anyone, for that matter. I won't even begin to mention the people who dare consider themselves Dr.'s especially the Psychiatrists. I had to wonder if some were delusional escapees from the Psych ward. read more
