When I walked in I was greeted by a friendly bartender with glasses and a handlebar mustache. There were maybe 3 or 4 other people at the bar I could see. A couple more in the back patio. I waited about 20 minutes for a drink and eventually just gave up, which is frustrating when you're trying to enjoy a night out. And the one drink I did get earlier honestly looked like a sample cup. The place felt kinda dirty and weirdly quiet (before the rush)? Like super dark (which I get, dive bar) but no music or energy to balance it out. It just felt off. I've been here a few times now hoping it would hit different, but it hasn't yet. If you're the owner reading this, I'd just say plan for those post-show rushes. When the new owners took over Kelly's (the oldest bar in Hamtamck according to themselves) I was for sure expecting a redesign of the bar, the atmosphere and the quality of the burger, but to my personal joy I was happy to see for the most part changed. They fixed up a few things that really needed to be fixed, but they didn't come in and revamp the the look and feel of the bar. The pricing is still good, the bartenders are still bartendery, but most importantly the burgers are still delicious. If you are a fan of smash burgers you will not be disappointed. But our bartender, by the name of Red? What a lady. What a lady! Knowledgeable, personable, professional, and approachable. She helped us make beer and cider selections, and made some spirit and shot suggestions. And. And! She was so nice on the phone when we called to see if the joint was open, and how late it would be open. Our plan was to visit a few different places, but we just stayed here until close. And Red was a big part of why we stayed so late. Also she curated the music selection just perfectly. Great place, great people. Come and get some brew, boo!
