I was a client at Mark Daniel Barbershop for over a year and a half - and I always showed up. Earlier this week, I missed an appointment for the first time. Instead of contacting me to reschedule me for later in the evening or the next available day, their system automatically charged me $62.00 for a service I did not receive. I honestly thought it was an accidental automatic charge from their system until I received an email from a different employee writing to me using Mark's email account days later that any appointment I make will be automatically cancelled and that they would prevent me from going back if I did not reverse the dispute. I understand that barbers work on commission, but this was the first appointment I ever missed. The barber's calendar was completely booked for that day anyway so they didn't lose any money. I never purposely missed an appointment, and there was one time last year I had to cancel last minute because of a family emergency - which was months ago and I notified them 2 hours in advance that I couldn't make it - I rescheduled and went to that appointment. There's a way to handle premium clients that consistently show up, and for that reason they lost me as a client.

They all have great social media, easy to contact any of the barbers and figure out which days or what times are best even though they're walk-in only. They're also cash only so prepare for that otherwise they do have an atm in the shop if anything. I've never waited more than 10-15mins to get sat and the haircuts are quick it's no nonsense. I mean yea they have friends hanging out or music playing but it's a positive vibe. They don't bullshit and stop and start any haircuts like a lot of barbershops do. Getting side tracked with other shit going on around them. They give you all the good stuff of a higher end barbershop (and they know how to use scissors lol) but it's not overpriced. I got two people I see and whoever is ready I go to. Both are great. I think they're all good from al the pictures and heads I see coming and going from the shop.

They were able to squeeze my 16mo son in for a haircut before their next 9:30am appointment, and gosh, the female barber (didn't catch her name unfortunately) was so patient with our very upset/distressed son and gave a shockingly good, clean haircut despite my son not being still for a single second. The haircut came out to $40 total but it was well worth it, because she gave him a haircut that we wouldn't have been able to. There were three kids waiting after us so they're very popular with kids! Very clean inside too. I wish the restroom had a changing table for kiddos but their floor was very clean (lol). I've lived in Newark for about 3 years now and searched far and wide for a solid barber. NYC, Jersey City, Newark, Princeton, all over. Never returning to a barber more than twice because I am uptight and hate when I feel like barbers don't listen. For the past three years I've had a particular haircut in mind (the best example of it is if you Google French Crop) and no one has gotten it close to right. Admittedly I'm not great at describing what I want but I feel like a lot of barbers decide how they are going to cut your hair before they even ask you what you want. Zeus is the first barber to not only listen to me but to clarify what I was talking about and do it right. He did the most meticulous fade I've ever had and varied it around my head to accommodate for differences in my skull and places where the hair grows lighter. It took a while but he took his time and got it right and it's f*ckin sick. The top length is also spot on and perfectly layered. This haircut was a big change from my normal style and it's not something I would have been able to try with a lesser barber. He was super cool about it too and I think probably more excited to try it than I was lol. Beyond that this is just a nice barbershop. Clean, chill, great service at every level.
