I walked into West 50th Barber Shop randomly while I was on the phone with a friend. I'm glad that randomly I selected this barber shop. The shop is clean, friendly, straightforward and fun. I was a walk-in and did not have an appointment. Once they finished the clients they were working with they immediately serviced me. My barber Orlando was a amazing! He was courteous, professional, friendly but stern about his business. He definitely handled business as my haircut came out pristine and clean. I'd say it made me look 10 years younger. *** Updated my review from 1 star to 2 because the owner quickly responded with a sincere apology. My original review below: Sam cut my hair. And I'm not ever going back. Here's why: 1. Clearly told Sam I want my sides one clipper guide size longer than his own and that I didn't want the top really cut at all. Told him "just the tips" of my top, as I scissored hair between my fingers to show him barely a quarter inch length. And what haircut did he give me? Basically cut all my hair down to nothing all over my entire head, while leaving only my bangs. I tried to stop him when he made his first deep cut into the top of my hair, but it was too late. He tried to explain to me that he was right. No, I'm right. Told him how I wanted it, but he didn't listen or didn't care. (See pic) 2. Clearly told Sam I wanted my back "squared off." And instead he gave me some rounded cut with an uneven line across my neck. Looks so amateur. (See pic) 3. Customer before me was from Japan and his English wasn't that great. He and Sam had a little language barrier, so the haircut wasn't exactly what the Japanese guy wanted. That's understandable. When the Japanese guy tried to explain how he wanted his hair fixed after the initial cut, Sam asked him "Are you Spanish?...Because Spanish guys always want free extra haircuts." The Japanese guy didn't know he was being insulted, but a customer in the other barber's chair made a comment like, "wow that's a bad stereotype." And after the Japanese guy left, Sam made fun him loudly to the waiting customers. He joked that the Japanese guy was "a nobody." Pretty damn rude. Japanese are like the coolest, most loyal people on earth, Sam would be lucky to have them waiting for his services. read more

Very disappointed that I have to write this review but after 3 different occasions of the same mistreatment , I can no longer use Gabriel to cut my hair. The issue is that Gabriel doesn't care about anyone else's time but his own. I've waited in cue only to have him allow his friends and buddies to jump the line and make the rest of us wait. It's rude once but 3 separate occasions if downright offensive. So if you are going for a quick haircut - go somewhere else bc chances are you will be waiting for at-least 1-1.5 hours depending on cue and if you are unfortunate to be disregarded as a paying client like I was. The first time I went here for a hot towel shave, the barber cut my face and left a large gash (which caused a scar) -- and didn't even apologize. The second time (with a different barber), the pain from the shave was unbearable, and I had to leave even though there were still large patches of hair on my face. Never again. read more

Following the recommendation from a friend and voraciously scouring reviews here, today I went to Russ at Gabriels Touch. I am extremely picky with my haircuts. I have a lot of hair but it's thin and blonde, so the hairdresser must consider that otherwise I walk out looking like Moby or a lawnmower attacked me. I love my cut! Russ was patient, attentive, took off less at first for me to evaluate, and even trimmed my bushy eyebrows! I walked out with the haircut I wanted all for $25 (scissor cuts are $5 more). This place is homophobic. The owner asked me if I was gay during my first visit, which I think is very forward, and when I said yes he smirked and said something in Russian to the barber next to him. I brushed it off. But then today I overheard him talking to a friend in the barber chair who was describing someone under his breath (couldn't hear what but it didnt sound flattering). The owner reacted by saying really loudly "aw man! That guy sounds so gay! He's a gay guy!" Laughing hysterically. Now this may not be hateful but it certainly didn't make me feel comfortable or welcome as a gay person. Aside from the above, I've always found the owner to be unfriendly, impolite and pushy. He repeatedly urged me to give him a 5 star Yelp review and would spend most of his time cutting my hair complaining about negative Yelp reviews he got. He is also rough with his hands and often would hurt my scalp the way he combed or used clippers. Overall, Gabriel has good skills and gives good cuts but he is impolite and not gay friendly. No haircut is worth that. After hearing his mocking reaction to a gay person, I promptly got up and left even though I had been waiting for 20 min. read more

DO NOT GO HERE! Never written a bad review in my life but I have to today. I've been going here for years and the regular barber is great. Someone else there today. I asked for a #2 buzz and he proceeded to shave the back of my head right to the scalp. When I told him that wasn't right, the guy just started screaming at me and wouldn't stop. I said I was leaving and he screamed for me to pay him with a half a shaved head. I walked out with him yelling out the door. I've come to Gabriel for my weekly hair cut for well over a year now, and highly recommend him. Always provides a solid fade/touch up.

As I settled down on the chair, the barber working on the customer next to me drops his comb on the hairy, dirty floor. He picks it up, brushes it off with a dirty rag, and runs it right back through the customer's hair. Kind of disgusting. I know this isn't a $150/head salon, but at least dunk the damn thing in the blue tank of barbicide. I considered leaving, but convinced myself not to be such a princess. Unfortunately, American Gangster was on TV, and my barber could not keep his eyes off the screen. I couldn't care less about his inattention if his work didn't suffer for it, but my haircut ended up being pretty piss-poor. Sloppy and completely uneven. He didn't blow dry the loose hair out or offer any product at the end. I considered asking him to even out the right side, but I've seen American Gangster and knew that Denzel was about to get pretty violent--figured he'd probably be equally distracted during my requested touch-up. I left. I'll have to make a trip down to Chelsea Garden Barbershop tomorrow for some repairs. I'm a pretty low-maintenance guy when it comes to my 'do. I try to keep it under $25--I quit going to Chelsea Barber's when they jacked up their prices. It's been a struggle to find a decent barber in Hell's Kitchen. read more

I went, sat in line a guy put me in a chair and cut my hair. It's a first come first serve parlor. Cheap, quick, and professional. Great experience. I've been back and will keep going back. I discovered this place over a year ago and I have to tell you, I'm really picky about who I trust with my hair, but I LOVE Gabriel's work and I am so happy to show off my hair cut each time I get it. I was spoiled by high-end New York City hair stylists who really understand the subtleties of how to cut men's. I wanted something more stylish, edgier, but still professional.
