    The final cut
    Justin D.

I walked into West 50th Barber Shop randomly while I was on the phone with a friend. I'm glad that randomly I selected this barber shop. The shop is clean, friendly, straightforward and fun. I was a walk-in and did not have an appointment. Once they finished the clients they were working with they immediately serviced me. My barber Orlando was a amazing! He was courteous, professional, friendly but stern about his business. He definitely handled business as my haircut came out pristine and clean. I'd say it made me look 10 years younger. He took his time but not too long and I'll definitely be coming back to him in two weeks. I met the owner of the shop Russel and he was very friendly and told me a lot of great stories before I left. I love this place and "illlll be back" like the Terminator

Told Sam don't cut top, but he cut everything down to my scalp except my bangs

*** Updated my review from 1 star to 2 because the owner quickly responded with a sincere apology. My original review below: Sam cut my hair. And I'm not ever going back. Here's why: 1. Clearly told Sam I want my sides one clipper guide size longer than his own and that I didn't want the top really cut at all. Told him "just the tips" of my top, as I scissored hair between my fingers to show him barely a quarter inch length. And what haircut did he give me? Basically cut all my hair down to nothing all over my entire head, while leaving only my bangs. I tried to stop him when he made his first deep cut into the top of my hair, but it was too late. He tried to explain to me that he was right. No, I'm right. Told him how I wanted it, but he didn't listen or didn't care. (See pic) 2. Clearly told Sam I wanted my back "squared off." And instead he gave me some rounded cut with an uneven line across my neck. Looks so amateur. (See pic) 3. Customer before me was from Japan and his English wasn't that great. He and Sam had a little language barrier, so the haircut wasn't exactly what the Japanese guy wanted. That's understandable. When the Japanese guy tried to explain how he wanted his hair fixed after the initial cut, Sam asked him "Are you Spanish?...Because Spanish guys always want free extra haircuts." The Japanese guy didn't know he was being insulted, but a customer in the other barber's chair made a comment like, "wow that's a bad stereotype." And after the Japanese guy left, Sam made fun him loudly to the waiting customers. He joked that the Japanese guy was "a nobody." Pretty damn rude. Japanese are like the coolest, most loyal people on earth, Sam would be lucky to have them waiting for his services.

I got a pretty good haircut here on a walk in basis. No complaints. They took their time, and had plenty of conversations in Russian. If you are an out of towner it is easy enough to get a quick trim here.

Are you opening any time soon? My son desperately needs a haircut. You guys are significantly superior to any other barber shop.

Oka took an extraordinary amount of time talking to me and making sure to cut my hair as I expected. He was terrific. And so was Lake the individual who washed my hair. But most of those glowing reviews are pre-covid. I don't know if a lot of their stylists left but there's a notable lack of reviews post-covid. They're kind and the space feels lux and quiet. Problem is communication, went multiple times feeling very whelmed and changed stylist every time. After my third time I think I'm done, I've shown pictures and discussed with them what I wanted but they can never seem to get it right. Instead they default to a generic taper short off the sides and medium top cut, but then why tell me you can do the cut or even have experience with it? Is it my head shape? Face? Am I too ugly? Communicate that to me before you decide to just ignore the conversation we had and just free style. It's frustrating because I am growing out my hair for this cut and they do what they want. I don't want to be rude and stop you mid cut but then why am I paying so much just to be left unsatisfied? Most of the men leaving the place have the same exact cut. Anything longer than a short to medium cut is a no go, those cuts look clean and nice. Kept going in with shoulder length wavy hair just to get butchered every time.

One jackass who charges $100 for a haircut talked about how a real barber (such as himself of course) only does 4 haircuts an hour. Really 4 haircuts an hour? That's 15 minutes each, which after getting in and out of the chair and prepping and combing equals about 10 minutes. You might as well go to supercuts to get that sort of crap haircut. Which brings me to Jerry's! If you are in the city and want to spend 1/3 of what some hipster doofus barber will charge you then check out Jerry's! I used to go to Jerry's consistently when I first started working in midtown but started going to a place in jersey near where I lived at the time, though I still pop over once in a while. If you are in midtown and want a good haircut, this is the place (great if you work in midtown and the boss is giving you crap about your shaggy hair). Mostly older barbers who can do a variety of styles (though I doubt they do shaggy hipster/bieber cuts). They give a very thorough, careful haircut. Usually lasts at least 25 minutes, since they actually take their time and go over it more than once to make sure it is perfect. It is pricey around $30ish I believe, but hey, its in midtown. And of course they use a straight razor, and less importantly but still really cool, they have an ancient hand cranked hot towel machine! P.S. Its very difficult to find (buried in the basement) so ask for directions at one of the rock center info desks located at each entrance.
