I've eaten a ton of fish n chips in my life, this is one of the best ice ever had. Burdocks is very popular, as evidenced by a huge board with the names of all the celebrities who have eaten there. It's just a counter so it is primarily for take out but there is small area to stand and eat if it is raining or whatever the case may be. Burdocks is exactly what you think of when you imagine an English/Irish fish n chips stand. The fish comes with salt and vinegar, if you choose. I recommend salt and extra vinegar. Which seems to be the way the locals often order it. If you are a tourist and you go to this location (and If the whether is nice, that's a big if) walk downhill Wherburgh/Bride st. About half a block (so walk out of burdocks and take a left), then cut through that alley/street and wall towards (along the back) of Dublin castle towards the guard station and archway. Keep walking and you will come out to a really nice courtyard/park/garden. The perfect place to enjoy your fish. You will thank me. The reason I took one star off is because there is often bones in the fish. A small price to pay for a wonderful meal. Also I assume the bones are in there because the fish was hurried from sea to plate in the interest of freshness, so I can live with it. I also put on 15 pounds during my summer in Dublin, and Burdocks was no doubt a key factor. If you love fish and chips you need to eat here before you die. Ahh Burdocks... I don't know is it the que out the door & down the street or the smell that wafts out pulling you in as you go by but there's something that just draws me to this place. Though I don't believe it's quite as good as it used to be when they wrapped your chips in old newspaper it's still definitely one of the best chippers in Dublin & definitely the best one in the city centre. The fish is HUGE and good. Crispy fried and tender inside. This is like a a whole cod filet and it will fill you up. Service was fast so be prepared to give your order. The queue space is small so only the person ordering should step in and only come inside when you know own the order for your party. The combined bag with the fish and chips are pretty weighty, so don't send your typical 12 year old daughter in expecting her to carry four orders out. In the end one full order was too much for this lad. I finished the fish and gave half the chips to the pigeons in the park by St. Patrick's Cathedral. The only feedback we would have it that the chips could be cooked more. Theses are very soft, without any browning. Maybe I won't be too harsh since this may be the local preference but I think US tourists would prefer them more well done. read more

Overrated if you ask me. Fish was nice and fresh - but bland, since it evidently was not seasoned before it was battered. Chips were a bit soggy. But check it out if you want to experience the 'Dublin Institution' as your guidebook recommends. This place will change your life. The best fish and chips I've had anywhere in the world. The fish, the batter, and the fries were all perfect. Just what one would expect for a business that has been serving fish and chips for over a hundred years. You can get it to go and nosh outside of Christ Church Catedral. Their hours can be strange so be sure to check before you go. Also, all Leo Burdocks are not created equal. The one in Temple Bar is OK, but as everyone says (including a Dubliner we met in Krakow), "it just isn't the same as the one next to Christ Church." read more

Stopped at Leo's for a late night snack and wow did we love it. Huge serving of fish and chips was doused to perfection in vinegar and wrapped tightly in paper to make it back to the hotel. We couldn't eat it fast enough. Perfectly cooked. A lot of people stand on the sidewalk outside and eat since there is no seating. When people say this is the best fish and chips in Dublin they aren't kidding. We came late too and were expecting to get the soggy leftovers but it was a perfect late night meal! read more

A great fish and chips shop needs to have good throughput, and Leo Burdock has it. The fish is constantly being battered and fried. Nice crunchy breading, fresh fish, rich, fried-in-animal-fat flavor, it's got it all. Too bad the chips were pretty lousy, mealy and undercooked. Still, if you need a quick snack or are hankering for fried fish, Leo Burdock is an excellent choice. My two pence. T'was a traditional rainy autumn November and the wind spat flecks of cold drizzle at my rosey red cheeks- the only exposed skin visible beneath my marvelously morbid marine anorak. The year was 1950 and I had a hankering for some fried spuds which had implanted their selling power into our bleak and wounded Dublin city culture. Mr. Burdock handed me a hefty shovel full in a newspaper with all the crispy bits a growing lad could ask for. The grease illuminated in the lightning outside (a wella wella wella umph!) "Tell me more tell me more" you say? It was one of a kind. I did'nt put up a fight. A warm hearty meal for a lad with a big heart for good food. When I had finished, I looked down at the grease stained newspaper and read the headline- "We won the war, the Brits are going home". It was a good day for everyone. The famine was most definitely over and we had reclaimed the north through passive resistance. Now in 2014, The experience has not changed even the slightest... My boyfriend and I were looking for a good place to eat fish and chips as soon as we arrived in Dublin. The night we arrived we decided to take a stroll when we stopped to dine at Beshoff's ( a recommended spot on our guide book). Well...it was awful...there was no flavor and the chips were a tasteless as well. We were sooooo very disappointed and thought we would find a decent place for fish and chips in Dublin. A couple days later we took another stroll and I had this pocket map and it mentioned Leo Burdock. After an afternoon in Temple Bar we took a 10 minute walk and found this hole in the wall and it was the best thing we did all day because the fish and chips there were phenomenal!!! My bf had the regular cod chips and I went with the smoked cod. They wrapped in paper with a load of deliciously warm chips and we were set to roll. The only downside is that there's nowhere to sit so we walked down Lord Edward and sat in front of what I believe was a municipal building. The second time we visited we sat behind Christ Church, but were hounded by pigeons. But all in all...this place was one of the highlights of our trip, especially because there weren't too many places we found with good food. Even if this place was in Chicago or anywhere in the states we'd recommend it. Great portions, great taste...can't go wrong with that! read more

This is a 3.5 star situation, but I will give it a 4 on the merits of the food alone. This is my first fish 'n chips experience in Dublin and I have to say, I was impressed! This seems like an authentic place that keeps things simple to hold true to what they know they do well. Pros: -Cod was fresh, light and came with a HUGE piece! -Chips were plentiful and salted! I haven't seen the best execution of salt in Dublin, so it is worth mentioning. -Like I said, authentic. They don't mess around with the trends because they know their food is good! Admirable. Cons: -No seating! I'm still not sure how restaurants get away with this in a place like Dublin. We took our fish down to the park at St. Patricks Cathedral and I put my umbrella over the food to protect it as we stood in the misty rain to eat. Not a bad lunch scene, but would have probably tasted better in a dry building where it was served fresh. -A bit pricier than I was expecting for a take away place, especially compared to other meals I have had in Dublin, but it won't break the bank. Best in where? Ok, it was tasty. The portion was huge. I liked the decidedly simple "wrap it in paper and go find a place to eat it" approach. It was memorable, and good, but incredibly greasy. The chips weren't, but my fish was. It's expected, but was a bit much for my palate. I won't likely eat there again, but I can now say that I did - and the list on the wall and website would suggest that anyone famous that has walked by has stopped and gotten a slab of hot, fried fish and chips. My first ever fish and chips in Dublin! I asked what the best thing to order was and he said to get the Fresh Cod and Chips (~€11). When I received my food, it felt like I was holding a tiny baby--that's how big and heavy it was. This place is takeaway only, so my friends and I went over to Christ Church Cathedral to eat our lunch. When I opened my package, I was a little disappointed because my fries were a little mushy--and I love fries, so my expectations were a little high. The cod was alright. I asked for salt and vinegar, but there wasn't enough on it to give it enough flavor. Perhaps I'll come back and ask for different sauces, rather than sticking to traditional. This got highly reviewed, and it seemed we should probably partake in some traditional fish and chips. The area around this chippie was interesting and fun to walk through. However there was literally nothing impressive about the meal we got. The cost for the meal was quite high. Granted the piece of cod was very large, I didn't find the food particularly tasty. There are only so many ways to prepare traditional fish and chips. Leo Burdock doesn't let you down. I love a good fish, and unlike some other reviewers, found mine to be flavorful, crispy on the outside, not too greasy/oily, and super hot, which was perfect given we were taking it on a night tour. Leo Burdock's came highly recommended by a coworker of mine who touted that they were supposedly the "best." Unfortunately, I have to be 100% honest and say I was definitely underwhelmed. We knew it was take away and there was no seating, so that wasn't an issue. The fish and chips however, were what disappointed us. It was just SO heavy and fatty tasting. The batter was just overwhelmingly bad-for-me-feeling. As in, it didn't feel like a deliciously fried indulgence, it felt like I should just stop and walk away from the food while I was ahead. Also, because they wrap it up when you take-away, it got really soggy. Saw the mixed reviews before we went, but we thought we would still give it a try. Maybe we arrived at a wrong time, with no queues in the front, we got our order right away, meaning the fish and chips were both pre-made. Obviously, having sat under the light in the racks for a certain amount of time, our cod was barely warm, soggy, and so were the chips. Plus, the food tasted quite bland. Portion was huge, but we couldn't finish it even with three people sharing, as it was not good at all. From reading the sign that boasts nearly 100 years in service, one would assume this place is a legendary spot in Dublin. One also gets this vibe from the majority of review written on yelp. Sadly, the sign and reviews on yelp make this place seem much better than it really is - in my opinion. The fish and chips meal simply consist of a large heap of sloppy fried fish and an even larger heap of fries. When I eat fish and chips, I expect a hearty, deep-fried flavor. This flavor comes from the fish, and the chips complement. At Burdock's, the fries tasted better than the fish. That's a bad sign. The fish crumbled in a lame heap of bland mush. Even with the extra vinegar and salt, the fish and chips here tasted painfully mediocre and flavorless. So, I would say that in this situation reputation purports quality. I'm going to be honest and say, I've already found the best chipper in Ireland, and while it might not be the oldest, it has divine chips. Leo Burdock's chips - I am afraid to say - are nothing to write home about. They're OK, they taste like chips and look like chips, so as far as doing what they say on the tin, they pass the standard mark. However given the amount of times Dubliners have gone into raptures over these chips, I am sorely disappointed. Where's the oomph or kick I was waiting for? It's nowhere because there is none. They're just chips and there's very little of them. Then there's the chicken pieces, which I ordered because I was starving, and I got four tiny - barely see them with a magnifying glass, pieces. Cut your losses short, and wander into any other run of the mill chippers in Dublin, you'll get more chips for your money, and probably a better tasting bag of chips too. read more

This chipper saved a few tourist girls after too many pints at the Guiness Storehouse! We found it in walking distance tucked away in an alley near Christchurch Cathedral. We squeezed in the line and came up pretty quickly. We asked for the classic fish (cod) and chips for €9 to split and ended up with more than enough. Beware of buying one for yourself since the portions are huge! Once we grabbed and fast fish we walked over behind The cathedral to sit along the grass wall. I guess this wasn't a secret since we saw about 10 other people with their own fish and chips chowing down there also. Definitely not diet food but if you're looking for fish that melts in your mouth and fries/chips with the perfect amount of vinegar this is the place! I'll have to go back asap! read more
