Wow... took a taxi from Clontarff Castle for dinner and to experience Howth. Originally planned on splitting the fish and chips, but ultimately we each chose an entree. My husband and the fish pie, which arrived steamy, creamy and fishy in the best way. I ordered the butternut squash tortellini, which was homemade and possibly one of the best dishes I've had in my life, with flavorful oil, firm pasta and creamy sweet filling. Service was fast and friendly, and while the harbour was dark and drizzly, we enjoyed our venture out from Dublin. I have a thing for mushy peas, and those were also fantastic! Popped into The Brass Monkey for dinner with a mate, The place itself has a grand atmosphere, kinda cozy and lively at the same time. The staff were sound, no complaints there, and we didn't have to wait too long for a seat which was nice. We ordered the seafood platter (lobster, shrimp, and crab wontons) and a classic fish and chips. Look, the food looked decent and came out hot, but the taste didn't really match the price tag. Bit on the bland side if I'm honest, and definitely felt overpriced for what we got. Now here's where it gets a bit dodgy the next morning, I wasn't feeling too well. Thankfully, we were able to snag one of the last outdoor seats at The Brass Monkey. The white sangria was fine - refreshing, but needed a bit more flavor. The food was great! Stopped in after walking the cliff trail. It was packed in the middle of the day, but I quickly got a table. The chowder came out hot and smooth. It was a large bowl. During a day trip to Howth, we stepped in for dinner before heading back into the city. We were there to hike Howth Head so I'll admit we were a little dressed down for dinner, but they still happily sat us. We shared a small calamari and the seafood chowder to start and while both were delicious, the chowder was out of this world! Maybe I'm used to thick, heavy American chowder, but this chowder was so light and fresh. I could've been perfectly happily with a big bowl of it, which I was shocked to see it didn't come in an entree size. Had it come in a larger size, I probably would've just ordered that for my main entree. But I'm kind of glad it didn't because I ordered the salmon that was the special of the week. It came with samphire, potatoes and a creamy chorizo sauce. Oh my gosh it was amazing! I had never had samphire before and let me tell you it's my new favorite veggie. I love capers and it reminded me of the freshness and snap of a string bean with the delicious brine of a caper. My boyfriend got the halibut that was the special of the week. To be honest with you, I can't remember what was on his halibut, I was too entranced by my own meal. I did try his and it was really good as well and he seemed happy. I can't praise Brass Monkey enough, from the service to the ambiance to the food. I'm only sad it's 4,000 miles away from me, lol Guess I'll have to figure out a way to recreate our meal here in the States until next time! read more

The oysters are ordered in sets of 6 or 12. They are shucked to order and very fresh. The seafood platter was huge and is meant for two but there is enough for more people to join in. I am an American sushi chef from California, and this seafood wine bar satisfied our craving for sea food. Any seafood restaurant has to have a source of fresh fish. And this place sits right on the doc! The fishing village has fisherman that bring in fresh catches to this place! So the taste is amazing! The place is well decorated with a warm Christmassy feeling! We ordered the Trio ( pork belly, crab for an appetizer) and the seafood platter which had a variety of fresh fish baked, broiled in a tin foil. I came here with some friends, and it happened to be sunny, so we decided to try these nice little tables outside. Given that I come from a sunny place, I am a sucker for outdoor seating. UNBELIEVABLE. I stumbled into this place FIVE years ago and remembered that this was one of the best seafood meals I have ever had. We ended up at this place on "super tuesday", where the entire A LA Cart menu is HALF OFF... We ordered the most fantastic lunch: their homemade chowder, mussels, fish and chips, grilled hake, smokies AND the berry dessert. Every single thing was fantastic. I am still dreaming about all of the food we consumed... The customer service was also unparalleled. They told us we could sit in the window seat if we vacated by 330, they had a reservation coming in. We had MORE than enough time to enjoy our lunch, but after two bottles of wine and a trillion food orders, we were pressing for time. They approached us and told us we could stay as long as we want, and they were going to reseat their reservation at a different table. I loved the staff as much as the food. read more

If you're visiting Dublin, why not spend six euro and take the train to Howth? It's a 30 minute ride and a very worthwhile escape from the chaos of the city. Howth is filled with terrific restaurants and a few nice places to shop. Additionally, for a mere 10 Euros we took a 30+ minute boat ride around the island. We were treated to some fantastic views and met a few curious sea lions and seals! The Brass Monkey was a very nice place to sit down and relax with a drink and some delicious, fresh seafood. We had some fresh oysters and fresh salmon. The salmon was sushi grade. It melted in my mouth. The oysters we equally as good. Of all the great places to eat lining the road out to the sea, The Brass Monkey was a terrific choice. It was also cool that we were amongst a handful of locals that are regulars there. I had such a crave for seafood... I Swear to God! And we passed the Brass Monkey! And said to myself "I've been here!, long time ago when I was young and ignorant..." Let's go! I got the goats cheese as starter, had uhmm!! Beautiful texture and came with sweet nuts on top, beetroot sauce, salad and two little pieces of sweet pilled pears. It all sound too sweet but the mixture and the contrast of those flavours were like a bomb in my mouth! Delicious!!! Then I tried the seafood platter... And wow! I was the happiest woman in the world. I've had never tried ray before, I didn't find much flavour but was ok! It also came with salmon, white fish, squid, salad, fries... As I've I said before, It would have been easier if I had 3 stomachs like the cow... Couldn't finish but The plate had to go... And I was crying... But happy because I really enjoyed my time! Probably the best place in Howth for a great sit down seafood experience. The stew was unforgettable. We had the special for our main course which was broiled salmon, broiled cod, with fried cod, calamari, and chips. It was a meal for two and then some. I often eat in Howth but hadn't made it to the Brass Monkey yet but now I think it will be a regular! We arrived very late on a Sunday evening and even though the kitchen had more or less closed the waitress accommodated us with a nice table and some options we could have. The decor is lovely with fairy lights all over the windows and a relaxed atmosphere. I can't fault the service- attentive, kind and fast! We had calamari to start and probably the best calamari I've had in ages! My partner and I both had the cod special (€22) which was served with baby potatoes, veg, pine nuts and a lovely sauce, very fresh. The cost of the wine did bump the overall cost of the bill a bit but it was a lovely treat. Overall it seems to have a great menu with fish taking the bulk space and even on a Sunday night the place was buzzing. Looking forward to going back! read more
