Some local beaches are starting to charge, but this one still offers PLENTY of free parking. In addition, there are multiple playgrounds - including a pirate galleon from when the park was established during my childhood, a THOUSAND years ago! It doesn't have the zip line that caused me to smash my leg into the concrete side, leaving a still visible scar 1,000 years later, which is probably for the best, but a kinder/gentler playground with more modern amenities for today's active child. There is also an expansive grass area, where you will find many local pups bounding about with joy. On the grassy areas, BBQs! Also a protected, man made beach cove with an easy enter, small to no wave water entry. Lots of families prefer to set up their space on the green grass and then make their way to the beach, which is an ideal way to have your picnic sand free! A foot shower is also available to rinse the beach off before you settle back onto your blanket. Plenty of benches, tables and a bathroom that is, if I'm being completely honest, acceptable, but could use an upgrade. If you're more active, make your way to the public dock to launch your kayak, paddle board, etc. I've also seen people fishing from this dock and launching remote control boats - so cute! If you haven't brought your own board or boat, there is a rental kiosk handily available. This is also a great park to stroll through. A clear path goes from the parking lot to the tip of the Ventura Harbor entrance, known as Soter Point, where a beautiful sculpture stands. Bummer. When I went to the NPS visitor center, the ranger told me that if I wanted to see the ocean conditions myself, there was a viewing platform in the center a few floors up. Those waves looked super choppy! I was secretly glad the trip got cancelled as I tend to get motion sick... Otherwise, the rangers were very patient and helpful with all of my inquiries. It turns out that there used to be a flight service to two of the islands, but this was discontinued, and so the only way to get the the Channel Islands National Park is via boat.

The first red flag was that the company did not provide a phone number, making it difficult to get help or clarification when we needed it. We followed their directions exactly and arrived 30 minutes early. We parked in the designated lot as instructed by the person at the gate, but our guide never came to meet us. We eventually had to drive into the park ourselves and locate the guide, who was parked on the side of the road. There was no clear signage identifying the company or where customers were supposed to check in. Once we finally found the guide, the intake process took approximately 40 minutes. After all of that, we paid approximately $700 for a ride that lasted only about 20 minutes. We were also promised pictures from the experience, but no pictures were ever provided. What made the experience even worse was the customer service afterward. Rather than taking responsibility for the poor communication, unclear instructions, lack of signage, and failure to provide what was promised, the company provided little to no accountability. For the amount of money we spent, this was absolutely not the experience we expected. Poor communication, poor organization, inadequate customer service, and failure to deliver what was promised. Based on our experience, I would not recommend this company and would strongly encourage others to consider other ATV companies before booking.

My two brothers and I spent the long Thanksgiving weekend in Solvang and decided to end our trip…read morewith an ATV tour in the Santa Barbara mountains before heading back to L.A. Best decision ever! Although getting to the meeting point was a bit scary as we drove 15 mph through winding roads next to steep cliffs, the views were nice and the ATV experience was totally worth it! We gave ourselves plenty of time to get lost and it took us about 1.5 hours to get to the checkpoint. Luckily Google Maps was on the entire time and we even had an hour to kill on top of the mountain before our 12:30pm appointment. (Also had screenshots of the directions in case we lost service). Upon arrival, we met with the two girls who were wearing face masks and face shields so we felt safe. They had all the sanitizing stuff. They checked us all in, gave us each a mesh covering for our head, pairs of gloves, goggles and helmets. They offered different insurance plans (just like a rental car company), each ranging in price. Then, they walked us over to the ATVs where Jorge was our tour guide. He asked us if we've ever rode before and taught us how to use the automatic ATVs and made us feel comfortable and safe. (Throttle was on the right handle bar and brakes on the left. Second brake was a foot pedal). We drove on wide and narrow trails, over some fun rocky areas, kicking up lots of dust, and he took photos of us the entire time. This was a great family bonding experience and we're all still talking about how fun it was and want to do it again. Know Before You Go: It gets dusty so wear clothes and closed toe shoes that you're ok getting dirty. Give yourself plenty of time to drive to the location because the last thing you want to do is rush through the scary mountain roads. 10/10 would definitely do this again!

You probably already knew that Pickleball is America's Fastest Growing Sport…read more I mean, doesn't it seem like everyone you know plays Pickleball these days? It's damn near ubiquitous. Even the E-Trade Baby plays Pickleball. It's like you can't go 24 hours without hearing someone yammering on about Pickleball. Pickleball pickleball pickleball. You're thinking, if everyone doesn't shut the hell up about Pickleball I swear I'm gonna punch someone! But they never shut up. And of course, as good as it might feel, you can't just go around punching people. So, you need to find a way to channel that aggression in a positive way. If you feel you need to whack the hell out of something, Pickleball might just be the activity you are looking for. Strange that Pickleball might be both the cause of and solution for your frustration. Of course there's much more to the game than just whacking a ball with a paddle, but the whacking part is so satisfying. A great way to let off a little steam. Ventura Parks and Recreation offers Introduction to Pickleball classes here at Juanamaria Park. Currently there are Level 1 Introductory classes on Monday nights from 6:30-7:30 pm, and on Tuesdays from 9 to 10 am. And there is a Level 2 Introductory class on Thursday mornings from 9-10. The classes run for four weeks at a time, and cost $100 for the four lessons. Legend has it that Tennis was played here at Juanamaria Park back in the olden days. You can still see the lines here that define a tennis court, but I've never seen anyone actually playing tennis. From the size of their huge ass courts, I'm guessing tennis players must've been about 8 or 10 feet tall. Just in case any Jurassic era Tennis players show up, there are signs posted to keep them away from Pickleball players. The division of court time seems equitable, but one wonders why time is blocked out for a game that's not even played anymore. And you know, there's more to Juanamaria Park than just Pickleball and Tennis. There is also a Basketball Court, for example. And there is a huge grass covered field just waiting for someone with a frisbee to show up. Plus they have those cool charcoal grills. Bring some briquettes and something to grill and you could put together a real good time here. There are bathrooms too, but I've never checked them out. I have no idea when they are open or how clean they are. But if I had to guess, I'd say they're pretty well maintained. The whole park seems very well-maintained. Juanamaria Park is where I learned to play Pickleball. It's a great little neighborhood park. I give it my wholehearted recommendation. Mikey C says: Zero Zero Two

If you are thinking about renting this facility for a extended party, my rental was 4-11pm, there's a few things you should know... 1. It's an amazing room. Truly. 70 people fit nicely with enough room for a DJ. The park is available for your super young guests and that provides bonus points Definitely... BUT..... 2. You won't need to work out at the gym the day of your party because you'll be required to move gymnastic equipment before and after your party. The bright side? You'll work some muscles!! :) The downside? You'll pay an extra 40 mins to move the stuff which means 1 hour added to your rental price. Sadly while your moving the equipment, you'll realize you paid THEM to move THEIR equipment. Gee whiz. On Top of that you will be sweeping and cleaning the faculty as well, because it might be dirty. With that said, there's a chance you'll be sweaty at the start of your party... Decorating still needs to be done after all! Also when you're super sore the next day...you'll know why. ;) 2. While your moving all the equipment and cleaning, before and after your party, you'll realize what an AMAZING boss you are!! Why you ask? Because you paid a Barranca Vista worker(mandatory) $ 15.00 an hour to NOT help you sweep the room, to NOT help dump trashes at the end of your party. Are they there to help you move the equipment? NAH...they're there just to make sure you move it properly and put it back exactly as you found it, THAT'S it. If you need anything you'll find them sitting in the office surfing the net. Not a bad gig right? You'll also realize you're the best boss ever because you'll also provide dinner for your new employee!! While I would have offered, I didn't need to because she joined the family line for tacos. Again..amazing Boss! :) All of this amazing fun for $700 dollars PLUS a 250.00 dollar deposit. Not bad right? Disclaimer: I'm a non-resident, so residents pay less. Congrats to you. As I said in the beginning, I didn't think things through when I was told about the equipment. I own that. I just feel compelled to help prospective party renters go in with eyes wide open, give personal experience to help them make a well informed decision on whether it's worth the money. Of course everyone's experience is different. Our party was a blast and we'll be back for sure, but it will be a free park party for us. :)

Ventura is changing though, prices at "Antique" stores are outrageous now. Better to go to the Thrift stores, you can find a few of the same items for lots less. On one trip we were looking for a covered candy dish. Antique store wanted $30 - Thrift store - $1 Woohoo! It seems like they are pushing out alot of the more eclectic places and putting in chains like Jersey Mikes and foo-foo chi-chi clothing boutiques. Let's hope the book stores never go.
