We booked a trip to Cachuma through Rich awhile ago. I'm finally getting around to writing this review. In the past, I had the crappie fishing figured out at Cachuma. But the rainy winters caused the water level to rise 50', so the techniques and locations we used to fish were no longer productive. I wanted to go out with a professional guide that knew how to fish the new Cachuma water levels. I called Rich and specifically asked if the crappie were biting at Cachuma. He assured me that they were and his guide was very familiar with the new conditions. My fishing buddy and I had high hopes. We met the guide at the launch ramp and after a short discussion, we learned that the crappie had not been biting for almost a year. The guide was also planning on fishing the same locations and using the same techniques we always used. Even though I was very disappointed and annoyed that I had paid $475 based upon my conversation with Rich, we decided we were there and should go out anyway. The guide is the only reason I rated this two stars. He was very pleasant and seemed to understand why we were less than pleased with the situation. We ended up with one crappie for the day. I just had a trip yesterday and I'm beyond blown away. First let me start with this... Yes, I caught lots of fish but that has nothing to do with my rating or review. A guide can only take you to the fish, they can't make them bite... Booking: I had a very easy time booking with Rich. He was friendly, flexible and really worked with me to get me on the water and in a timeframe that worked for me. The trip: INCREDIBLE! My guide was friendly, knowledgeable, accommodating and just an overall good guy. I honestly didn't count but I think I landed around 12-15 bass. We kept the 4 biggest in his live well so I could get some photos at the end (all were released). The entire trip is up to you. I specifically wanted to fish bass and just wanted to have fun. They will tailor your trip to what YOU want though. All in all, there is not a better service out there. I can't wait to get back out there again! read more

I was clear that I wanted to do striper fishing at any lake in socal that Richard felt was best at the moment.. My father and I paid $475 and spent half the day fishing for small and large mouth bass which I had no desire to do.. We caught not one fish all day.. We didn't catch much but it wasn't for lack of Rich's trying; being the middle of summer didn't help. He had everything we needed and was super friendly, patient, and indulgent of my 11yr old's random conversations. It was a little pricey compared to going off-shore fishing with one of the group charters, but not overly so and it was a waaaaay better experience. Not even close. And the price you pay is what you pay. There's none of the nickle-and-diming that goes on with the charters. What a day! We went out on the Pontoon with a group of Boy Scouts ages 12 - 14. Free Klinshaw was the Capt and he did an insane job! He worked hard to find fish and a couple the boys even caught their 1st fish of their lives! A trip to remember! Rich Tauber: Exemplary Customer Service & Guidesmanship How can I say this? Rich is a master of both crafts! Both crafts? Yes, his customer service and his professional abilities as a guide. My wife and I booked a charter with Rich on Castaic Lake on Monday 7/8, and from the initial booking to our texts leading up to our trip, his communication was prompt, concise, and friendly. We arrived for our trip a bit early, and watched Rich arrived on time, and quickly dispatch his boat into the water for our 7am departure from the marina. Before taking off in his well-kept 2010 Phoenix 721 Bass Boat, he provided us with life jackets, all the safety information, and a tour of the compartments of his vessel. I also learned he has a Pontoon Boat which holds up to 8 people for those really hot days. He also advised us as we took off we wouldn't be going very fast, which was very comforting for my wife. We never had a single discussion about any concerns we may have had; he knew instinctively as new customers how to put us at ease. Genius! After a couple of minutes of travel, we began trolling for some striped bass on our way to some largemouth areas. As we trolled, Rich began explaining how to read the fish finders on both the front and rear of his boat. This meant a lot to me because I've never been on a bass boat, and always wondered how professional anglers on television decided what they were looking at. His explanations always got the point across succinctly. We arrived at our first destination and he explained the differences between fishing a drop shot worm versus a Senko. This is the second thing I learned in a matter of 15-20 minutes with Rich; he explained how to give the Senko slack as it drops in order to let it assume its falling worm impersonation. Once it hits bottom after 20 seconds, slowly raise your rod up to detect if a bass has inhaled your bait. After a few casts, it worked to perfection!! I've been fishing it wrong for the last 5 years. We caught bass on both the Senko and the drop shot. What was even more impressive was the way he was able to reach my wife on how to cast her setup. After several years of me trying and several guides later, he was the first to get through to her. Hallelujah! I was proud of them both. Wouldn't you know he put her on a 5lb bass which is her first ever largemouth as well as her personal best? Her pic even made it up on his site. True Professional!! In between casts, Rich's Customer Relationship Management was tremendous as he was able to reach us on topics that mattered most. My wife is a teacher and I was beyond impressed on his seamless transition from fishing and basketball, to scenarios only a teacher could respond to. As a former Lyft & Uber driver, I thought I was awesome in relating to my customers. Rich made me go back to the drawing board in order to improve my customer service. That's just how good he is. We caught a few more bass and decided to call it a day. Quite frankly, after the 5lber and all the knowledge he gave me, I knew he was always going to be our go to freshwater guide moving forward. Rich, I sincerely hope you are able to make the connection we spoke of and get that project off the ground. Even with the tough conditions we fished hard and didn't quit... and what I was able to learn from him is worth more than any fish we didn't catch.
