In the course of remodeling my condo I've accumulated a short "A-list" of go-to contractors. Leon Hodgson has probably been the guy I've used the most. If you've ever undertaken a remodeling project, you've probably come to realize that there always seems to be more work than you anticipated. Replacing a bathroom cabinet turns into, "A new sink would sure look nice with my new cabinet!", which then turns into, "A new tiled backsplash would really make the sink and cabinet look great!", and on, and on... Leon is the man for all of these jobs. At my current (still incomplete) stage, he has replaced my fiberglass shower with a cast-iron tub, installed a gorgeous custom tile surround with built-in niche and mosaic accents, hung and trimmed all interior and exterior doors, installed all baseboards, made adjustments to cabinets so my new range fits perfectly, plumbed my kitchen & bath sinks, installed new dishwasher & over-range microwave, built 2 custom closet systems, built a custom enclosure for a new stackable washer/dryer and will be installing my new super-low-energy windows. Whew. The two reasons I've continued to hire him for all of these jobs are the high quality work he does and his extremely reasonable prices. On top of all this, he cleans up after each job, he offers helpful suggestions & cost-saving tips, and he's just a pleasant & friendly guy to have around. I had an add-on room with sliding glass doors that were in bad shape... I called Leon to fix the room. Leon took out the glass doors, walled it up and added French doors. He painted the inside and outside. We came up with some last minute changes of adding exterior lights on the new wall. He did that without any issues and even added an exterior electricity socket for us. He worked around my schedule and was able to knock everything out in less than 4 days. His pricing is also very low, you cannot ask for more. I will have Leon come out again in august to do some bathroom tile work and tub replacement. I called Leon several times to get him to come check out why are garage light quit working. After emailing him a few times he called to say he could come out and take a look at the light. As he was going into our garage he said "did i tell you about my service fee? that his service call fee was $200 plus extra if he needed supplies. Long story short, it turned out to be the light bulb--he did first check the switch, and his helper did have to stand on the top rung of the ladder. (We thought it must be electrical since all four bulbs went out simultaneously.) But still, they were here 20 minutes, and essentially changed light bulbs.He's a friendly guy and all, but I will not be calling him again. $200 is not a "reasonable" charge, in my book. Maybe the other reviewers were billed on a different basis. Had I known in advance his service call is $200, I'd have found someone else. Update: after reading your comment below, Leon, I don't feel any different. If you wanted to make it right even now, you could instead of protesting "you should have said something maybe I could have made you a deal". You charged $200 for 20 minutes. Thats $600/hour. You knew when you collected payment it was $200 for having changed some light bulbs. For those reviewers who say on here you're a great guy and charge such reasonable prices. People need to know you're also capable of overcharging and taking advantage--you certainly did that today with me. read more

Leon is awesome... he knows how to do practically everything (and if he doesn't he'll tell you). He's honest, dependable, creative (he'll help you brainstorm on how to solve problems) and he'll even give you an honest opinion about whether or not he thinks work needs to be done. Leon has worked on two homes for me and will be working on a third soon. He has replaced doors, installed bathroom vents, created drier ducts, installed electrical outlets, repaired doors, replaced doors and frames, repaired siding and trim, painted, replaced garage door latch, installed peep holes, repaired roof flashing, painted, repaired hardwood flooring, etc. My work is fairly trivial compared to other projects where he has moved plumbing in slab structures (jack hammered etc), built additions, remodeled entire homes, etc. When we met he said he can do anything and everything involved in building a home from the ground up. If there were six stars on Yelp, this guy would be the one to get it. We had recently moved back to Dallas from Denver and we finally bought a new home in the area we were looking at. The house was in a great location and it had great bones, but the guts needed work. The first thing that needed fixing was the kitchen. My wife and I decided to remodel the kitchen and I decided to start my contractor look on Yelp. The first name I run across is Leon and I give him a call. He called me back the next day to set up a time to look at the kitchen. He took a quick look at the kitchen and we discussed what style we wanted and what we were planning. Leon is great in that he lets you make the decisions and will throw in opinions on what he has experienced. After another measurement appointment for the previous cabinets, Leon sent me an invoice and it was VERY reasonably priced. I wanted the old cabinets, plumbing, and backsplash removed along with ceiling soffits to allow the cabinets to run flush to the ceiling. Leon and I then went to Home Depot to order some cabinets, which he easily ordered b/c he had drawn out the schematics of the kitchen. While we waited for the cabinets to come in, he removed everything from the kitchen: cabinets, countertops, backsplash, soffits, etc. We now had a bare bones kitchen. He then installed a new switch for the kitchen lights on another wall in our house and he hardwired the wall for our under cabinet lighting. He repaired the area where the soffits were with new drywall and repainted the walls with the existing kitchen paint color. Once the cabinets were in, he installed the cabinets and I then had the countertops measured. Once those were installed, Leon then installed the kitchen faucet, backsplash, cabinet hardware, and under-cabinet lighting. The best part was, he found a way to work with the LED puck lights that I wanted. All in all, Leon is a great guy and a great contractor. He lets you make your own decisions and is always willing to teach you how to become a handyman yourself. He's so great, I'm going to have him lay down tile in the bathroom we are remodeling as well. TLDR; Great guy, super reasonable pricing, schedule him far in advance of when you need him because he is super busy Leon is a great guy to work with and his honesty is refreshing for the kinds of people you typically work with. That said and fair warning, it's extremely busy for just about anyone in the home improvement business and Leon is no exception. I had Leon do several things around my new home including hanging some new light fixtures and fans, changing out plumbing fixtures, as well as installing a new wrought iron door. I have never met Leon, but this man deserves his accolades. I recently had my hot water heater replaced, and after they left, my AC/heater/fan would not turn on. With this lovely weather, I didn't need them anyway, but at some point ol' man winter will surely make a house call. I called Leon and told him my problem, and he immediately solved the puzzle, my furnace has a switch that the guys probably turned it off looking for the garage light. I crawled up there, found the switch, and can you believe it, all is well in the home abode again. Leon could have said let me just come over and see if I can fix it, and make a quick and easy $100, but he took the high road and my problem is solved. We stupidly bought a fridge that juuuuuuust fit in our new house. We managed to wedge it in the space but then the left French door couldn't open because it was so close to the wall! We love this fridge and didn't want a smaller one, so we called Leon. He was able to widen the doorway enough to allow both doors to open - a miracle! He made a new threshold between the kitchen tile and the dining room wood floors and stained it to match, replaced the baseboard trim, and re-painted the drywall. The paint color wasn't exactly the same (this was the paint store's fault, not his) so currently that's the only sign that anything was done. It looks great, and now that we have the right paint color nobody will be able to tell we're fridge weirdos. Such great work by Leon. We're going to have him back to install some cabinets in our kitchen pretty soon. read more

Add me to the list of people who would award Leon six stars were it possible. I had double wall ovens I needed to install and the "electricians" I hired fell through. I was running up against Thanksgiving and needed them before the holiday. Based on the reviews here I called Leon and he called back right away. The cabinet/lift/install situation that seemed to flummox the other guys were no problem at all for Leon. As one might imagine, he was completely booked for the following week so, instead, he came out on Sunday afternoon!! He was as gracious as could be about threading a needle with our tight schedule on Sundays, arrived on time, did a beautiful job, finished quickly, and charged us a lot less than I had expected. Leon is pleasant and knowledgeable. I asked him about a few other things we were thinking of doing in the house and he was very good about suggesting different options and giving me the pros/cons of each. There was absolutely no attempt to hard sell (or soft sell either, as it happens) his own work even while giving advice. I will definitely be calling Leon again for work we need done in this house and would recommend him to anyone who needs a skilled, knowledgeable handyman. read more

I have to agree with my fellow Yelpers, this man knows his trade ! Many of them, actually, lol. I was pleased to meet Leon recently when he made a number of repairs for me on a house we were preparing to sell in Garland. Leon does good work and is able to use creative thinking to come up with cost saving ideas . Leon re -screened some windows with new material, replaced broken window panes, created a framework border for a vent, repaired a fence gate, made some trim carpentry repairs, and a half dozen other things we needed to have completed in order to close on the property. I thought that Leon did very good work and was very fair in his pricing for the amount of work that he performed. We were unable to get him to commit to a time and date and soon he stopped responding to any type of communication. I hate to right a negative review, but my experience with Leon was slightly ridiculous. I called to schedule a meeting, and he told me to email my info and he'd get back to me. One week later after not hearing from him I emailed again. Another week later after not hearing back I called once more. We agreed on a time to meet, a day he claimed he was available all day. That day came, and five minutes before he was scheduled to arrive, he calls and says he must reschedule - but would not commit to a specific day or time. Just said he'd call me in the next day or so.
