This is how a local store competes successfully against the chains -- not because you should support your local merchants, which is true-- but on the basis of having what you need, convenience, knowledge, and friendliness. Leopoldi's has it all in spades! Every time I need hardware, I rush there and they have it. The only problem is navigating down their clogged aisles-- so full from floor to ceiling it is hard to walk. Kind of like going down a submarine floor in a WWII movie Not bargain prices, but no rip-offs either. Just a lot of goods and knowledgeable family members who make most trips to the much larger but less convenient neighborhood Home Depot or Lowe's generally unnecessary. Four stars instead of five because no bargain prices and in the end there are limits to what they can stock in their relatively small space. read more

If Edison's light bulb is still burning bright, oh why, oh why, can't mine? Came here on a simple very possible mission to buy a few lightbulbs and almost ran for the door. It was like an episode of hoarders. Things hanging overhead, and stringing from the walls, bursting out of every seam and crack and nook and cranny. We found some light bulbs, but were aiming for the energy efficient coil shaped ones (take that Edison!) We enlisted a tour guide who directed us to some hanging way too high above our short heads. After discovering that these lightbulbs were $15 / bulb, we went over to Save on Fifth, right next door and found similar ones for $6 that did the trick for less. read more

This place is pretty amazing. When you walk into Leopoldi's for the first time your instinct is to run...... There is stuff everywhere. This would be a big mistake. Despite the piles of stuff and constant checking in of new stock on the entry floor, they are a very well equipped hardware store. Ask and you shall more often than not be happy that you did. They stock a lot of items behind the scenes and are very helpful with getting you what you need. I have been going here for some time now and this is one of those local shops that would be missed greatly if it was to go away. It's better than the big box stores and they even have Benjamin Moore instead of the cut rate brands that are sold at Lowes or Home Depot. I want to add my kudos and admiration for the Leopoldi brothers and their overstuffed hardware shop. When I go there,I never bother to look for anything myself because all i have to do is ask for what i want and whomever is helping me knows exactly where it is or who else does. they are always more than helpful. i had to replace a back up light on my van. The tool i bought from them was hard to use because of the design of the lens. One of the brothers came out to the street and did it all for me. Over the top customer service for a sale of less than $10!!! They are truly an inspiration for the rest of us shopkeepers. read more

I can not say enough good things about this place. They are the most helpful store I've ever been to. They will help you find anything you need, from the most obscure nut, screw or bolt to the right kind of glue, easily and quickly. They know their business- they're a family business and it shows, a real old-school place in the best sense of that word. You need just one screw? Not a whole box? And it's a weird size? Then you'll buy one screw. And i have to give a major shout out for this. I had a plumbing crisis. on Christmas Eve, no less. And I called them and they had a plumber here in less than an hour. They always have what I need and more importantly know what I need when I don't know exactly what it is that I need. Seriously the most helpful and knowledgable staff you could ask for at a hardware store, and they treat you the same even if you're just buying like 5 screws and a sheet of sandpaper. Great locally owned/run store and their prices are usually better than the competition. I feel like they can almost read my mind. The store is crowded, but I can forgive that for the great service. I've always got home improvement projects going on and I can go in and vaguely describe a problem or product and they find it for me. When I've had trouble finding some products, they ordered them for me. It's the only place I will get keys copied now and I've had a ton made and all have worked fine. I got non-working copies at almost every other hardware store around the area before I ended up here. They also mix paint better than another store I've tried, where I got cans home more than once that were hardly mixed at all. read more

This business has such a great impact on the community. The owners Joe, Peter, and Rob run the store like a well oiled machine. Joe, the father, is a very hard worker despite his shyness. Peter was on his phone for awhile on a very important business call, but showed me so many funny youtube videos while helping me with keys. I go there for all sorts of things, varnish, whitewash, hardware, preserving and canning supplies, glass, string, wire, tape, paint, you name it, They have it all and are very helpful - they ask questions, very customer service oriented. Their tiny store is so packed with stuff... if you need it, it's somewhere in there. If you tell them what is is you're trying to do, they'll tell you how to do it, then show you all the parts you need. I've never felt more handy in my life. Just wanted to pipe up again and remind y'all that Leopoldi's is still the best! I stopped by to get an extra part for my AC unit, and I forgot about their credit card minimum ($10). I scrounged through my purse for change (and made my boyfriend search his pockets), and still came up a dollar short. He told me, "Don't worry about it," and let me take the parts. The customer service here is terrible. With so many choices in the hardware stores, especially in this neighborhood, avoid this place like the plague. Even Home Depot had better customer service, that doesn't say much beside this place SUCKS!!!!!! I will never shop here again. The store is disorganized and they act like their doing you a favor by answering a question. Besides that they are SOOOOO OVERPRICED! What's not to love? It's small and cramped like everything else in NYC. But I was able to easily find exactly what I needed. This is the hardware store you've been looking for. They can deal with everyone from newbies to advanced DIYers and professional contractors. They have everything although you cannot get it off the shelf yourself because it is almost always hidden under other stuff and you will not know where it is unless your surname is Leopoldi and you have some kind of miraculous photographic memory. (HOW do they remember where everything is??) But there are always at least three Leopoldis in the store, and three generations work there -- I've seen Ma, two brothers who are somewhere around 30 and 40, and one kid who's probably 18 -- so get the attention of one of them and you will be in good hands. read more

After Tarzian had fallen out of grace with me for extremely bad service, I decided to try Leopoldi's. Was not sure what to expect, as it seemed a little bit unorganized. But they have everything! And they are extremely nice and helpful and take time to listen to your project and then come up with a solution, or find your item somewhere in the store. This family owned store is a true Park Slope treasure. I recently asked them about a leak on the outside of my toilet tank. Instead of selling me something I didn't need, they suggested I just lower the water level in the tank.
