Going to Tarzian is one of very-few errands that I actually look forward to, because shopping there is always a great experience. I've been there 1-2x/week over the past few months, and the staff is always so helpful. They help me find the products I need - even when I can't fully describe it (e.g I'm not sure which size screw). This place is convenient and the staff is nice and helpful but the prices are crazy. Compared with lowes or home depot, more than 2x the price. I'm all for supporting local stores, but not at that kind of mark-up. Paying $25 for a 20 lb bag of ice melt is prompting me to write this review. I'd pay less for artisinal pink Himalayan sea salt. Home depot has a 40 lb bag of rock salt for $10. This isn't the first time I've noticed these kinds of prices. Light bulbs are also more than 2x the price. 3/9 edit: Per the owner's comments below, my issue is with the fact that Tarzian charges over 2X the prices of other stores. Lowes quotes $20 for 50 lbs of the environmentally friendly rock salt. That's $.40 per pound vs. $1.25 at Tarzian. 3X the cost! read more

Decent hardware store if you live in the area. I stopped in Saturday and it is pretty unorganized and has a staff of people walking around trying to avoid customer contact. We asked an employee where something was and they replied with "I don't know, go ask him". Ok? So we did and that employee seemed like he just lost a bet with that previous employee and had to deal with a customer inquiry. I do not normally give low ratings to small businesses, because I support them and love them, but this place seriously lacks a lot and made an easy visit to the hardware store both frustrating and annoying. read more

This is my regular for key cuts, and it's always been reliable in that respect, but for this review I wanted to tell you about a customer service experience that really stood out in my mind. So I was having a problem with reeeally slow bathroom drains, sink and shower both. Horrible. I had tried Drano to no avail. I felt that it was time to call in the big guns on this intractable problem. Luckily, my mom was visiting and she's a long-time house reno-er and do-it-yourselfer and so we decided to team up and go into battle with these incorrigible drains. Our first stop was Tarzian for supplies, and I mean we got everything, snakes, funnels, the full artillery. It was ON, people. Nothing would stop us. However, when we were there, a sales associate made a suggestion that changed the course of this narrative, though I didn't know it at the time. He said we should buy a bottle of Pequa, which is the contractor's choice for clearing drains. But I've never heard of this Pequa stuff...could it really be all that different than Drano? Mom and I went home, rolled up our sleeves, and tried the amateur snake we purchased and were met with failure. Finally, I thought, let's give this humble Pequa a try. Amazingly it cleared the drain of what must have been 8-25 years of collected hair in a snap. I didn't even buy the maximum strength Pequa it was just the reg strength. Now a year later all is still running 100% fine. So while this knowledgable salesperson killed the empowering dream of the mother-daughter duo slaying the clogged drains, he did really help us solve the problem, and for that I am grateful. Also the advice is great for anyone -- Pequa spends nothing on marketing but is a clearly superior product for this type of problem. Pick it up at Tarzian next time you are there. read more

The staff here is friendly, and are mostly able to help you find what you need. They have good basics for a neighborhood hardware store, and I almost always find something extra that 'need' that I didn't come in to buy. The only drawback, really, is that the prices on some stuff can be arbitrarily high. It's worth knowing what you want and about how much it should cost, keeping in mind that you're partially paying for the convenience of not going all the way to Lowe's. I wish Tarzian wasn't so far away from my apartment, because it's one hell of a hardware store. They carry just about everything, including about 30 different types of wall hooks. I stopped by because I needed some wood for shelving, and they had a bunch of different sizes, both finished and unfinished. Prices were reasonable, and they charge $2 to cut the wood for you, which honestly, is worth it for the convenience. While I waited for one of the guys to cut my wood, I checked out all the aisles, amazed by how many specialty items they had in stock. Then, when it came time to pay, turns out there's a whole other side of the store! This side dealt mostly with houseware and non-DIY wares, like garbage cans and cleaning supplies. I've gone in 5 times for specific needs, so the transactions never merited a review. I needed a hammer. They sold them. I needed a drill bit. They have them. On this occasion, however, I needed to build some custom things... a shelf and a stand for my TV. Both requests were unique to my apt. space and there was no easy solution - except to build from scratch. In my former life (a house out west), I'd have simply loaded up on supplies and taken everything home, discarding the surplus. But given my new "no room" abode, I needed exact amounts and no surplus. Surprisingly, they are cool with this. If you only need a third of a 2x4x12, they only charge you for the wood delivered (with a small cutting fee). Made the poor mistake of installing IKEA furniture with a Phillips head screwdriver, instead of the Pozidriv head that's supposed to not strip the heads. Needless to say, I've been sleeping on half assembled IKEA furniture and came to this hardware store hoping to either 1. Get similar screws or 2. This is my local hardware store for all my little home projects. They don't have the widest selection because they are small, but they always have exactly what I need. There's always someone at the door as you enter who is able to help you and take you to exactly what you need. They offer a delivery service if you order a lot, which is pretty cheap too. Some people say the prices are a bit high, and I wouldn't disagree with it. But, I understand smaller stores aren't going to get the best prices, and going to Tarzian is just more convenient than getting on the bus, heading out to Lowes, and trying not to get lost. My only complaint is once, when I was looking at paint colors, a couple of employees were goofing off with some sort of small rubber ball. It bounced up and broke a light bulb which practically shattered right at my feet, but none of the employees came around to my side to see if I was ok. Whenever I go in here, I have a small home improvement project in mind. Usually, I need some instruction and specific knowledge, and the guys here always are friendly and have a good answer for me. One time, I had turned all the lights off by messing with the power in the basement, and they were able to trouble shoot with me to figure out what had been the problem. Yesterday I went to Tarzian to purchase a few sample paints. When I arrived home, one was not the color I requested, which was massively inconvenient because of my time crunch. I tried calling the store, but they had already closed and their voicemail was full, so I reached out via the email I found online. Within 15 minutes I received a response from the manager of the store and the person who helped me saying they could mix it up and deliver it to me in a half hour, which they actually managed to do in even less time. That is just amazing customer service! Support Tarzian, support your local hardware store and screw the big chains - you'll never get this kind of treatment and understanding elsewhere. I have never walked in here and not had someone point me DIRECTLY to what I need, had it be the perfect item, and left with something I never would have found on my own. I don't know hardware or home improvement at all, and I've been able to consistently count on Tarzian to give me what I didn't even know I needed. The people working throughout the store are incredibly helpful and friendly, but the employees at the checkout leave much to be desired. Ah well. I feel like this is the one and only Park Slope hardware store...at least for me. It has a great selection of seemingly useless hardware for the house, packed into the little space they have for it. I can never seem to find anything by myself there, but the employees are always willing to help you find what you need, where ever it might be. I am in love with this store and all that it represents. I recently moved to the neighborhood and, back in November, visited Tarzian and was amazed to find: 1) Clorox wipes, 2) Purell, and 3) NIOSH-certified masks when these items were impossible to find elsewhere. The staff is friendly and well-informed -- everyone seems to know the inventory by heart and can either direct you to an item you're looking for or, in a number of cases, suggest something that might be even better for the task at hand. The prices are for the most part competitive with the big-box stores, but as others have mentioned here, I would happily pay more just to know that I'm supporting a local business that provides such a great shopping vibe for locals. I am a big fan of this place. Firstly, incredible how much stuff they fit in there. From floor to ceiling. 95% of the time they have what I need. They have a great understanding of what neighborhood folks are looking to buy, including seasonal items. I guess that comes from being there almost 100 yrs. Secondly they are incredibly helpful and offer good advice about your project. Thirdly the price differential with a big box store is modest. Do I want to spend time driving to Home Depot, then wearing myself our walking round in circles trying to find a salesperson? Most of the time I don't. 3.5 stars i call this a boutique hardware store and here is why: -prices are high. -you don't have to deal with big chain riffraff, invisible employees, scowling cashiers, check out lines that resemble a bus ride to hell in a third world nation. -it's reasonably easy to find items needed to perform emergency surgery on things that have been "repaired" by the fabulous mr. unlucky. -you can find some upper end items that are not always procurable at big chain hardware stores. now, all that's missing is valet parking. read more

If I could give six stars I would....Sammy in the paint department gave me the best crash course in paint finishes and complete confidence to move forward with my re-painting. He really listened to the needs of our project, gave useful advice and helped us work within our minimal budget. Having just moved to this neighborhood it is a great feeling to have a local business to come to, in person, and ask questions. I could not recommend this hardware store more.
