This is a lovely place if you want to bring the sun of southern France into your home! I really... really... recommend to add something from "Les Toiles du Soleil" into your NYC home. We need more colors in this city where Black & White reigns supreme! I grew up in South of France myself, and I do miss the very special light we have over there. Les Toiles Du Soleil literally means "The Sun canvases". Everything is hand made in south of France, (using an ancestral technique that is typical of a region in south of France, the western part), I was not that familiar with this art, since I am originally from the Eastern part of France, but these bright colors, it was so appealing to me!!! It reminded me of home. They also sell these typical summer shoes called "éspadrilles" in different colors and patterns. Some with a little wedge some without. They have beach chairs and more home accessories. They custom make, there is even a lady sewing in the back of the shop, such a nice "home made" feeling. I'm not quite sure how this store stays in business. They are striped fabric to the max. It felt a bit like a store you'd find in a beach town, like if you were looking for totebags or tablecloths. Stumbled into here today randomly while enjoying the NYC sunshine. I've read about this brand in countless magazines but had no idea the boutique was right around the corner from my office. Loved the sunny striped fabrics, makeup cases and napkins. Better yet, they were having a sale! I love that the products are all pretty much hand-made on site and the company has been around for over 150 years. The name is translated to mean "fabric of the sun," how can you not love it just because of that? The store was empty but the on-duty storekeeper was very friendly, not pushy at all, and had a cute French accent. I'm going back tonight (most likely) to get a cheerful makeup case, but would recommend the place for espadrilles, napkins, aprons, fabrics and totes! Everything looked fun and the products from here would make great gifts! Stop in if you're in the area, it'll lift your spirits even if you don't buy anything. read more

This is a gem in Chelsea. I live two buildings down the block from this place and love everything they sell. Only reason I give them 1 star is because of a bad experience I had with the seller at their shop. I was there with my friend. I was paying and my friend was still browsing. That lady apparently afraid my friend will steal something while I'm paying told my friend in the most terrible rude tone not to venture into the shop without her supervision ( not in those exact words but with the worst tone ever). It's almost like because we look brown we are probably thieves. It's sad cause that horrible sales woman is black herself and she should know better. Truly a one of a kind store. The colors, patterns and quality of their fabrics completely stand alone. Many of their goods are made right there in the store, and bolts of their gorgeous canvas line the walls towards the back of the store. You can't walk past this charming shop without smiling from the bright color emanating from within. Every wall is is covered with rolls and rolls of beautiful bright striped french imported cotton. I wandered into this shop because I was curious about the colorful shop window. I got a pair of espadrilles here mainly because the shop person (the owner?) was so friendly & helpful. Well, if you don't like stripes, don't bother - but otherwise, definitely check it out; the fabrics are very beautiful and sui generis. And don't be put off by Michele N's complaint. The fabric gets softer with each washing. They made me a tablecloth that has worn beautifully. II line-dry it, and it needs a light ironing afterwards, but for aprons that would not be necessary. I like that the matching napkins are cut from different parts of the fabric, so you get a variety of stripe patterns that all go together. read more
