I subscribed during a promo in April 2025 for $0.99 per month for one year, with tax it totals $1.05. The promo included a $10 gift card. I never received the gift card. Subsequent calls to customer service did not solve the mystery why I didn't get my gift card. I gave up. Noticed on my credit card bill I was charged $1.05 the next month as I expected. Then I saw I was charged $10.59 the following month. I contacted my credit card company and disputed the charge requesting it be corrected to $1.05 which is what I originally agreed to. My credit card company instantly resolved my dispute. In the meantime, for a different issue, I cancelled my credit card and requested a replacement for a separate phishing attempt by a bogus online retailer. Then I started getting calls from the Herald Leader I need to submit a new payment method. At that point I cancelled my subscription. Or so I thought. I subsequently received multiple phone calls and emails from them. I've marked the emails as spam. And if the calls continue I'll block them also. read more

Wow. So bad. I got the print edition for MANY years and while that slowly went down hill such that it wasn't worth the kingly price, my carrier was great and dependable which made it "worth it", sort of. The rapid deterioration came with the firing of Joel Pett and the digital transition with print BY MAIL - 3 days a week. Those were the nails in the coffin. (Up until then, I had put up with dated content, horrible customer representative support, etc., etc.) At 99 cents a week introductory offer, I gave it a try; I now begrudge that I wasted 99 cents. It's amazing they have time to email and call me constantly about re-subscribing but wont address a billing issue. They have outsourced all their customer service roles to people overseas so when you call you're talking to someone you can barely understand because their accent is so strong and when I called about a refund the other day the lady's phone kept cutting out and I couldn't hear her and then her dang roosters were crowing in the background. The Lexington Herald Leader is by far the slimiest and worst business I have ever had a personal experience with. It took me cancelling my subscription THREE separate times over the course of three months for them to stop charging me. Now that I have finally actually cancelled my subscription, they call me 1-3 times every single day trying to get me to sign back up. I tell them every time to remove me from their call list, which they do not do, and the calls always come from a different number so you cannot block them. This is the most predatory and scummy business I have EVER dealt with. They let you sign up online in one click, but it takes a 30 minute long text chats to cancel. Throughout the text thread, I asked to cancel five times. It was only after the fifth time that my subscription was canceled. As another author of this page noted, I also came into contact with a representative of the Lexington Herald-Leader trying to get me to sign up for home delivery or the virtual paper online. For whatever reason, I agreed to sign up for two months knowing that I probably would not get around to reading most of the daily editions. I was told when I called into the LHL to cancel my subscription that I would need to wait until a week before my two-month subscription was due to end, or my subscription would automatically renew starting on December 20th. I did call back and canceled on December 6th. The customer rep that I spoke with asked why I wanted to cancel and I proceeded to explain that my paper was not delivered to my door as promised. The paper was being thrown into the front yard, driveway, or the bushes of the apartment complex that I live in. The first two weeks I did not receive a paper at all. Then, a retired neighbor of mine who lives in the same complex and takes a morning walk every day at 6:00 am started to bring the paper back to my door...if there was a paper(?) Anyone walking buy could, and probably did on occasion grab a free paper, especially the Sunday paper. On December 16th, ten days after I canceled my home delivery, my CC was charged another $50.87 for two more months of home delivery...ten days after I had canceled my subscription and was given a 4-character cancellation code. I was assured that my refund would be made to my CC. After a month of nothing happening, I called again to check the status of my refund and was told would be processed within 7-10 business days. I asked if the LHL would just send me a check and the customer rep agreed to do so and verified my home address. I am still waiting on January 27th. Even after canceling my subscription, a paper is still being delivered to the front yard, driveway, or the bushes of the apartment complex that I live in; no one else that lives here has a subscription. In the past three weeks, I have been receiving five...six...seven phone calls per week from representatives of the LHL trying to get me to sign up for the paper!? I finally said "uncle". I told the last customer rep that I would sign up for the online edition of the paper if they would STOP calling me. I have repeatedly asked to be taken off the call list to no avail. I now have an online subscription to the Lexington Herald-Leader to help keep me abreast of local "happenings" for $10-$13 per month. That was Tuesday, January 25th. In the past two days, I have noticed four phone calls (I have downloaded the Robokiller app) that are from numbers that my phone does not recognize. To quell my curiosity, I answered the latest unknown number, and on the other end of the line was a customer representative of the LHL asking for me to sign up for home delivery?! I am still waiting on my refund of $50.87 for two months of home delivery of a paper I did not and do not want. read more

I get the same message beginning at 7 am throughout the rest of the day and have since I cancelled my subscription . Each time we call and receive a verbal apology and a promise that we will be given notice before it is raised again and that it won't be raised for at least 6 months. Then it is raised in less than 6 months with no notice. Started receiving the paper randomly (I never subscribed). I called and they said my daughter who doesn't even live with me had subscribed and there was a charge too. I told them there is no way she had subscribed and I confirmed with her that she had not. I also told them they were committing fraud by using her name and number to start a subscription. I started a newspaper subscription about 2-3 months ago. After 2 weeks of missed papers I called and they said they would resolve it. This happened for two more weeks, called both weeks and got the same response. Fourth week with no paper I called and asked for a refund and was flat out told no and that they would fix it. I lived in the Lexington area since 1988 and moved into the city itself in 1994. I moved to California in 2008 and followed the Lexington Herald on line and on my Blackberry. Over the years it always seemed to me this paper was preoccupied with college sports. Specifically, the University of Kentucky and their sports program. This newspaper, to me, seemed to spend considerable effort in reporting the affairs of UK sports more than any other story. Some how this just seemed out of place for a paper to be so bias towards one source of news way more than any other source, event or story. The events of the past week confirmed my belief, the Lexington Herald has no concept of reporting news. Case in point. Why was every lead picture over the last week, as it appeared on the mobile application I use, a picture of some figure in UK sports? Why was every lead story about UK sports? As you are more than aware, if you've read or watched anything other than the Lexington Herald, there was a weather occurrence that never occurred since 1888. Hurricane Sandy devastated the mid states of the East Coast and the Lexington Herald only gave this event a sideline. Why? There are currently 88 citizens of our country dead. There are still roughly half that number missing and unaccounted for. There are still people trapped in their homes and apartments awaiting rescue. Why hasn't this paper reported that. Today's lead story and picture was of the UK basketball coach and the story was an invitation to watch a basketball game. Why? Do you know what is going on outside the borders of Fayette county? Are you aware of what is going on outside the borders of the state of Kentucky? I think not! It is without morals the paper reports only on UK sports. It is obvious this paper does not in any way shape or form, exercise ethics in reporting. This paper is bias and lacks backbone to report anything other than sports. It is shameful and embarrassing for me to state to associates I once lived there. I firmly believe this paper needs to rebuild itself into a non-bias reporting media. One that reports truth and relevancy in life. It is obvious this paper could care less. Shame on you Lexington Herald. It's sad you have no clue. read more

Not sure how they stay in business... we have been taking the paper since we moved to central Ky in '72. We are old school and like reading a real paper but we finally gave up this week. We have made more delivery complaints than we can count. Always the same response... "your problem will be corrected immediately. We are forwarding the info to the local delivery supervisor" or something to that extent. Sometimes we got a couple of days of improvement but than reverts back to wet papers in the gutter a foot away from the pretty blue Herald Leader box or no paper at all. Not to mention the lack of good news coverage. We finally said enough. Even after telling them to discontinue service and them begging us to reconsider, the next four papers were either too wet to read or still no where near the box they insured they would be in. Extremely shady company. I signed up for one month to help out some kid going door-to-door selling subscriptions, and they continued to automatically bill me $52 per month for well after that without me realizing. They didn't even have the courtesy to keep sending the paper. AVOID THIS COMPANY AT ALL COST!!! I signed up for a trial period with this paper for a local fundraiser and was given a coupon book. I never received a single paper and I pretty much just said forget it and I was going to let it be water under the bridge. However after the trail period was up I was constantly getting calls on a daily basis sometimes up to 3 times a day asking me to renew. I repeatedly told them no that I was not interested that I was unsatisfied and I had not received the service I paid for. After about 3 weeks they finally stopped calling then out of nowhere I get a letter from a collection agency saying I owe them $19.91. I called the paper and the first time they actually hung up on me I called back and finally got them to remove the charge however the collection agency they are using is still disputing the charge. read more

As of 1/1/2019 Delivery is nonexistent. Signed up 2 months ago. Guess how many actual deliveries I have gotten? None. that is right, Zero. Every Saturday and Sunday I go to customer service and report no delivery online. I have called customer service and I get typical, we sorry. We will give you credit. We will let management know about it and get it fixed right away. Ask to speak to a manager, you get a line supervisor to tell you he is the last line as no manager but him/her. They will fix. Not. I even searched online for the management team emails. Sent those out too, but got nowhere. What they do not understand, is I did not sign up for excuses, no delivery, or credit. After being bamboozled to subscribe to something I didn't want as I walked into the door at Kroger (the guy was relentless, and I finally agreed to sign up just so I could get on with my grocery shopping, knowing I would just cancel anyway), trying to cancel is an act of Congress. Impossible! After MANY unsuccessful attempts to get anyone to answer the option to unsubscribe since it just rings until you hang up, up to 40 min later. I call back and select option to new subscription and they answer 1st ring, but then when I say I want to cancel, I get put on mute for 20 min. I call back, again select option of new subscription since that's the only line that answers for the guy to say he can't find my name, addr OR account on THEIR letter and to hang up and call back later. It's almost 3 pm and they close at 3 so he knew that was not possible. I said I was not hanging up until he found my account or put me with someone who could. THEN he said found it and would cancel. I said I need an email to prove it and I will hold until I get the email. He said ok have a nice day and tried to hang up. I said HOLD on! Do not hang up. I am staying on phone until I get the email confirming cancelation. He proceeds to tell me has to send the request to customer service and hangs up. I very seriously doubt that happens OR it gets canceled. I will put a comment on this review to advise what happened. Most unethical business I have ever dealt with. Ridiculous!
