He also picked us up after the tour and brought us to a delicious lunch spot in the center of town after sharing some quick history tidbit of the town. I awoke with with intentions of cycling back to Dublin from Tullamore, but a quick look outside…read moreindicated that it was raining. Much as I enjoy cycling, I wasn't keen on going 150 kilometres in the rain, so we decided to get the train home. I rang my oul lad to find out the times, and fortuitously enough, there was one scheduled to leave in half an hour. He also warned me, though, that there was only room on each train for two bicycles, and we had three, but I figured that we'd head down to the station and sort something out. We got to the station (a 2 min cycle from the centre of town) and made some inquiries at the ticket window. I'm not exaggerating when I say that the lady behind the counter is the most surly and sour-faced oul bitch that I should ever hope to meet. With an expression on her face like a bulldog licking piss from a nettle, she begrudgingly informed us that there was only two bicycles allowed per train. Was there not anything we could do, like disassemble one of the bikes or something? She just shrugged and took another swig from her vinegar bottle (she didn't really). At this point, another man came into the station and approached the counter, so we moved over to let him get to the window and to further discuss our options. He had what looked like an ID or swipecard in his hand, and he asked the woman if he possibly leave it in for someone. She made no verbal reply; she kind of shrugged and reluctantly accepted the item from the man, as if she had been offered a turd wrapped in cellophane. A lady who clearly detests members of the public should perhaps not be working in a customer relations capacity. We decided to buy tickets and hope for the best; when we went to the counter the lady repeated her refrain of two bikes per train. Yeah, we heard you the first ten times you old hag, give us the fucking tickets (which of course we didn't say to her face, but it was very tempting). The tickets were actually very reasonable. There was some promotion on, meaning that instead of being €26, the tickets were only a tenner, and it was only an extra €4 per bike. Out on the platform, we vented a little spleen about the harlot inside, and tried to figure out who would stay behind or what arrangements we'd make, when the conductor (I guess that what he is; yer man on the platform with the green flag) approached us. Three bikes, is it, he asked. Yes, we replied. Well I can't promise anything, but sure we'll do our best to get yiz on, alright? This spot-on chap is what turned a one-star review into a three star review. When the train came along he got all the bikes on with very little fuss. The sour-faced oul bitch on the counter should take a few pointers from her colleague's helpful approach. Tullamore Station: best to have your tickets bought in advance so you don't have to talk to that striapach in at the window, but be sure to doff your cap to the sound conductor.

It took a yr to plan this trip, adding guests, choosing a route, hotels & things to do along the way. Going w/the flow on all the various challenges & changes can be difficult to say the least Lisa's communication w/each individual, dealing w/questions, payments & more, puts her on the top of my list. Patsy, our driver, was amazing, knowledgeable, keeping us on time (or helping to update an existing reservationon on the fly) & w/insight on the various events, information & what to expect. When I went to Tullamore recently, I have to admit that my expectations were not terribly high…read more Tullamore was not where we had intended going to at all, but we had cycled an extremely circuitous route from Dublin, it was almost getting dark and Tullamore was the only town on the map of any size within about 15 miles, so we landed up there at about half eight last Thursday without any fore-knowledge of the place. I had made a booking with Loughney's only minutes before on the road from Kilbeggan, and I was seeking any sort of B&B-type place to lay the head for the night. All the other B&Bs were full (this happened to be the week of the Tullamore Show), and Loughrey's was €35 per night per person, so I wasn't in any position to argue. It emerged that Loughrey's was a guesthouse rather than a B&B, and it was nicer than a lot of hotels that I have stayed in. The rooms were nice and clean, tea and coffee making facilities, spacious bathroom, individual bath-mats - really nice. The bar downstairs seemed pretty quiet, but then again this was very early on a Thursday evening, so maybe it picks up later in the night. The staff were pretty helpful, arranging a place for us to lock-up our bikes and all that. There is a nightclub at the back but it only opens at the weekend, so we were unable to experience it's undoubtedly manifold delights. We had to go elsewhere for our nocturnal entertainment (of which more later). The one thing about the otherwise lovely accomodation in Loughrey's is that the pub is on the main street, so there are loads of trucks thundering past all morning, and also the place is always roasting, the corridors and everything. Still, if you go to bed fluthered (as we all did) you should be alright. When we descended the next day to get our complementary breakfast (served til half past eleven for those of you that are interested), we experienced the low point of our stay at Loughrey's. There was only one waitress, and she took an awful long time to bring us our cooked breakfasts. And she only brought us our tea ages after the fries, by which time we were all thoroughly thirsty and irritable. And our toast was brought over by a cleaning lady, who seemed to have been press-ganged into serving duties by the harried waitress, and who didn't seem to comprehend our requests for butter, which arrived even later still. Plus, I had to ask on three separate occasions for a glass of water. I mean, jeez louise! Still, breakfast aside, Loughrey's is a pleasant and inexpensive place to stay if you visit the surprisingly enjoyable town of Tullamore.

I was rather speechless when I walked in to Loughrey's because inside is all modern with good low volume music playing. There is a night club (entrance around the corner) if that is your thing but the bar itself is perfect for a chat even on a Saturday night. There are even a few decent beers available and I was glad to have some Paulaner on tap. They also had the new Smirnoff €5 mojito machine. If you get hungry there is a Thai restaurant right in the pub!! We both loved it.

It's a comfortable old shoe of a building, with some modern day polish. Bustling staff efficiently take care of you at reception or steer you into the dining room. There's always a carvery for lunch- which is always well attended. Given its location in the centre of the town square, parking is close at hand in the centre of the square. However, on a busy day these will fill up early in the day. We always stop there when travelling cross county - a handy and comfortable place to stop.

On a boat trip around Lough Ree my friend knew of this place and called ahead to see if we could…read morepull up for the night and also if we could put a tent on the shoreline too, which they gladly agreed to and at no cost! Sweet! This place is a restaurant/bar along with having multiple chalets for rent; whilst you can access it from the main road there is also a public jetty which you can use to pull up along side. To find the jetty from the lake you have to really know the area and what gem lies beneath... There's no signage, just a keen eye. Arriving on shore, there are a few chalets facing the shoreline, they look great! Tucked behind a few chalets, you have the restaurant! Asked for a table for 4, with a 30-45 minute wait, there is a small bar area which wasn't busy so we huddled up there and after a day on the lake, a well deserved drink was in order. Staff were very friendly and no sooner were we given a table :-) Everyone was raving about the half crispy duck so we surely ordered that, with me, I opted for the steak... The food was excellent, portioned to feed an army although after our active day, we made a sterling effort with everything. To start I had the French onion soup, was delicious. Next up was the steak, which I was not prepared for... The menu just says steak small or large, I said large thinking hey, 10oz maybe... Oh no, what felt like 100oz was served up with onions mushrooms along with garlic butter. Feast like I've never had before, protein sweats of the good kind ensued!
