I am not a fan of this club, but somehow always get suckered into going. The music is fun, but overall the atmosphere pretty much sucks. It is super smoky (coming from a smoker mind you), the bartenders are rude (telling a sober girl I gave her a five when I only had a ten in my pocket) and there is only one toliet in the ladies room. I am sure I will go with the flow and be back, but I will need some serious liquor to have fun. read more

The drinks at Liar's Club, a wonderful dirty (not really DIRTY) little rock and roll bar are moderately priced, but that isn't close to the best part about this place. The vibe you get when you walk through the door is one of a good time. The DJs are always spinning something loud and fast, so it's a good place to go on a night that you have energy. But on weeknights, the downstairs is fun, the usual suspects are holding down the end of the bar, and the drinks pack a punch. If you have a love for the Chicago music scene, whether it be metal, rock or punk, Liar's Club is your place. At any given time (with the exception of Saturdays when the place is overrun by college kids and downstairs plays dance music) you are surrounded 80% by old scenester Chicago musicians. 50% of those are actually employed there! Liar's Club has been the springboard for many a night I can't quite recall in full detail-last time I was there I apparently pulled my best buddie's dress off in front of a member of Ministry-I had no recollection of this the next day but thought it was pretty cool. I visited Liars Club a few Saturday nights ago for the first time. I quite liked it. The atmosphere was totally chill and unpretentious and it wasn't so loud that you couldn't talk to friends. Fun mix of music and a hopping dance floor if you're into that sort of thing. Also, the crowd seemed to be early 30s which was nice, and I didn't spot any Trixies, which was definitely a bonus. Went here for a friend's birthday party not knowing what to expect. When I first walked in I thought what the hell is this place! Crazy furniture, super dark, muppet porn on the TV, small dance floor, interesting decor. But as the night got started this place warmed up to me. The music was a great mix and even though the dance floor is really small...it was soo much fun! Drinks were cheap and they were actually good with a lot of booze in them. I would have to say it was one of the best nights I have had in a long time. This is not your typical Depaul bar. This bar is dirty, loud and just all around awesome. I mean, any bar that has cardboard cutouts of Kiss placed in nearly every corned is ok in my book. The times I have been the crowd has been mainly tattooed musician/artists types. In other words, my kind of people. I am not the least bit ashamed to proclaim my love for this fantastic bar. Somehow they have captured two of my favorite bar qualities that seem to logically contradict - dive bar and a dance floor/DJ that actually make me want to dance. And dance I did. I danced the night away. Not only did I dance the night away, I did it in flip flops and normal clothes, no little black bar pants needed here! Plus there is a photo booth. Rockin. I found myself here one night before Boom Boom Room. The bartender had made a MySpace bulletin post regarding $1 PBR's for the evening. My friend and I had no idea about this bulletin post, but were super stoked to learn about the really cheap beer. For a Monday, the place was very chill. I enjoyed the atmosphere and the bartenders were very attentive. The music was great as well and added to the overall ambiance for the evening. I would love to see what this bar is like on a weekend. Liar's club is a punk bar through and through. It can be hit or miss. I've been here on a weekday and the place is empty, but I like quiet, local place to bring friends for some drinks and conversation. There is a dance floor, and on the weekends it can get a little crowded, but I don't really like the music selection. It varies a lot, and the DJ is more of just a guy picking from a jukebox, but you don't get a say in what plays next. Also, there are some long pauses sometimes between tracks which can get annoying. Tuesdays there is a great Punk DJ upstairs, and he is pretty good. My vote is for middle of the week. Plenty of parking, good crowd. read more

I've been here twice so far and i've loved it both times: once for a show and once for dancing. The show was great because it's a pretty small space perfect for a rockabilly show: not too cramped and just enough space to dance a little. That being said, the next time i went i wasn't sure exactly what to expect since i knew there wasn't a show....but i had a really great time. the music was a little all over the place (think gaga followed by 90's hiphop with some quality classics thrown in) but i think that was the fun of it. no one was snooty about the music or the crowd, everyone was just there to have a good time. i don't like "clubs" so i'm excited to have finally found a place where i can dance in my chucks without any over dressed, over made up club girls looking down on me. also worth mentioning- cash only (but they have an atm inside the bar), $2 pbrs, photo booth, and the door guys said they would keep an eye on my bike which i locked up out front- which i really appreciated because it seems a little dodgy in the weird little nook it's located in. read more

Ah, Liar's Club. For some reason, for so long, we were hesitant to check this place out. Our mistake. There is lots of fun to be had here. The beer selection is better than you'd expect, the pours are heavy and the crowd is diverse. After midnight the dance floor is pretty rockin' and you never know what kind of music is going to come out of the DJ booth featuring a cardboard cutout of KISS. Oh yeah, there is a photo booth. Where do I begin... Let's start with a fixture at the Liar's Club- naked dancing guy. Every weekend the naked guy shows up, dances completely nude on the dance floor (including bare feet, which I continue to marvel at) and between songs sits on a bar stool naked waiting for "his jam." The Liar's Club staff doesn't seem to mind, which says a lot about this place. Next let's discuss booze- PBR drafts are $2 at all times. At least you don't feel guilty when you spill half of all beer you buy on yourself and others on the dance floor. The DJ's here are dicks. If you request a song, and tip them, they still think they're way too sweet to play it. They try to maintain this elitist alliance with a punk rock-type dance mix, but they need to just deal with the fact that people also like to dance to Ludacris, Nelly, and other lame-ass hip hop songs. Just embrace it already! The women's bathroom is fucking disgusting. I'd recommend adult diapers instead of this den of squaller. (They will fill up quickly though with the $2 PBR special...) Lastly, they have a photo booth, which is great fun... for $4 you get 4 photos of you and as many drunks as you can pack into the booth as a keepsake. All-in-all, I love this bar. read more

Went there on a Friday night and a band was playing. The atmosphere was that of a Chuck E. Cheese biker bar.

This is seriously one of the best kept secrets in Chicago (I almost don't want to review it for fear that it will become over populated with idiots). The "Old School Dance Party" on Friday and Saturday nights is simply awesome!! The best combo of 80's, 90's and today's music. You'll find yourself singing along and having a gay ole time! The people there are always nice and there is never any aggro! The clientele range from mohawked rockers to college kids but everyone seems to get along. The prices aren't too bad although I would not recommend ordering any kind of martini, it just isn't that kind of bar and the bar tenders don't have time to be shaking up a cocktail. Stick with beer and shots. The upstairs bar is more rock and has a more chill vibe. Parking is not usually an issue if you get there before 11pm. Sitting is limited but who wants to sit when you can dance!! The small dance floor gets packed! Oh, and then there is the legend known as Naked Man, those of you who have been there know what I'm talking about. Honestly if you are looking for a fun night out there is no better place to go. I have converted all my friends to this bar. Never had a bad experience. On a side note, I read that the place is haunted! Anyone else hear that story? Supposedly when the building was a two flat the occupant of the upstairs floor drowned his wife in the bath tub which until recently was still there. Liar's Club has changed over the years. I think I would have put it in the same vein as the Exit as early as 5 years ago. The change has not bothered me much. I really enjoy dividing the night between the upstairs and downstairs. The music upstairs usually does not disappoint. It is a good mixture of punk, new wave and indie. The Lethal Weapon pinball machine is a personal favorite. We are talking replays galore! I have heard that someone was murdered in the corner where the pinball machine resides and the ghost haunts the bar. It is said that the corner is the coldest spot in the bar. Spoooooky.... The downstairs scene is always a good time, as well. The DJs usually play a good mix. My favorite nights are when they spin heavy on new wave. Fun atmosphere. The biggest problem I had here was that a bunch of jock assholes started a mosh pit and a fight during the last song of a Sat. night. It was "Hit the Lights," by Metallica, I think. The douche bags actually tried to start simultaneous fights. A kid got punched out for trying to quell the ensuing brawl. You can never predict this kind of shit, and I know that. The staff was pissed that they didn't have a shot at any of the morons. Moral of the story: always a good time unless Metallica comes on. Then you'll have to endure being called a "pussy" by a coked up jock douche bag. Big points for the naked guy, too. Show up and see what I mean... read more

Lairs club is a smaller bar with a dance floor (which is also small). They make some good drinks that are cheaper than a lot of bars/clubs in Chicago and there is no cover charge. Earlier in the evening you can catch a seat at the bar and have a few drinks when things are slow. Later on in the evening the place get pretty packed and a lot more interesting! They play good music and have a nifty photobooth with some funny props to add to the experience. It's casual so don't come in your dressiest get-up. It is dark, loud, and sort-of erie, but in a fun way. I would definitely go back! read more

How the mighty have fallen! Liar's club used to be one of the best bars in the city. Now it's one of the worst. Someone played a cruel joke on the DJ's by replacing their Ramones and Sex Pistols CD's with MC Hammer and Sir-Mix-A-Lot. I'm not kidding. A great dive bar/DJ dance bar that draws all kinds of people. I mean obvious mingling coworkers, trixies, milfs, cougars, d-bags, punks, rockers, geeks and freaks. Sometimes it's a hit or miss whether Friday or Saturday is the night to go to get the full effect of Liars. After 11:00 PM is the time when it can kick into high gear. If you want to avoid the cheap $5 cover, then go at 9:00 but really $5 is nothing. I used to go all the time back when the naked guy, who looked a bit like Kevin Spacey, was a common encounter. I haven't seen him as much and kind of glad about it. No hanging dongs on the dance floor, please. Dance floor is small, I mean small and I've witnessed ladies getting sneak grind by d-bags when its full capacity. Does that technique work for dudes? They have a KISS themed room upstairs that they open sometimes for the overflow and the upstairs toilet has an unusable bathtub, weird. Just go and see what you have been missing. read more

Good gin n tonics and tunes...and a fun atmosphere. We liked the smaller lounge upstairs with a black and red Kiss theme and roaring fireplace. The addition of Lethal Weapon pinball machine was a nice bonus for pinball lovin' husband. The music downstairs was good, and we hope to make another trip to go dancing. On the night we were there, a haunted Chicago tour happened to be passing through and informed us that 3 separate ax murders occurred in the upstairs room--hence the red painted walls.
