super glad we came here for some drinks and the free hot dogs before a cubs game! it is a super cute lil joint and has great, cozy neighborhood vibes. the free hot dogs were a HUGE plus! the drinks were also really good and unique- will def be back for those, and also to play some board games. next time we may reserve a table, as most were reserved in advance and we were able to sit for just a bit before the reservations came in. i will say that there is one reason why this place isn't getting 5 stars from me right now and that is solely because one of the bartenders that i interacted with was quite rude. i work in customer service myself and can understand having a bad day but to project it onto customers is just not okay. she was super unfriendly and had a tone when talking to me. i will still come back to this place as it is local and i loved everything else about it but i really didn't appreciate that experience with that one bartender. read more

On our first night in Chicago, I was looking for something to do in the Wrigley Field area, when I discovered a local pub was doing a Jeopardy trivia night. I showed up shortly before the game was set to begin and snagged myself a perfect spot at the bar. The place was already hopping and the vibe at Guthries is exactly what I'm looking for in a bar or pub. I started off with a Manhattan and honestly it was pretty bad, as it had been loaded up with vermouth. It didn't bother me that much, though, especially once the game began, which was just so much darn fun. My bartender was super friendly and helpful and I enjoyed the couple of beers I wound up ordering. I wish my local bar was as cool as Guthries. My niece & her husband live a few doors down from Guthries & they had invited us to a Cubs game...thanks to a rain delay we got to enjoy an hour at Guthries! As soon as I stepped inside I could tell this was my kind of pub. First off, they don't serve food (but you CAN get FREE hot dogs there on game day!!!) so you can stop anywhere & bring in your own food. We got take out & luckily got a front table by the window. We had really good cocktails & cold beer. So in the old school dive bar sense don't be deterred in that they DO make good craft cocktails here. They have sidewalk tables & a back patio. My friends and I walked into this tavern on a Saturday night to enjoy a few drinks after a scrumptious dinner. This place was very lively and played good throwback music! We had an out of towner visiting Chicago, so my friends made him try Malort shot as a welcome and I cannot say he liked the taste, but definitely the experience. We were lucky to get a huge table and just relax for the night. The music wasn't too loud and allowed us to casually chat with each other without screaming lol. Used to be a great place back in the day but as of summer 2024 it feels like it's lost its charm. The bartender was just bad late night on a Sat, the games were in horrible shape, and the place was just not what it used to be. If you do go I'd recommend bringing one of your own games and not touching anything they have there. It was like going through the game drawer of a small child who never washed their hands and had a penchant for throwing up bad draft beer. read more

It's your classic dependable local watering hole, known for its thousands of first dates, with relatively cheap drinks, board games, fun events, and a nice outdoor patio. Guthries is back y'all! After having closed during COVID leaving the neighborhood gutted, Guthrie's has since REOPENED. Despite living in the area for years, I somehow never made it inside this neighborhood pub. Once they reopened, I was sure to change that! I've since been twice and have been kicking myself for letting so many years go without it! Guthries is the kind of neighborhood spot your favorite characters would go in a sitcom. It's a homey local watering hole, and I could not ask for more. For someone who isn't super into beer like myself, they have an awesome variety for ciders available, including my favorite, Vander Mill's Totally Roasted. All the bartenders and servers I've encountered have been super friendly and fun! There are tons of board games available, making it the perfect date spot or place to meet friends. I went with a few friends on Saturday and we laughed our butt off playing trivia. If you get hungry, they're cool with you ordering food in since it's a bar only. Good vibes all around here. Guthries! What a local fave! I love meeting friends here on a weeknight for trivia or games 'n chatting. The vibe is divey & very casual yet intimate. I love the gingham tablecloths and lamps- they add a lil romanzaaa, if you will. It's nice that you can BYOFood. Sometimes people will roll through selling pizza etc. too! A neighborhood staple for decades, Guthrie's is back and better than ever after reopening a year ago after the pandemic caused it to briefly close its doors. There's nothing fancy here, just. whole bunch of neighborhood regulars and fun bartenders having a pint, watching a game, and playing board games. But, what more could you want? The card minimum is 10$ (always helpful for me to know as I never carry cash). They have pizza that you can choose from or a bucket of menus from restaurants in the neighborhood that deliver that you can pick for food . They have an ample number of board games (limited options for two players) but if you've got a big group there's a ton . Guthries is a great bar that does not fit the Wrigleyville norm. It is a very laid back place with drinks that are not overpriced and board games! I will say that these board games have seen better days, but what can you expect when they've passed through so many drunk and grubby hands. The selection is still decent enough and it makes it that much more fun to hang out and drink with your friends! The few times that I've been, the bartenders have been great at suggesting drinks and overall service. Finding seating was rough one time on the weekend when it was crowded, but if you come early enough or on a weeknight it should not be a problem. There is food here (read: pizza and mozzarella sticks are your only two choices), but I have not tried either options. I believe you can BYOF so that's a pretty sweet deal. Then you could have food, drinks, AND board games. This place is really cozy and so far I've really enjoyed my time hanging out here. It's a chill place to hang out with friends and you get to skip a lot of the undesirable characteristics of other nights out at the local Wrigleyville bars. I'll definitely return here! read more

I don't want to say why we came here because I think it might be a Chicago kind of secret.. and now I understand why. I was worried it might be "touristy" based on what we knew but I'm soooooooo glad it was not for what we experienced! We got there at 4 on a Thursday before a Cubs game - and they weren't open til 5... however the owner saw we were standing there at the door (we were kind of sad at this point for making it this far and trying to think of our next move) and he opened up early for us! Guthries is my favorite neighborhood tavern. It never disappoints for some relaxed fun. -Located on a quaint tree-lined section of Addison. The ivy-covered building is very welcoming--you immediately want to open the door and go in. -The interior is cozy with dark woods and a long bar. They also have many of the large ceiling tiles replaced with artwork by locals which is a fun and unique touch. -They always have a nice selection of beers on tap at reasonable prices. The bartenders are efficient and friendly. -They may be most famous for all the board games they have on hand. We love coming in and playing Scattergories or Taboo. -The place is open on Thanksgiving and we have a tradition of coming after dinner and hanging out--this is when they start playing Christmas music and it's not unusual for tipsy patrons to start singing along. read more

There is a decent amount of beverage options. The prices are just right. There are small tables for more intimate game-playing in the front bar area. The back has some bigger tables for bigger groups. It's a little drafty in back, but a nice cool space. They have a server that goes around too. And bonus, the tamale man comes by, so snacks! Inattentive and slow on a night where it wasn't busy at all. Enter thru front door on the corner of the building and you'll find lower dining tables to the left by the front windows and the bar basically right in front of you. The all wooden bar with large classic rail has maybe 10 classic bar stools with green padded seat and back support. Back bar that is as busy as the ceiling with various decor, mirrors, shelves, and taps/bottles. To the right of the bar is a back room with various seating options. Cozy & fun and like others have mentioned, close enough to Wrigley but just far enough away. Totally different than your typical Wrigleyville bar. read more

Growing up one of my favorite, favorite things was to play board games. My little sister liked Guess Who? because she could make fun of the cards or trick me "Is this person older than us?" Um. She liked Don't Break the Ice too. Poor guy in chair! I liked Clue (cool mansion. Great Movie) and Life. But we played lots of games all the time. So of course I like Guthries! It's so cute and cozy and has a bunch of board games. There's a lot of charm since its small, has interesting decor, and patio in summer. You can easily while away a low key afternoon or evening playing board games or scrabble, drinking beer, ordering food. There's no kitchen but you can have food delivered in (they have a stack of menus). And the tamale guy shows up sometimes. The bartender is really nice and it's a good crowd. One of my favorite bars in Chicago... oh how I miss it! In my opinion, you can't beat a night with good beers and board games. Okay, maybe you can, but sometimes said nights are exactly what you need. This place is so tiny and you need to get there early to get a table. The bartenders are all fantastic, but the man with the long white beard is simply the best. Ask him for a recommendation, then try your friends in Candyland, Checkers, Connect Four and really any board game you could ever dream of.... They will let you bring in food from outside places, so consider that an option if you're hungry. I don't believe they have food, though I have vague memories of them maybe serving some frozen pizzas... One of the best nights I had when living in Chicago was spent with three friends at a perfectly size table at Guthrie's playing Operation while drinking an incredible Pale Ale. Go... now! read more

I though I'd discovered a hidden gem in Wrigleyville. Nope! Everyone knows about this place. Luckily, on my visit, it was busy but not packed. There seemed to be a mix of regulars and random people, but do you know who was conspicuously absent? Assy, loud-mouthed, obnoxious frat boy types! Considering that I arrived only a few short hours after a Cubs game ended, this was a welcome sight indeed. I really liked the bartenders. One of them chatted with me about Malort, and the other told me a little about the the decor. Oh, yes, the decor. It's as if they started with a nautical theme but then decided, "F*ck it!" and let some art school students go crazy on the place. Please, please look at the ceiling. I don't mean "sample each of the tasty craft beers on tap repeatedly until you pass out on your back." I mean really take a look at it. It's worth your attention. I enjoyed the random mix of old Motown hits that was playing during my visit, too. It wasn't stupid loud, but you could hear it over the background chatter. How do so many bars get this wrong? I love, love, love, love that they have shelf upon shelf of board games for patrons to enjoy. While I must declare shenanigans on the movie trivia game for having a bizarre Steven Seagal bias, it was a great way to finish off a date night with my husband. Oh, and if anybody takes Scrabble away from me when I'm sober, I'll cut a bitch. Fair warning. Ladies, please note that the bathroom is pretty damn clean for a bar.
