Oh Liar's....I miss you. Actually, I don't. You + me = trouble, and you + me + a certain blonde haired friend of mine = trouble for everyone! I used to come on Tuesdays because a friend would host and it was easy to convince people to come after work. Then I started coming because the same friend would host on Fridays about once a month. Then I just decided to keep coming because I actually like the feel of the bar. It's small enough and the bartenders are great. They used to have an amazing photobooth (a polaroid with 4 pictures)....and then they were forced to get a new one. I hate it, for the most part. The only thing I like is that it automatically prints out 2 sets which is pretty sweet because now you don't have to argue about who gets to keep the photo (I always win those arguments, thank you very much!) I've seen all sorts of people here. You never know who you'll run into at Liar's, but that's kind of why I like it! It's a cash only bar, which I've said before, it's either a blessing in disguise or a pain in the ass. Either way, decent music, awesome bartenders and an interesting crowd. read more

I have kind of a love/hate relationship with this place, but I always have a great time there - even when some drunk trixie is trying to beat me up (They always think I'm giving them the evil eye, for some reason). The staff kicks ass, and drinks are reasonably priced. I try to avoid it on Saturday nights, but Friday nights aren't too bad. I just wish I could get motivated to get out during the week again. now, i wouldn't consider myself a club hopping expert, but i definitely know how to have fun and have been to a several clubs in chicago. I say BY FAR this is the most fun. an ex introduced me about 6 years ago, and he had been a regular for years before that (and still is). its low key, laid back, but the music is the most awesome mix of shit you can find ANYWHERE!! its like you want to get there early and stay all night so you don't miss some juicy 80's alterna hit you have been dying to hear! or that indie rock song you can't help but sing to! or that industrial song that gets you pumped! or that booty song that makes you dance like a stripper! THEY ARE ALL HERE UNDER ONE ROOF WITH ONE DJ!! an addendum: the DJ that used to be here is no longer. the current DJ on saturday's isn't as good, but he tries. i thought he relied a little too much on 80's hits and only played one song or two from another genre at a time. i still had fun, and will definitely come back, but i miss you old DJ that loved my glasses (john st john i believe his moniker was)!! read more

At first, I was upset about the $5 cover to hear a '60s girl cover band I'd never heard of. But the band was entertaining, and the PBR was $1 a pint. So, bonus. My only complaint is that I couldn't see the performance area from my seat at the bar. That's not a big deal, but I do award extra points to venues where you can see the band from almost any angle. The bartended took a KISS lunchbox off the shelf so I could confirm Paul Stanley's makeup pattern, and I really appreciated that. Oh, and the fez light-covers are adorable. read more

I only have 2 things to say about this place. Well, 2.5. 1. They have Delirium Tremens, which was unexpected for me. 1b. However, on the down side, the bartender asked me three times if I knew that it was $8 for 8oz. I told him yes, I could read, as it was clearly marked on their chalkboard. I threw my $50 at him (what an felicitous time to be carrying a large bill), and left after that drink. 2. Nouveau Chicagoans fresh off the farm from IndianaOhioIowaMichigan will tell you its a scarrrrrry dive bar and that it is very edgy to go there. But its really just a punk/Indi/hipster bar that tries real hard to look divey. Be careful, if any of you Midwesterners ever leave Middle America and go to an East Coast 'dive' bar, it will be very different and not in a good way. I've been dragged here numerous times as part of a group and I don't mind it because I like Punk Rock which they often play, One piece of advice: The place is not far from the city but it is isolated so If you take a taxi don't even think about flagging one down outside when you leave, unless you have time on your hands. read more

i always drive by this place on fullerton and thought that it was some closed out bar. Not the case at all. This place is definitely open. First off, if you are coming from anywhere east in lincoln park, have your cab driver turn around so that you are dropped off directly in front of "the liars club" so that you don't have to face the perilous journey of crossing fullerton after having a few drinks too many. I'm really confused why a bar like this would charge cover. It just doesn't seem like the type of establishment that has the horsepower to do so. Whatever. Fine. Also, heads up this bar is CASH ONLY. Which i guess was fine since i left my tab open at the previous bar I was at and didn't have my credit card anyways. (ugh.) The crowd at this bar was.. interesting? It was a total clusterF of people - from sorority girls to bikers. Every was pretty drunk, and the dance floor was a disaster - in a good way. That said, i had some crazy people definitely invading my personal space more than I am comfortable with. The actual place is pretty cool and many bands I enjoy play there. The only thing that kills it is the Blonde Bartender. She was SO rude when I went to order, just cuz I had my ID in my hand she assumed it was a card so instantly she yelled "CASH ONLY". Girl I know. I guess she didn't see the fat stack of cash I had in my other hand. Ordered my drink I even tipped her a dollar. Went back for another but she completely ignored me, had 3 people tell me she was going around telling everyone that "I must be new" sorry I'm not an old ass like you. I guess my youthfulness angered her. She also didn't give my friend his change for a $10 drink when he have her a $20. Also, I was casually mentioning it to my sister and turns out, she knew exactly who I was talking about! All I had to say is "blonde bartender" and she said that the exact same lady would ignore her and her friend. I guess she doesn't like girls, especially when they're non-white. Liars Club and Exit are two of my favorite punk bars in Chicago. I do give a little more love to Liars Club because of the owners, who are hands-on drunks, and the staff. The Haggerty brothers (www.myspace.com/officialpegboy) are almost always around. Larry Damore is there as well, along with Skinny Mike. Pegboy is by far the BEST punk band to ever come out of Chicago, and to have the local legends working/drinking at the bar almost every night of the week is a special treat. You can pick their brains, talk shit with them...and they are always cool with you. I like that. One of the owners Herbie is always on hand as well. I love doing shots with this man. He is totally cool, and also plays in a great local punk band, Beer Nuts. Totally great guy who runs his bar very well. They have a stage in the back of the bar. The sound isn't the greatest because of the size of the first floor, but that is all part of the mystique of this place. Reminds me of all of the other shit holes Ive been to to see punk bands play at (i.e., Fireside Bowl). If you wanna get drunk, have a good time with friends and meet some cool people within the industry...get your ass to Liars Club! read more

I really like Liar's but I don't go often. Where else can you hear Kenny Rogers, Poison, Britney Spears, Motorhead, and Michael Jackson right in a row? It's such a clusterf**k of music on the weekends you can't help but enjoy it. The weekends can be pretty busy downstairs and the crowd can be of the annoying type but there is always upstairs for an escape where you will find a KISS wonderland, a pool table, and music of a more consistent rock/metal vibe. The staff is awesome and my favorite part of the place. You must witness the napkin toss on Friday nights! Fun! They also have shows occasionally but I don't recommend them. In my opinion, in a bar so narrow you need to actually have a stage so more than 5 people can see more than the top of the band's heads, but whatever. The highlight of Liar's however has to be watching Herb, the owner, air-guitar his way through the bar! read more

Come to Liar's Club and get your old school on......Been going here for years, and it's hard to explain. Think Swingers, the old Vince Vaughn movie that everyone is forced to love even if they didn't think it was all that great (the Caddy Shack of the 90s). Walking past it on the street or doing a quick drive-by, you wouldn't give a second thought to walking in this joint. No glitzy welcoming signs or windows to see the talent on display, but more like an old liquor store shut down due to failure to renew their liquor license. Your parents wouldn't be caught dead coming in here, it looks too scary to enter from the outside. They'd think OG Chicago gangsters are in their bootlegging and selling thick closed toed broads for profit so they'd be terrified. However, you aren't your folks. Enter here and the place is all too welcoming. Friendly staff. Friendly bouncers/doormen. Laid back bartenders who make an honest stiff drink. The best part? The music. The DJ brings it every weekend. Old school. Michael Jackson, Bell Biv Devoe, Old Dirty Bastard, Beastie Boys, Warren G., it's a high school party all over again, but now you're legal. Guys who are gun shy and want to avoid the dance floor, this isn't the place for you. If you go in there minding your own business, you will have a several ladies pull you on the floor to dance. Don't be lame and say no. There are always more women in here than guys, and they are all having the time of their lives. You can tell none of them are regulars, and somehow this place continues to rotate packs of visiting women in and out of here like rotisserie chickens. Liar's Club, keep it coming. So I was living in Logan Square and I had heard about this bar for ages and never went. One night my friend whom I haven't seen in at least a year is deejaying there so I show up, she spins punk and metal that night upstairs. I'm thinking its a Friday night. So I get there and sit around and some guy buys me a drink and then I go upstairs and the bartender is her roommate and he hooks me up with drinks. Then I'm chilling with this other girl and the guy and we all end up making out in the bathroom. Yeah so I got pretty wasted and danced etc. I almost got into a fight with some girl because I purposely put her ball in the pocket and you know what, f*ck her I would have beat her ass. The girl I was with fell on the pool table and nearly missed kicking my face (damn I got good reflexes) and then I went outside to get some air. Well the guy was still trying to hit on me and I was like I'm going home and I walked to the Fullerton bus stop and puked behind the bench stop. Okay so I get home and I just pass out. I wake up in the morning and I see this open wound, now I don't know how the hell it happened but it happened. Lesson learned, no more not eating before drinking, you get really wasted. I had to go to work the next day and they bandaged me up. I'm giving this bar 5 stars woot! read more

Every time I go to Liar's club, I have a good time. Take this past weekend for example. There was an appearance by none other than "Naked Guy". Yes, that's right. He gets butt naked on the dance floor and dances to "Hot in Hrrr" by Nelly. Naked Guy is only part of the fun. Overall, Liar's is a great place to meet friends for an early (9pm) drink to chit chat...then a few hours later, the party is on and it's packed. They play a nice variety of music, starting off with more retro and then getting more and more modern as the night goes on. It's a good time every time I go! read more

I don't really get what's so great about this place. I've been here for numerous events/DJs/specials, etc. Scared to Dance used to be OK until it seemed like everyone on the dance floor was 15. Maybe it was just me, but I didn't really have a good time dancing like I usually do. It's a pretty trendy environment, which, if that's your thing, then fine. The rocker people are alright, and the upstairs is the place to be. I'm not sure whether I prefer this place or the Exit, which is located almost exactly south of this place a mile on North Avenue. The Exit is very similar but more gothy/punk. It's pretty smoky in here. One thing that always annoys me is the location. It's not Bucktown, it's not Lincoln Park, what the hell is it? If I'm drinking in my neighborhood I wouldn't go out of the way to go there, and if I'm following friends to Lakeview or Lincoln Park, this place is out of the way too. Especially if you're taking transit. So if you're going here specifically or you live near it, it's an OK place to go. But otherwise, it's not really worth the trouble. I'm not a huge fan. read more

The bar may as well be compared to any other hole in the wall. It's the rude hipster crowd that makes this place a truly poor experience. To me, there's simply nothing fun about being stared at or rudely asked for a cigarette 12 times an hour. Speaking of cigarettes, this place doesn't seem to have any ventilation...so you may as well forget about that nice coat of yours ever smelling good again. The music is, well you know, whatever the rest of the world considers "lame" at the time. Because lame is cool, duh. So don't expect anything unpredictable with that. If you weigh 94 pounds and spent your rent money on an iPhone, you just might dig this place. For the rest of us, don't even think about walking in without a group of people...or you'll spend your time swallowing the lump in your throat. read more

Its kind of embarrassing and nerdy why i actually wanted to go to Liars Club. Pretty much i heard it was haunted so i wanted to check it out haha but i actually fell in love with it. Its like a little hidden gem that you can easily drive by 10 times and not even notice it. Its just a chill rock n roll dark dingy bar. Most of the time i feel like the crowd ranges from 20's to 40's but then throw in a couple cougars on the prowl then it gets interesting! I feel like every time i come here once 12 am hits everyone gets on the dance floor and dances to every 70's-90's awfully cheesy good music there is! Last time i was here it was for Halloween and i was happy to see that not one person didn't dress up. It was crowded but in a good way! I just have to say that I'm pretty sure this is going to be my new hangout! read more

I sat by the bar, whiskey sour in hand. Older bar patron: "Is that a whiskey sour?" D: "It is." Patron: "Cool." And indeed it was cool, because it was less than $5. Everything else was pretty cool as well, like the KISS pictures above the bar, pool table upstairs, photobooth (it prints out your foolery on a Polaroid), the wee dance floor on which to continue your foolery, and the fact that I didn't pay this $5 cover I've been reading about (it was a Saturday). Liar's Club is the go-to place on those rare occasions when we're able to get the entire "crew" together. Sure, the decor leaves a hell of a lot to be desired (excepting the super cool oversized Shriner hats that serve as light fixtures). The bathrooms are disgusting. The music is sometimes ear-piercingly loud. But that matters not to me, because this bar is FUN. Pure, unadulterated fun. When the DJ starts spinning "Like A Prayer," and the diverse, energetic crowd gets out on the dance floor, you can't help but be consumed by an overwhelming sense of joy. Everyone's having a great time, and there's no pretension. And in addition to the fun beats and cheap drinks, you get the benefit of an interesting cast of characters (namely, the "Naked Guy," who somehow gets away with dancing in the buff without seeming to offend anyone). The long and short is, I have never not had a great time at this bar. I have also never woken up the next day after a night at Liar's Club without a hellacious, raging hangover. read more

I'm not sure how I've never reviewed Liar's, as it was one of the first bars I ever went to regularly when I moved to Chicago (chalk it up to my years as a roller derby girl). These days I prefer to visit on weeknights, with friends, dancing like maniacs to whatever the fuck we want. Went here last night, and it was an experience. I think I still have stale smoke coming out of my pores. The decor, we were warned, is half-Shriner, half-Kiss memorabilia, and that really is spot-on. The music was eclectic and awesome. I love the pinball machines. The upstairs bathroom is scary as hell. Diverse crowd, too! I love when I can walk in somewhere and there's no pretension, there's people who are obviously from very different walks of life, and everyone pretty much gets along. It's one of those places where some people keep to themselves, but you also kind of have a feeling that should something go down, you wouldn't be the only one swingin on your side. Gosh, that's great. Add in the occasional celebrity factor and it's very nearly worth it to feel like you were molested repeatedly by a large ashtray with a fondness for facepaint and fez hats. read more

I hesitate to recommend my favourite bar as I don't need it further over-run with yups & weekend warriors, but I can't get out 4 nights a week as I did in my yute, so I'll recommend it to you and you can keep my seat warm. How was last night my first night to stumble across this well hidden gem? This was the after party to our birthday party earlier in the day. Even when it was jammed packed inside it was fairly easy to get a drink at the bar. Most of the people were rocking out on the dance for most of the night. I was also surprise on the 3 girls to 1 guy ratio, for most of the night (might of been a bachelorette party of some sort). Great mix of people from young, old, white, black,green, tall, short. The music was hit or miss. The DJ would play anything from Depeche Mode to MC Hammer, and yeah it had everyone moving. The staff at this place is super awesome. The cost on drinks were fairly reasonable. My dislikes are the smell of urine from the restrooms and the random naked guy on the dance floor. Beside that, I'm game for next time. What a way to end a perfect day. read more

Unwilling to stand in line in the cold at Vain, we took a detour around the corner to the Liar's Club. In general, a fine alternate plan. It's a no-nonsense little dive bar for cheap drinks and danceable tunes. Beers were cheap and $4 for a giant vodka tonic was great. What more can one ask for? The mostly mid-twenties and thirties crowd was fun, and into the music. Just based on the music, it's obvious this place caters to an older demographic. DJ started off with some fun songs dance songs. Then he went into the older, rock/punk set which carried on for way too long. A fun old school song interspersed with some current music is fun, but not endless sets of it. We left after a Justin Timberlake/Britney Spears back to back songs which satisfied our dance fix. This place looks like a gimp dungeon from the outside...more than just a little itimidating, but once inside it's a nice scene. As Dab said, think the Dresden meets Neo.... a absolute must for any favorite bar of mine, dark, stiff drinks and either good DJ or jukebox. The drinks are always stiff, the bar is always dark, the music I must say is hit or miss. The crowd is a diverse mix of Depaul, punk rockers and the original bucktown crowd from 10 years ago before they all became passive agressive hipsters that listen to Of Montreal. The owner is i believe a member of the KISS Army, thus an homage to them in the DJ booth and upstairs. The bartenders can be curt but all in all they are good at their job... you used to see the Naked Guy every Fridays....haven't seen him a while... perhaps in jail on that mopery charge? The only downside to the place is that once in a while they do hire out a group of 21 years old once or twice a month and they attempt to charge$5-10 at the door for some horrible DJ that plays industrial crap...lots of skinny jeans, ironic tshirts and mustaches... or the checkout guy from Whole Foods. read more

Man, this place rocks it! Punk as hell, even if you choose to check out the dance floor, which is just weird for a punk place but fitting in its own way. I don't know if they do this still, but before I moved away, they had this beer-tap that looked like a golden turd. It was for whatever keg they could get a deal on, and so was cheap but they wouldn't tell you what it was (euphemistically calling it peepeepoopookaka). That just adds to the "charm". UPDATE---I just want to say that I actually met the scary bartender tonight that I spoke of in my original review and her name is Mary and she is FABULOUS!!! She is so nice and sweet. I can't even believe I thought she was scary. However, Scary Mary does have a nice ring to it, right? She is ridiculously nice and it just adds to my love for this place. Liar's Club is my cheers. I love everything about it, from the cheap drinks to the naked guy that dances on weekends. The bartenders are good, the drinks are strong, the decor is eclectic and the music is (usually) good. On the weekends it gets very crowded with your usual Lincoln Park college kids, however the upstairs is open and they play rock 'n roll for those of you who don't want to dance to Madonna or whatever downstairs. This is definitely a dive bar and not a college sports bar type place, although all types of people are greeted politely and usually everyone gets along. I have moved away from Chicago but it will always be "my bar" when I'm back in town. read more

THERE ARE TWO REASONS YOU GO TO LIARS CLUB. 1) you are a regular, and appreciate the sense of community and nuances of the place. 2) you enjoy going out for a bit of drunken fun on a weekend without paying a five million dollar cover, and want a balance between dancing up a storm and talking to close/new friends. i go here for both. i am a regular on tuesdays, and the occasional wednesday. its a great balance of getting out when you cant wait for the weekend, and keeping it low to mid key. always great conversation, be it with fellow regulars or the friendly bartenders. the place is pretty packed on friday and saturday nights. the music gets a bit more mainstream/top 40, but overall i can get down to it. there are usually free giveaways, ranging from turntables, to gift certificates, to free cigars. you just get the feeling that these people (owner, employees, djs, drunkies) can appreciate a sense of community. everyone is accepted, and easily integrated into the "club". also, some interesting local rock/hip-hop acts surprise you a couple times throughout the month. come have a drink with me, ill be the one sipping on her third vodka and tonic, waiting till they kick me out at 2 in the morning. read more

I should really be giving the Liar's club one star- but I've never had to pay the cover. The music could be better if the sound system didnt blow. When they do decide to have a "dance" night the djs tend to be beyond terrible from trainwrecks to poor choices (seriously Rihanna isn't electro). The drinks are cheap which you'll need. read more

My four star rating is primarily a result of this club mixing classic 80s with Waka Flocka Flame - it takes a little bit of creative genius to make that work. But work it did. I came here Thursday night around 11 p.mish, and discovered a charming, if not random, dive bar in Lincoln Park. Apparently, the owner is a big KISS fan (which becomes obvious once your eyes adjust to the dark and you notice Gene Simmons' face, and tongue, staring back at you from the wall). The dance floor was enjoyed by a few stragglers Thursday evening, but I can imagine it becomes pretty packed on the weekends. This place draws an eclectic crowd - regardless of who you are, what you do, or how you dress, you can fit in here. A tough find in this city, but a welcome one, for sure. read more
